Nice raid....although I would have had the first raid hit manpower, since they have manpower greater than 8, in fact 33. But you can revisit it in a few days, your vehicle hits will probably grow a few more points.

There is diminishing returns on hitting manpower, after 2-3 good raids it is usually better to target specific targets rather than manpower unless you are farming VP as a destroyed by fire factory is worth a lot of points.

It always seems to me the last few raids are the most devastating, as the CAP is worn out and the DL the highest which means focused one province attacks generally get the best returns as long as you don't overkill it.

So, for arguments sake, let us assume Japan has 200 vehicle factories, you just destroyed 1/8th of their total vehicle production, in one night! Probably more.

I wouldn't worry about the Toka, they are an Allied VP farm if you are prepared for them. I would hit Manpower, Ha45, and Franks as a priority at Yoko...and watch what he does with the damaged vehicle factories. Maybe hit the other vehicle factory plant.

Also, you can have a few squadrons of bombers target manpower too, along with those other high priority targets. Any base over 8 manpower this is a solid tactic.

However, I think your first strategic strikes at night should be against the largest manpower industrial bases hopefully before they get hardened with AA, Forts, Balloons, NightFighters as the return is so high. But once Japan starts getting that opportunity is gone, then vehicle production should be very high on the list imho no matter your overall goal for strategic bombing: VP or Supply destruction, speed of ground victories, or Air War dominance (day or night or both).

Going to agree to disagree on this one - I think targeting vehicle production has such little potential that leaves it in the "so far down the list we won't even get to it" territory.

Granted, the IJ not being able to replace tanks is a bonus, but the IJA isn't tank heavy to begin with. No motorized support would be interesting, but by '44/'45 and the nature of ground combat at that point, I don't see it being a real factor to be honest.

quote:

ORIGINAL: Lowpe

Out of what is pictured from both bases:

1. Frank R
2. HA 45 engines, ftr engine
3. Sam takes the HA 43 engine, watch and see if Japan is repairing those factories, keep it below 30!
4. George ver 3
5. Jack ver 3
6. Shinden, never let it fully repair, a few points of damage is all you need.

You want to savage his top of the line fighters, which in turn will allow greater daytime dominance.

Japan is cranking out 2 Frank Rs and 1 3/4ths a Geroge verIII a day from Yokohama, and is using 1/2 of the Ha45 and all of the Ha43 engine production there too for them.

Don't worry about bombers, recon, 2nd line or worse fighters initially (Wait until you can run daytime raids and sweeps for those.)
but NFs would be high on the list, especially ones better than Irving and Nick...but even Irvings and Nicks trade ok with decent pilots in them. Force Japan to put daytime fighters on night duty which in turn makes your daytime ops easier.

See, I've a totally different approach if the goal is air dominance. It doesn't involve hitting the factories either.

Where you can really break the IJ air power is via airbase attacks. The real bottleneck for IJ airpower is in getting airframes in to squadrons. You can draw at most 12 planes in every week.

If you want to beat the IJ air force, you need to bomb their airbases hard at night.

You get a couple of blows in at them, both from the planes flying into B-29 defensive fire, and from bombing aircraft on the ground. It also tanks their morale, which is arguably the most time consuming stat to recover. The purpose isn't to close airbases, but to ruin the sleep of IJ pilots across the country. The squadrons morale tanks, they take losses, and they're limited to 12 planes replacement each week.

Once you're in a position to do daytime sweeps, the wheels can fall off the IJ air defence network very, very fast unless the IJ player has a well thought out position with rest bases and a large number of reserve squadrons, or is set up to take a maximum toll from other means (read - flak). IF not, they end up in a very deadly spiral of low morale, high fatigue, and losses mount through ops losses as well as action. If total losses end up at 12 or more, then frontline fighter strength will start to fall (and even if it doesn't, a full 42 plane squadron with garbage morale won't do much at alL!)

In short, if you want to beat the air force, need to break the squadrons morale. Fatigue applies too, but not as much.

We're not really bombing bases at night. It is a little up in the air, but seems to be over-powered, at least too much of the time. That's what led to my asking about night bombing Manpower versus individual strategic targets (factories, et al). Problem is many cities are not even set up with Manpower, and so would be totally immune to night bombing if I went that way. Also, as Manpower gets diminished (via hits/destruction) then Manpower attacks do less, so having lots of factories with a modest amount of Manpower would lead to the same situation. Just a bit of a hole in the game system, but not fatal. I'm still developing hte notion of how much night bombing of non-Manpower targets I will do.

Certainly the game disposition in 1943-44 will dictate to a large degree the route you take. There are plenty of ways to skin a cat!

If you envision large ground battles then bombing the vehicles makes sense to me (having suffered first hand from such a tactic previously), or if you are planning on a strategic VP game win then manpower and plane and engine factories makes sense to me.

