Do Switzerland have ANYONE that can take a penalty?

EVERYONE it looks

When Italy wavered against Austria, some comments were on the line of "Austria almost sent a lot of pundits to the doghouse". I guess that there will be a very crowded doghouse tonight...

What a day of football.

Who knew Xhaka could play football?? Really pleased for the Swiss, but France were the architects of their own demise.... I mean didn’t they learn from Wales? Put two Spurs players in the team and you get what you deserve

Well... A cracking day of football...

The teams that have impressed me the most so far... Denmark, Austria, Czech Republic, and now, Switzerland. Fantastic tournament so far from all four. The Austrians have gone home of course but they can certainly keep their heads held high.

And... Netherlands, Portugal, Croatia, and France all going home.

Best wishes,
Steve

It is very surprising yes. But https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2020_qualifying_Group_H#Turkey_v_France they were lucky to be leader in that group. Still big teams should play better in main tournaments. I congratulate Swiss team.

One commonality between the deserving teams is their ability to play and believe until the last minute. It almost worked for Austria and for sure it worked for the Swiss tonight. France took their foot off the gas after their three goals streak and paid for it.

I hate penalties. They are a roulette (I hate even when Italy wins). However, this time the deserving team went through. I'm very happy for Switzerland, and France was considered "a given" one time too much.

I can understand that. Penalties shootouts are the worst way to end any contest after extra-time. The problem is, of course, a way is needed to split the teams and penalties remain the best of bad bunch of solutions. They are drama, they are heroes and villains, they are courage, bravery, fear, joy and despair.

I don't like penalty shootouts either but they are the best solution I have seen so far.

Best wishes,
Steve

I should disagree France wil be a hero after todays penalty shoot... Maybe Croatia in todays game if they didn't miss their chances in extra time.

Well... it's the last two games of the last sixteen...

England's Chicken Tikka Masala versus German Sauerbratan
Sweden's Köttbullar med gräddsås takes on Ukrain's Borscht

Get you chops around that lot.

Just a note: There are more recipes for Swedish meatballs than you can shake a stick at. That is pretty much true of all the National Dishes I have presented but Swedish meatballs perhaps more than most. I have gone for Meatballs with Cream Sauce as a representative of the class.

Second note. While Chicken Tikka Masala remains the National Dish of England, a case has been made for Vindaloo as Fat Les explains...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=va6nPu-1auE

Predilections, predictions and strange squiggly bits are all welcome...

Best wishes,
Steve

I ate Vindaloo in London, during a business trip, in a renowned Indian restaurant (don't remember the name). When I choose it, my English colleagues started to wave their hands and say "No! No!" It was the spiciest dish in the place (possibly in London). I went forward, and when the dish arrived the steam coming from it was basically tear gas. After the first gulp I felt my lips swelling and parts of my mouth peeling off. And yet I finished it and it was delicious.

Not saying anything about the first game. If I ignore it perhaps it won’t happen and we will still be in the competition tomorrow.

Sweden will beat Ukraine - Ukraine were rubbish in the group stages...... but then the Swiss were rubbish against Italy and looked ordinary against the Welsh......

Nah, still sticking with Sweden for the win

I did say I wouldn't comment but........... England fans moan (rightly) because invariably they have no star players that can unlock a defence. And in the old days of Hoddle or Le Tissier, we never played them when we actually did have them once in a blue moon....

We now have Mount, Foden and Grealish. Apparently none of these will start tonight. Right.

Can't wait for balls in behind the German defence, the incisive passes that carve up the German midfield etc etc..... Well I'll have to wait. Indeed I'll be waiting a long time with this team....

All that you have to do is to watch a good team play the German team.

England - Germany, half time.

What a bore Are they aware that the game doesn't last for 360 minutes? Or that you have to kick the ball into the goal (own or other's doesn't matter)?

Soon or later someone will kick the ball in the general direction of a goal and the ball will decide to go inside all by itself - out of frustration.

Most boring game up to now, at least among the ones I saw.

The problem with putting your tongue in your cheek is that someone might hit your jaw, causing you to bite your own tongue and possibly amputating part of it.

I congratulate England. Just minor but very important aspect of football matches is respect. UEFA uses this slogan but a bit empty.
This match should be in neutral nation stadium not in Wembley.

Don't get me wrong, I 100% hate the booing of the anthems - it's been happening since I can remember and sadly is only to be expected of brain dead neanderthals. Pathetic, mindless and ignorant.

As (nearly) always - certainly in 1990 and 1996, there wasn't much in it, and it all comes down to key moments.

I think we were probably better overall, but the Germans had some great chances. But Muller didn't take his, Pickford stopped Havertz and Werner, while Sterling and Sir Harold took theirs.

Gnabry was a disaster of a substitute for Germany - while Grealish, who came on at the same time, was involved in one goal and had an assist for the second.

Football. Small margins.

England 2-0 Germany

That was exciting, tense, nerve-wracking - being an England fan is not good for the nerves.

It feels so good simply because its Germany. Germany have been so damn good for so long and have broken our hearts so many times, it's nice to get a win - when it matters - at last.

But now the reality. It's the last 16. It's not the Q/F, the semis and certainly not the final.

So England, enjoy it tonight - and we will - but tomorrow please concentrate on nothing but the next game. That is all that matters.

A well deserved win for England - pity that the two teams played for 15 minutes.

After Sterling's goal all of sudden the real match started. I saw during the final stretch what I hoped to see from the beginning. Germany missed a clear equalizer with Muller and that was their only opportunity before Kasne closed the gate.

Nothing even close, in terms of spectacle, to what we saw in yesterday's two matches, however. I hope that, going forward, this will not become the norm...

'tis true. Comparing mindless football thugs (they are not fans) with Neanderthals is very unfair on the Neanderthal community.
