I really love these detailed graphics you make

Thanks, some of them are years old now as I was figuring out how to play as Japan.
I tinker with them now that I’m so far into the game.
It leads to some interesting tangents clicking through the inter web in between turns.

Australia beating Argentina 2-0 last night was a better distraction!

The George “fighter bomber” worked!
Naval attack at 100’, 20mm cannons and 2x 250kg bombs each.
The pilots are not trained in low naval bombing but one of them still got a hit.
It might have been PO1 Ikura as he got a LowN skill bump today.
They flew from Maloelap with range 2 setting. Their sister -2 unit were set to escort at 20k' in case they attacked the Wotje hex, but didn't coordinate.

There are some details on the enemy hidden away in this screen when you mouseover the recon units.
A quick look at the other Dinah units around the area spotted the following:
- 40th US Infantry Div moving towards the sound of the guns…
- 763rd Tank Regt is with HQ XIV Corps.
- HQ XXXIII Indian Corps is at Comilla. Something is finally moving East from Comilla towards the IJA 1st Army stack.
- 16th Chindit Bde is screening Comilla.
- 19th Indian Div is one hex further East of Comilla facing 1st Army.

What's the assessment of the Intelligence Staff of the US XIV Corps HQ being in India?
From some of the US Divisions also spotted in India, SOPAC might not have many Allied troops.
I am not sure there is much that Japan can do to take advantage of this information, as they are firmly on a strategic defensive posture now.

The focus of IJ defensive operations will remain:
1. the jungle rough terrain of the India-Burma border
2. CENPAC islands, with the remaining atolls of the Marshalls, Kusaie, Ponape and Wake Island now on the front line.
3. PNG-Bougainville may end up being bypassed by the Allies, so HQ SEAF and HQ 8th Area Army may need to consider shifting some defensive strength towards NW New Guinea.

Lots of combat power at Pearl…
No indication of ground forces, but with 375 ships in port that could include the USN CVs.
There are a lot more aircraft at PH than have been spotted before, so probably a sign of a build up of forces to come West.
Not good news for the Empire!

The counter battery fire from behind level 6 forts was effective today.

The Allied unit stats in red border are from a few days ago, so the 754th and 767th Tank Bns have just arrived.
More Allied units are on the way.

Now that they are behind level 6 forts, the Chittagong defenders are ordered to stay and fight to try and delay the Allies.

BB Hiei taken out of commission to begin refit at Truk – this was a mistake but luckily only 1 of the 4 Kongos was disbanded in port or it would have been more of them… not a good idea to have a BB locked into the pierside at Truk. The other 3x Kongos were hastily changed to “do not upgrade” so they don’t start the same upgrade.

SS RO-43 arrives at Cam Ranh Bay – to 4th Fleet
ML G-205 arrives at Sapporo – these are very shot range Motor Launch (Torpedo) boats. They have a top speed of only 17 knots, so I can’t see them being anything but cannon fodder. Once all the 20# boats arrive I might move them in short hops to defend key bases along the Okinawa-Formosa-Luzon-Philippine Islands line. The much faster MTBs (38 knots) are being returned to the pool and then bought back using supply to defend bases in the Marianas.

Franks on LRCAP over Chittagong contribute to a 101 to 25 score in the air today.
55x P47s shot down for 11 Franks.

CPT Dohibara was WIA today, with at least a 10 point experience penalty as a result.

Ouch, someone must not be training his aircrew too well.

My thoughts too, they might be new Allied pilots.
Still lots of 81+ experience IJAAF fighter pilots but the mechanics are struggling to keep the planes in the air!
Supply is also difficult to keep pushing to forward airfields now after the railway from Chittagong was cut. All as expected.

Fair to say that cracks are starting to appear but the wall of IJA Divisions along the India-Burma border should last a while yet.
It looks like the Allies will bring another Corps or two to Chittagong soon and keep bombarding from the sea.

Combined Fleet have been asked whether they could get some strike capability into the Bay of Bengal to intercept the RN, then back to the Pacific in time to deter the USN.

I really love these detailed graphics you make

I will second that - I revisited some recently to remind myself of historic IJ HQ allocations. Much easier to reference than Google!

The George “fighter bomber” worked!

The virtues of fighter aircraft on LowNav is fairly new to me too, glad to see someone else is having success (and with pilots that aren't best suited for it as well). Makes me feel justified in training LowNav as a core fighter pilot skill now!

Here's a look at the settings for 11th Sentai, the best Sentai in the IJAAF.
Pilots with fatigue <10 probably didn't fly yesterday.

There were 5x Frank Sentai with the same orders: 1st, 11th, 31st, 47th and 87th.
The risk of this setting is that none of the fighters are on local CAP, so the Allies could bomb the home airfield, but they haven't been doing that yet so it is a calculated risk.
Orders for these 5x Sentai will change to local CAP30% range 0 for today to give most of the pilots a "rest" and let the mechanics work on the other 70% of the aircraft. Franks with battle damage can take up to 2 weeks to get back in action, unless the magic railway mechanics are used.

I might be able to find a substitute 5 other Frank Sentai to provide LRCAP70% range 0 to share the workload, but after the losses today the Allies might go for a different target, like one of the fighter airfields.

