The air battle is bloody again, and the AA shoots down another Japanese CV bomber.

One American bomber gets through and damages the Zuikaku.

While the ship losses were even the air losses for Japan were pretty heavy, so now it's looking rather tilted against them. So they are happy ish to abort.

I guess the end result was basically indecisive, though Japan's ability to replenish its air forces is obviously less than the US's.

A number of German attacks as they attempt to force up to the banks of the Dnieper... also one near Pskov as they have an attack there too.

That antitank gun is very well placed... it's why the Germans can't get through, it feels!

Pretty important roll in that the Germans roll very well at Bryansk though, so the 'fortress' falls quite quickly in the event.

It doesn't unhinge anything serious but it's a difficult hex to take, and they took it and can keep on rolling.

Used a lot of air support to reduce the city though.

Some heavy strategic bombing that was more effective than usual, nothing got shot down despite the Uhu and a CR42 defending.

3 oil points went up in smoke at Venice as well.

The Chinese tried to bomb Shanghai at night but the Nick saw them off, again.

So after all that bombing, the entire Allied strategic bomber force rebases to Italy more or less.

Gort and 2 units debark onto Italy as well, and the Allies pull Wavell out of the front as well, which can be secure without him.

Here's the Eastern Front after adjustment. The Russians pull back partially to the Dnieper where they can, and also simultaneously start trying to turn the very northern end of the front.

Come on JAPAN! FIGHT! The spirit of Bushido and all that!

In my board game days CAs were not named, only CVs and BBs - and there were two names to every counter like Kaga-Akagi. IIRC the fastest most powerful Jap CV unit was the Shokaku-Zuikaku combination. Got a soft spot for the Japs, used to play them. Tora, Tora, Tora - Hirohito!

You've got an Anzio going on except in your game it's north and not south of Rome.

Japan is defintely the one I'm worst at, they havn't even taken the Philippines yet... and I did send Yamato on a raid while they were doing that! just not activated again yet.

And they got stripped of all air so they need to wait a bit now.

Yeah... so near. Yet so far. They just can't get into Rome.

Impulse #5, land actions from everybody, including some very risky attacks.

Italy rejiggles its units around yet again, trying to swap the Germans int he south witgh Italians so the Germans can cover the Alps if need be.

Germany basically moves MNTs north, and rejiggles on the Eastern Front some. There are a bunch more attacks around Tula, though now the Luftwaffe is 100% used up and most of their HQs are too, but there's plenty of fight left in the Soviets.

There's two more German attacks around the Tula/Kursk/Voronezh triangle. They win, but get the 'half disorganised' results sot they are slowing down. Also casualties are fairly light and fairly even I think, aside from the Shattered results which take a lot of Soviets off the board - temporarily.

But as you can see the next river line is pretty much ready. Tula will have to be the next fortress-city though.

At least I know how to rail factories now...

There is also an attack at Sevastapol, which kills a 2-2 MIL in exchange for an INF and a Romanian INF, so not ideal.

And an attack on Wuhan which gets a Japanese MIL killed.

A GARR debarks onto Chichijima Retto, which with Iwo Jima is going to be the inner line of defence covering the Marianas. Truk gets a Reisen as a reinforcement, some carrier air gets adjusted so the Akagi is empty.

Allies have a quiet-ish impulse #6... CW does a combined and various little things, Lancasters move to Italy and bomb some German factories ineffectually on the way, some navy moves to India to pick up paras next turn, some transports load stuff up.

Russia finishes getting into what they hope is their new and final line.

The US does a land action due to the sheer number of things to debark.

2 INF at Western Med to Sardinia.
2 ARM at Cape St Vincent to Gibraltar
Eisenhower is at Cape St Vincent too but he'll have to 'return to base'.

And then the invasion... question is where to land. Could be near Kwajalein, or somewhere else. In the end Kavieng looks surprisingly attractive, so what the hell. The US marines go there. An improvement on Tarawa.

And a P38G and a Black Widow go to the heel of Italy from Gibraltar.

Next turn Russia will be considerably strnoger, having got some good bombers coming - and they still have fighter parity I think.

The Italian airforce has swelled to the point they can attempt some land bombing... the Black Widow shows up despite being based on the other side of the planet it seems, but an 11 gets the bomber through, and its escort isnt even shot down...

The bombs miss though.

Axis impulse #7.

They all take land actions. Though Japan has storms in the Philippines, again. Bad weather really cripples advances against even meagre opposition... nice weather in the SU though.

Getting a bit tense again in northern China...

Feels like the eastern front is finally winding down too... the Germans lack the force to contest anything this impulse. In fact there's a general shortage of units, the line is quite ragged.

Allied impulse #8 is all land actions and all very minor, aside from the marines on New Britain, who seize Rabaul. There was a Reisen and two BBs on New Britain... none make it out. Lightning raid. The Japanese are not exactly happy.

Of all the mishandling going on in a game full of it (like not railing the factories out of the USSR), Japan's abysmal handling is surely the prize.

Really this is not what the plan was. They should have a reserve force, their many marines most likely, sitting back in some port on Mindanao ready to counter anywhere in the Empire the US or Commonwealth show up.

So that attack on Rabaul should not have happened. They should have the Imperial Guard ready to fight fires. It's pretty easy to stop an attack like that, at least where interior lines hold (and the Bismarck Sea was impossible to contest, at least until now maybe).

But the Imperial Guard are fighting in the Philippines still. And will be until the weather breaks. Which could be... whenever, based on past experience. When the weather breaks they got a couple of chances with their bad bombers to disorg, and then an attack which is probably 50/50 and if it fails, wait a turn. It could take a long time.

And why is that, in 1943? Well, i don't know to be be honest. Getting the historical territory seemed to be quite difficult. No surprise opener with a combined o-chit probably didn't help. But it took months to reduce Malaya due to constant bad weather. I'm not sure if it was just bad weather or wrong timing or what. Japan started early against the Commonwealth so if anything they should've been quicker, not slower.

Maybe I should just ignore the Philippines all along, but having US held ports right in the middle of the Empire seems a bit iffy. Guam is still US, I plan on having Japan pick it up at least, that should be easy.

Jul/Aug 43, Axis impulse #9.

Rain in most of the SU, worse in the Philippines, so not much to do. All the Axis take a land action.

Italy rearranged a bit, nothing too cool.

Antipartisan activities around Kalgan, a couple of MILs are destroyed, but one at least can be swiftly returned as its a warlord, a slightly below average roll, but thats partisans in the mountains for you.

And there's an attack at the southern end of the eastern front where there's still decent weather. A good roll could possibly push forward a bit - but its not a good roll,so the Germans seize up here too.

Impulse #11, its getting late and there are some must haves regarding supply lines, so CW/US take naval actions, SU takes land of course.

First off the Allies decide to bomb La Spezia. This turns out to be an incredibly bad idea as the italian AA from the BBs there blows a CVA right out of the air, and getting CVAs to the Med takes a turn. Actually longer, as I took it from CV Ranger so its an American CVA. Ranger can probably go to the Pacific, the CW is fine, and the US needs all the flat tops.

But Vittorio Veneto is damaged so its not all bad.

Main thing the CW/US do is move convoys and a TRN just in case (to the 2 box) to the Coral Sea, to open up supply. The Aussie/NZ navy does convoy duty, and there are some US battleships around in the higher boxes, and of course all the LBA around. It's quite raidable though being so near Truk.
