Here is the situation at Riga where a Soviet partisan has disrupted my supply lines by capturing Riga and you can see how I'm starting to get some units into
the AO to deal with the partisan. I've turned on the supply bubbles so I can envision where the rail lines are finished and where they need some TLC. There
is another possible partisan to the west of Jurmala since the hexes have been converted to Soviet control. I need to get a unit or several units into that
area also.

I've run into the Soviet front lines near Pskov and I'm astonished by the level of preperation Ken has accomplished. This is a major impediment. Also, the
air war has heated up a lot and aircraft are in several furballs every turn. As you can see the railhead isn't very close and the supply levels aren't as high as
they might be but are still adequate for operations.

To the north of Kiev is the Gomel area and this is what it looks like right now. Ken is masterfully using the natural terrain for defense...in this
case the major river Soch. You don't see very many Axis engineers in this image because they are busy repairing broken bridges off map. And there are
several broken bridges that I need repaired before I'll be able to get across the river in this AO. It's things like this that is holding up my advance.

This is the Kiev area right now and shows the preperation Ken has accomplished there. Not showing is all the Soviet arty that's backing up the Soviet lines.
Fortunately, the Soviet defenders in this area aren't the best the Soviet army has so it might not be all that difficult to break through here, depending on the
number and quality of the Soviet arty. I might have to spend a couple of turns bombarding his arty via air to shut off the support they might lend to his defense.
If I can disentrench his arty ( move it from "T" or "D" to "mobile" ) my attacks will suffer fewer losses. So rather than trying to destroy his arty outright
I'm going to try to disentrench it.

This is the Odessa area right now and shows me approaching from two directions. This is a mostly Romanian operation although there are German units in the
mix. My problem here is the broken bridges. I need to get one or more pontoon units over here to help me leap the major river.

I think it was Moltke that said "March dispersed, concentrate to fight". You're matching him regiment for regiment along the line here, I guess looking for gaps that aren't there. I'd prefer to concentrate as much force as density penalties will allow at a couple of points to ensure that I can punch through, with plenty of reserves to follow up. He's not going to come out of those fortified positions so a screen along the rest of the front is sufficient.

Hey Golden dude: Thank you very much for that excellent idea. I'll try that. Ken tells me in an email this morning that as soon as I am ready we can
switch sides and do a restart. I'd love to play him as the Soviet player so I'll accept his idea and in a turn or two we'll do that. This is the best
opponent I've ever faced in a PBEM game. I'm having a great deal of fun even though it's a really hard game for me.

So um......hey you guys: Ken and I decided to restart and so Ken is now playing the Axis side and I'm the Soviet player. This is the house rules:

Here you go. Please remember that we are playing:

1. The Stalin effect. Soviet Units on the line Narva River, Lake Peipus, Pskov to Idritsa, Idritsa to Polotsk, Dvina River to Vitebsk, Vitebsk to Orsha, then the Dnepr River to the Black Sea exclusive may only move move 5 hexes per turn for turns 1, 2, 3, and 4. Soviet navy is the same. Soviet units outside of this zone have no restrictions. We agreed Limited movement includes for Soviet 7 Army (includes Corps 59 and 120), 14 Army (includes Corps 32 and 131), and 23 Army (includes Corps 19, 50 and 10 Mech). You can move no more 5 HEXES from your turn start, expending as many movement points as you want.

2. No Soviet dismounting of units is be allowed for the first 10 turns.

3. Play with partisans

4. No limit on bridge bombing

5. No limit on interdiction or sea interdiction

6. Artillery, Naval and air at supply level of 1 may not bombard. They may be set on interdict, combat support, sea interdict.

We're playing FITE2 version 1.9 which is a product of "Ken's Enterprises WorldWide, LLC" in which he alledgedly fixed the drop in Soviet production due to the loss of factories and the capture by the Axis of specific cities. So I thought I'd publish the Inventory and Losses Panel for the beginning of T1 to get a baseline figure for Soviet production. I've sorted this image on Rate with the biggest at the top. I'm going to monitor the rates to see if there's a drop of not.