You can sort your pilots by fatigue and then put the most fatigued pilots into Group Reserve to rest them.

Put a percentage of aircraft on rest if you want to make sure that some get repairs.

I’m happy to leave those decisions to the local commanders.
Setting 0 rest means up to the full unit might scramble, which I prefer on the front line air bases.
It doesn’t seem right to have some pilots lounging around at the bar while bombs fall on them!

Those repair times are estimates. I find having excess AS squads at a base will help get those planes back in the air more quickly.

The RN task force shown here bombarded Chittagong to little effect and was spotted moving West back towards Madras, then this contact with HMS Sussex that was damaged from 1x Betty torp yesterday.
A Betty strike from Rangoon “failed to find the target due to range or weather” but I-173 scores 1 hit from 4 torps launched.
Glug glug sounds heard, but it could have been any of the four Allied ships on this list.
Are 2x torps enough to sink a RN CA?

BC Renown is still on the sunk ships list due to 2x mines from 11 Jan 44, but there are still big question marks over that one.

11th RGC Ind. Brigade's TOE was upgraded to NCPC Infantry Brigade at Hengyang – most of these Chinese collaborationist garrison troops don’t need to take the extra replacements available from these TOE upgrades, but if some of them fill out they will allow more regular IJA Brigades to move forward to Burma. All of them will be allowed to take replacements just so that they are ready and trained up to 50ish experience for the potential mainland battles ahead.

Lots of TOE upgrades in China prompted a check of what units I had failed to set to Rest/Training.
The 29th Div Cavalry Regt can trade in their horses, a few HMG squads and AT guns for Type 95 Light Tanks.
It feels like a good thing to swap horses for tanks seeing as it is Jan 1944.

Two of the Naval District HQ Base Forces can also upgrade their TOE.
Lots of additional 12.7cm DP guns will come in handy once the B-29s start visiting these hexes.
The extra aviation support at Yokosuka will also be useful.

151 days until all the JAAF Base Forces and JAAF AF Bns can upgrade their TOEs, mostly taking more AA guns into each.
More AA guns that will cost supply to create and will burn more when they fire, but should keep chipping away at the Allied bomber force.

The Allied CIC has given me a heads up that he'll be travelling a bit in late Aug, so "plenty of time to plan the Soviet invasion"!

The IJA commitment to the Burma/India theatre means that the Allies committed multiple Armies to counter it.
With those large Allied Armies now advancing, most of those IJA troops will be needed to defend (or conduct delay operations) against them.

IGHQ will trust in the Japan-Soviet non-aggression pact holding, but will have to start making serious plans in early 1945 to defend against the Soviet Manchurian offensive.

Found this image on the interweb which sums up what I am expecting will happen in this virtual war too:

ADM Kato and the VADMs of the Combined Fleet congratulate CDR Kaseda on his appointment to command at Truk.
His mission is to get the ARD safely to Guam, effectively relocating the main support base for the 2x Submarine Squadrons allocated to 4th Fleet and the 1x Sub Sqn allocated to SEAF to Guam.
An AM Div under the command of LCDR Ikehama will escort the ARD as they move slowly north. What are the chances that they will make it?!

Here's a look at the plan for the IJA Generals.

GENs are needed for six Area Armies that start with LGENs in command; the 5th, 6th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 18th.
There are only 4x spare GENs on the reserve list, two of them semi-retired Prince Field Marshals and the Prime Minister, Tojo.
The two old Princes will take command of an Area Army each in Japan; the 5th and 13th.
GEN Kawabe is currently commanding 3rd Army (Corps) so he will be replaced and return to Japan to command Central Army, as he historically commanded 15th Area Army.
GEN Nishio retired in 1943 IRL, but in this game he will be ordered back to China as a subordinate 6th Area Army commander.
GEN Tojo will be replaced by a civilian Prime Minister and will be ordered South to command 14th Area Army. GEN Yamashita stays as a LGEN in this game.
LGEN Nakamura historically retained command of 18th Area Army when it was created from the 39th Army so it will be lowest priority for a GEN.

There is an excess of good Air HQ Generals on the reserve list that will be used to replace Air Army and Air Div commanders as those units arrive.

With the Allies concentrating on night bombing on the India-Burma border, 5th Sentai has just been bought out to 3rd Air Army and will fly south.
It will upgrade to Nick-D night fighters once it arrives at Bangkok.
There are only 21x Nick-D in the pool and it is now obvious to IGHQ that only making 1/day won’t cut it, as more than that will be shot down each night.

I’m going to adjust the pre-war plan and “invest” a bit more supply and HI points to expand the Nick-D factories from 30 to 60/month which will need another 60 engines/month to go in them. That will push the demand for Mitsubishi Ha-31 engines up to 360/month.

Depending on losses, 5th Sentai might still have to rotate in and out of the front line.
The Ki-102b Randy FB should start production in mid-late 1944 to add to the Nick-C for use as an auxiliary Night Fighter. It is currently 60% of the way to 9/44 at +2/day with engine bonus.
The Ki-102c Randy NF should start production in Q1 1945, by which time there will be a lot more Allied night bombing going on.