I lost 60K VP to strategic bombing in one game which AV out on Jan 1, 1945. Japan destroyed almost all vehicle production and Frank R production in 1944...but if in this game the Allies didn't bomb to dust the Frank factories, I bet I could have lasted 3-6 months longer, and perhaps won the air war in 1944 instead of losing it in 1944 -- I came close.

Manpower doesn't really seem to get destoyed/damaged all that often, even though it gets hit lots.

What you can do if you want to make targeted night bombing less effective is raise the altitude of the bombers to 12K.

In addition, if Japan didn't prepare to counter night bombing then they are simply screwed, and most of those decisions needed to be made back in 1941. There are roughly 21 squadrons that can convert to NF, and Japan needs them all, plus 2nd and 3rd Generation NFs, plus runways, plus forts, AA, radar, great pilots, etc.

Japan can also resize some of the Naval NF squadrons larger, they come in at 18 and going to 36 is very doable.

Some night fighter upgrades are very convoluted and you need Dinah NF to get there...the original squadrons are from recon planes I seem to recall. Other upgrades can become null if you take intermediate fighter upgrades.

So, countering night bombing is very tricksy for Japan, but can be done.

I get the impression from what I see of Japan thru your AAR they are woefully unprepared for night bombing.

It would be nice to see a game that really worked the night bombing mechanic...about the best was Obvert/Jocke but there was a lot of screwy HRs in that game and Japan was totally unprepared for night bombing.

Conversely, I have won the night war and forced the Allies to daytime only. I ended up using my NFs during the day...

My feeling is that if night bombing is pursued by the Allies only in 1944+ then it is a huge Allied advantage, because Japan has not been conditioned or expecting it.

Consistent night bombing, even on a small scale in 1942 prepares Japan...hence they should have no reason not to be prepared for it in 1944 and 1945.

If the results are too good, the Allies need only raise their altitudes to mitigate it, but a Japanese player should be able to work out how to counter night bombing in 1942...it is doable.

PDU off handicaps Japanese night fighting ability.

Speaking of preparation, Walter said the first night bombing city I picked was the only place without night fighters on duty!

It's certainly a strong tactic, but it isn't overpowered. It just regularly catches IJ players unaware and unprepared.

How many IJ players will keep 300 engineers sitting around in strategic mode ready to rail to a wrecked airbase?

I'd agree here, but important to define what success looks like. It's not shooting down large numbers of 4E's, but the time gap between the big "all out" raids increasing from one every week to one every fortnight due to damage, fatigue, morale etc.

This is kind of what I mean when I say he is unprepared...you raided Yoko, 1 hex from Tokyo, and 2 hexes from very desirable bases to raid and was intercepted by one scant squadron (18).

At present your reach is restricted, it is Oct of 44, you should have crashed into 5-6 NF squadrons bleeding in from all over.

Your largest raid of the night was 30 planes....Japan needs to equal that at a minimum, better would be a 2-1 advantage which at this stage of the game probably means using some a day fighter squadron to augment the NF, plus bleeding CAP from within 2 hexes....

Of that big raid, only 5 were reported damaged...so 5 hits. That isn't slowing you down enough hence your perception that night bombing is over powered.

My thoughts....your tactics are more advanced than Japan's defense. After raiding places like Yoko or Nagoya or Kobe, you literally should have to rest your bombers 3-5 days to recover...that isn't happening.

Poorly stated on my part. I was referring only to the 'ordinary' night bombing of airfields and ports (bases) as potentially over-powered. I then made the extrapolation to non-Manpower City attacks and decided to ask the question here in the AAR.

Many of the B-29's flew but none found the target and many groups canceled. Bad weather I assume.

• The troops will rest for at least a day. Stacking is 260% so Disruption and Fatigue will remain elevated but right now only the armored units are less than 30%. Casualties present are very light, so we don't need to wait to recover squads, etc.

• We have 156,000 supply on shore, so no more will unload. All convoys are heading to either Ponape or Manus. The supply convoys will lose damaged ships and return to station in case the over-stacking penalty causes the troops ashore to need more supply.

• The bombardment group now at Ponape will be close enough to bombard in 2 days, but I'm skeptical the troops will be ready. Possibly.

I think it was same as yesterday because strategic points did not move at all. Maybe the last of the fires went out.

Kobe, for comparison. Some hits but nothing special. I think this had a lot to do with it:

What does Yoko look like today?

I think it was same as yesterday because strategic points did not move at all. Maybe the last of the fires went out.

I don't believe that is how strategic VP and Recon work.

I think pilot Experience has something to do with straying at night. Not sure if having a great leader helps or not.

Kobe and there is a squadron of Franks on night CAP.

Rough count there should be 15+ Nightfighter squadrons out and about by now.

Dinah, Nick, IrvingSA, Frances?, Zero, Judy. A couple squadrons of Frances would really slow you down, but any of them would too, the more the merrier.

142 vp + a full sentai of Japan's best fighters shot down. I guess he has the R version by now...still...Not shabby at all.

I'll pull pics of Yoko/Yoko, Nagoya, Kobe, and Gifu next turn. I think those are the only ones I've hit so far.
