Been trying to add certain convoy routes to World at War, trying to replicate some of the routes present in World War I,
namely from Algiers to Marseilles for the French, Tripoli to Taranto for the Italians.

I have managed to establish a Finnish resource convoy route from Hanko to Königsberg for the Germans. This route was easy to set up because Finland is already an independent nation (with a capital), and inclined somewhat towards the Axis.

But I keep having trouble setting up the French and Italian convoy routes, because Algeria and Libya are “owned” as it were, by France and Italy, respectively.
I understand that even Minor countries require a “capital”, and must be “occupied” by its respective Major, in order for the convoy route to work correctly.

Ok so when I attempt to give Algeria and Libya (and other similar countries) a capital, a notification comes up saying that these countries already have a capital which must be removed first. But they do NOT have a capital in the editor nor on the map that I can see , so I cannot “eliminate” and give it one.

But then these countries cannot be “occupied” by its parent Major (because they do not have a capital) in order to set up the convoy routes.
Also, I cannot get these countries’ hexes to be considered “occupied” by its parent Major either, for lack of a capital.

What am I missing here? Thanks for any help.

Hi

The land in question currently belongs to, i.e. is part of France or Italy respectively, but to have its own capital and be a separate state the hexes need to be assigned to belong to that state, i.e. Algeria and Libya.

To do this, when you open up the Editor it defaults to having the Edit Hex Layer selected, as well as the drawing tool (the icon with what looks like a pencil along the top). Click on the rectangular shape next to that.

Now right click on some hexes in Algeria. An option comes up to select the hex owner/occupier.

Set the owner to be Algeria and you should now be able to add a capital.

The scripts will need to be Updated when saving, but while I would save regularly, you can hold fire on doing so until you've finished changing ownership for both countries and adding their capitals.

Thank you. Yes, it seems to work for Libya-Italy but not for Algeria-France, due to the Vichy France activation script in Surrender_1.txt.
The Update function does not automatically correct the asterisk error therein. I've tried a manual editing out the hex where Algiers is located (92,62), but this doesn't work either.

I've even eliminated the entire Vichy France script in Surrender_1.txt, but still the asterisk remains. Hmmm...? This may not be worth it because Vichy France is important.
This seems to require advanced scripting to be able to establish a convoy route from Algeria to France, and also retain the Vichy France events.

When you press Update with the relevant script selected, when it fails to update there should be a message giving some information as to why.

If you do this with each script type showing errors then take a look at the relevant line in the script file and hopefully it will become clearer what the issue is.

Thanks again. Well, I’ve managed to get the Algeria-France convoy to work: barring some further experience in this regard, it was a matter of deleting (in the Surrender_1.txt) all the relevant Vichy France territorial activations, except the French mainland Vichy activation. The convoy works, though it most probably means a breaking of French Government exile locations and liberated French territories, not to mention that it remains to be seen what will happen to the Vichy overseas territories when France surrenders…

I’ve also managed other convoy routes, that were easier to set up: Malaya-UK, Libya-Italy, Italian East Africa-Italy (inactive until the Suez Canal falls into Axis hands, I imagine), French Indo-China-France—then cancelled this route in favour of creating an occupied French Morocco, and establishing a Casablanca to Brest convoy—French Syria-France, and Finland-Germany.

The Vichy overseas territorial activation scripts need more careful attention.
I can only surmise there must be a way of establishing a convoy route from, say Algeria-France, etc., but without breaking the Vichy scripts.

I may send you the files, after all…

Yes, there is a way to do it, by having a Surrender_2 script to make Algeria withdraw from the war in response to Germany saying yes to the Vichy Decision.

I seem to have managed it. Thanks! From the Surrender_2.txt, I took the Madagascar Vichy Armistice acceptance as the base scripting and adapted it to Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Syria. There was a French Somaliland script already.

By the way, I’ve noticed that the correct Country ID for Madagascar is actually 11, but in the Country ID lists, all of the scripts in the Scripts folder assign it the wrong Country ID of 10.

The Localization.txt is the Master List where presumably all the countries have the correct IDs assigned, and which are properly registered by the game engine.

So Belgium (or Benelux) is actually Country ID 10, while Madagascar is actually Country ID 11.

Not at all. The first step is to create an "independent" Algeria and assign it a capital (Algiers), that is, by carefully selecting all the hexes that belong to Algeria (according to Strategic Command), and changing the hex ownership to Algeria (not France). Mind you, in the game, Algerian hexes are merged with hexes of Morocco, Tunisia, and French West Africa. I've done the same for Morocco and Tunisia, i.e., making them separate countries, so that I could set up convoys from Casablanca to Brest, and Tunisia to Marseilles.

To first select and then change the country ownership of the hexes, it's the green icon in the tool bar in the game editor.

Another step is to be sure that your new country, Algeria in this case, is either "occupied" by France or is fully mobilised towards the Allies. This can be done in the editor, by opening the scenario with the editor, then selecting Edit Country Data, and then Mobilization and Status.

The convoy script is edited thus for a route from, say, Oran to Marseilles:

Finally, before saving the scenario edits, you must have all the scripts updated. The editor will prompt you for this.

I should point out that once you get the hang of it, the process is not too difficult, though perhaps my explanations are a bit confusing. I was stumped because I was unaware that you had to create an "independent" country and assign it a capital before a convoy can be set up to a Major Ally.

Anyway, I hope this helps somewhat. Bill Runacre and Hubert Cater are very helpful and will explain things more clearly than me!
