ORIGINAL: MarkShot I understand ground combat (tactical, operational, and strategic). WWII games familiar with CMx2, MIUS/TWT/GTOS, HOI4, Panther Games(all), ... But I have never played any uber-grog TBS operational war game (except Panther {uber but not TBS}; was actually a team member). This means, I have never played any title by Gary. I have downloaded the manual, and plan to check out the resources page. I am retired and I do have time (or, at least, I like to believe so). So, should I consider this title? I know I am not learning it in one night, but I don't want to find that a year has gone by and I am still just reading and have yet to play a game. (Because I do take graduate classes as a retirement hobby ... so, I would be purchasing this as a game, as opposed to trying to find something more mind bending than Quantum Mechanics.) Thanks. PS: Some of you probably know me. Now, be nice. These forums are supposed to be family friendly! :) If you're retired I'm assuming 55+, probably 60+, I'm 54 and in the past I was an avid ASL player for the most part but I loved the large campaigns and playing games built around them, especially if the scale was small by comparison, I owned Wacht Am Rhein, Wellingtons Victory, The Campaign for North Africa, and GDW's Fire in the East, though I never played to completion North Africa or even started Fire in the East, time and space at the time I owned them was just too tight, now as digital wargaming is enjoying a moment in the sun (long may it continue) I'm finding more and more games that just hit the mark for me, if you even looked at these types of games and felt an itch you needed to scratch then go for it. I owned WitE and WitW for quite a bit of time before I dove into them, WitE is definitely the more enjoyable and accessible of the two, WitW can be a bit of a slog because of the map size and the restrictions in western Europe , where as WitE has lots of room to manoevre and is an overall, in my opinion, better experience for learning the game, I have purchased WitE 2 and I'm reading through the manual at the moment before I jump in though I suspect I will be losing some serious hours in the autumn playing it. Looking at the games you listed in your post they are not that similar but I still feel you might get a lot out of WitE or WitE2, maybe pick up WitE in a sale and see what you think, either way I can't think of a good reason to say no to your question given your circumstances. Also given the games you listed I would also take a look at Flashpoint Campaigns Red Storm, a digital game using the WEGO system that is for me the closest I've come to the old GDW Assault series of board games, or Armoured Brigade, though they are modern they are closer to your tastes than WitE, but I'd still say take the plunge on it.
