T109 July 5, 1942 This view shows the main German front where the summer offensive has been triggered. One more turn of shock effect is yet to go. Note the Russian tank and artillery units have been withdrawn to avoid the initial German attacks. In another turn they will return to the front and resume attacks along with the new fronts in the south. By going south through the Pripyat marshes I saved time in repairing the rails to move west from Kiev. With the overextended feature it is not possible to keep moving forward if completely out of supply.

T112 July 15, 1942 This shows most of the entire front. Note the southern front is forming half way between Kiev in he east and the Rumanian border in the west. Supply is finally forming in the south to allow the offensive in the south. The Axis appears able to form a front that will need to be broken once the troops in the south reach them.

It has been two weeks since your last post. I hope all is well and it is a case of Willie going off on another one of his many holidays ;-)

One of the things I like about reading Mr. Harvey's and the other AARs is how DIFFERENT you all play the game than I do, I am probably going about it all wrong, but I have fun doing it :) and you experts would most likely wax me (as did Fortunata) but I usually avoid subdividing units voluntarily (unless it is one like with 150 tanks in it) and I usually let the Germans get much closer to Moscow in 41 ... right now David is about 100km from the Big Guy in the Kremlin (Sept 41) but he's rolling out some lovely artillery for his German guests :)

T113 July 19, 1942 This view from space shows most of the front. The Axis has formed a front now so it will be slow going at least until the Soviet winter offensive in late 42. Berlin should be taken in 1943.

Hi Tom, Can I suggest that you attack out of the area in the yellow circle. The more you can lengthen Willie's lines the hard for him to defend in depth. A 100km advance here and Willie will have to abandon the south. You just to make sure your northern flank is strong. If you then push hard you can arrive on each defensive line as he arrives.

Just my 2cents worth.

John

T113 July 19, 1942. Hi Fogger. Here is a close up view of the area you suggest for an offensive. That is one of the areas of potential in the south. I was advancing as fast as possible through the Minsk area to the Baltic by using all the rail repair units there to provide supply. In the South there was zero rail repair and finally zero supply. I had to actually retreat in the south to stop my units from dissolving due to overextension. For a time both the Germans and Soviets were retreating on the same front!

I did not want to repair the rails all the way from Kharkov so I was able to cut through the Pripyat Marshes and arrive West of Kiev. I am still trying to bring the units in the south forward as my rail repair units are moving EAST to reach them!

I was trying to stretch his front in the south to prevent a massive German line in front of Poland and Berlin.

The area you suggest is a good one. As you can see I have been pushing there already forcing him to defend. Once my units in the far south reach his line in front of Rumania, I can pick some spots to advance westward to once again force a large retreat for the axis.

FITE2 T113 July 19, 1942 The big offensive will have to wait a while. In the view shown in the far south the rail repair units are moving straight south to try and supply the units marching west. I had to hold the southern front units back and actually retreat them due to lack of supply and overextension. The southern units were dissolving just sitting. Now they have the bare minimum of supply but that will improve as they march west.

There are many units all over Russia moving west. Almost all the land lost in Barbarossa has been retaken but is not yet in supply.

T114 July 22, 1942 Here is the large view of the southern front. Supply will be resolved in the south on the next one or two turns. The Black sea is now becoming a combat zone again.

T114 July 22, 1942 This view shows Odessa is now in sight. I suspect the Axis has a line there already that is not yet in visible. Very little action on the entire front. It takes a long time to move troops and supply from Kharkov all the way to Odessa, after stopping the German offensive. The grand offensives will begin in 42.

T116 July 29, 1942 Here is a skirmish area near the Baltic where German armor is moving forward in an area of Russian weakness. I am sending in troops to counter the German attacks. Most of my efforts have been to connect all my units from the Baltic to the Black sea by rail. That is nearly completed. That forces the Axis to stretch their defensive line as well.

T117 August 2, 1942 This is the big view of the entire Southern Front. The Axis has pulled back once again.

As indicated in blue, Romania will change sides if that area is taken. If Kishinev is taken Romania will change sides.

T117 August 2, 1942 Here is a closer view of the Kishinev area. The northern front in Poland has not changed. However, as can be seen Kishinev is only a few hexes away for the Soviet armored recon units. There may be one more defense line there but I think in a few turns it will be crushed.

T118 August 5, 1942 The Baltic front shows the German defense in depth following some probing attacks. Maybe the bad weather will be needed to break the line.

T121 8/16/42 This shows the new offensive in the south by the Axis. I moved up forces to embrace the Italian, German and Romanian southern offensive. We shall see what the Axis does next. The Romanians refuse to surrender or change sides despite the loss of Kishinev. Maybe 1942 is considered premature and they fight on.

T123 8/23/42 This is the Romania front where the most action is located. The Axis are attacking with the Italians and some Germans further north. As can be seen the Soviets have a rail line completed close to the action. This will enable unlimited Soviet forces here to try and knock Romania out of the war.

Thinking about it, it's interesting to speculate what would have happened, politically, if the Soviets had been able to so rapidly and decisively overturn the Axis offensive. Looking at the screenshots, the Soviets have an enormous amount of fighting power already in place and by the end of 1942 I would expect them to overrun central and southeastern Europe.

Under these circumstances, it would become quite plain to the western Allies that within a couple of years, the Soviet Union would be in a position to dominate all of continental Europe. With the Casablanca Conference still well in the future, I think Britain in particular would be pushing for a negotiated settlement with Germany to prevent a complete Communist takeover of Europe.

T126 9/2/42 This view shows the aftermath of an Axis spoiling attack that forced me to pull back for better defense. The destruction of the Axis forces will have to wait until 1943. While great progress has been made in 1942, Berlin will have to wait until 1943.

As indicated, some 1941 fortified hexes are relevant again.