I've found something that is disconcerting. According to the scenario the Soviet Pe-8 is a fighter bomber and according to real life it's actually
a heavy bomber. I'm wondering how to fix this. Maybe it has something to do with the equipment file?

Here's what the FITE2 v.1.9 equipment file has to say about the Pe-8 aircraft:
<ITEM_1423>
<NAME>Pe-8</NAME>
<COUNTRY>Soviet Union - 1940</COUNTRY>
<EQUIP1>256</EQUIP1>
<EQUIP2>194</EQUIP2>

<AP>23</AP>
<AA>1</AA>
<DF>8</DF>
<ARTY_RNG>1087</ARTY_RNG>
<EARLY_RNG>0</EARLY_RNG>
<SAM_RNG>0</SAM_RNG>
<NUKE>0</NUKE>
<VOL>999</VOL>
<WEIGHT>0</WEIGHT>
<SHELL_W>250</SHELL_W>
<ARMOR>1</ARMOR>
<FLAG0>4</FLAG0>
<FLAG1>32</FLAG1>

<FLAG4>16</FLAG4>
<FLAG5>0</FLAG5>
<FLAG6>0</FLAG6>

</ITEM_1423>

I didn't see a description of the aircraft that said "fighter-bomber" anywhere so I still have no idea how to fix this.

In the editor change the unit icon to the "heavy bomber" icon. Should correct the problem.

I just now received some moves from Ken and I watched a lot of the playback and now I've started doing my moves. This is the way the front lines look from the
Soviet perspective in T3. Ken is moving a lot faster than I expected. I feel like I'm falling behind already. But I'm having a lot of fun.

I've been trying to rail my troops to where they need to be ASAP and out of 8 that start the trip only
perhaps two will eventually arrive at the destination. The rest of them are knocked out of embarked
mode by Ken's INT missions. I've seen entire units evaporate. It's mostly deadly. And to add insult
to injury he's breaking my bridges all over the map. My RR engineers can't keep up. This is a hell of
a good game. I'm learning a lot and having all kinds of fun.

I've received some moves from Ken just now and I watched the playback ( 27K+ events ) and now I've come to the opening screens of my turn. The resolved battles panel says that there were 171 attacks by the Axis units and lots of them were successful bridge attacks. Ken has penetrated my light screen near
Riga and has gotten across the river and is advancing very quickly to Pskov. I'm wondering what his supply net looks like right now. I've been
breaking all the bridges I can while I retreat and I'm hoping that is a pain in the neck for Ken. A lot of my dead units are being respawned already. I have
sufficient rail cap. to get a lot of my units to the front but the problem is Ken's INT. Of 8 units that are railing toward the front only about 2 of them will
arrive at their destination. The rest of them are knocked out of embarked mode by Ken's INT. It's slowing down my delivery of reinforcements to a substantial
degree. Plus, he's moving a LOT faster than I expected. I doubt that I can get my front lines built before his units arrive.

Here's the Soviet view of the front lines early in T4. There's a lot of remnants of Soviet units pretty
far in the Axis rear. I'm proud of them. So far so good.

If at all possible don't move units embarked on trains through airfields. Even more so if the airfields have air units present. Airfields are observed. Same with urban hexes but there's no way to avoid those. It's not a 100% solution but it will cut down on interdiction.

There's some gamey things you could do to hurt his interdicting aircraft. You could attempt to concentrate fighters on air superiority in an area with several airfields and set their range so they cover a hex with an airfield. Then move units you don't care about back and forth through that airfield. It will attract enemy aircraft on interdiction which in turn will attract your aircraft on air superiority. Just try and stay out of range of his ME109s. They are fairly short range. Or if you feel froggy let them come too. Thing is to concentrate your Soviet fighters in a small area. You get lots more than him and will certainly win the war of attrition eventually.

Not much else you can do early on.

Thanks Jack. That makes sense to me. It's only T4 and my aircraft proficiency is about 12% so I'd rather
let them rest a little bit before I send them into harm's way. Besides the air schock difference still
favors the Axis and will for a few turns yet. I'll have to try your idea though, it's a good one. I
appreciate you feeding me these tips....I need all the help I can get against Ken. He's a master of TOAW
gameplay compared to me. I'm learning a lot and having a boat-load of fun. This is the hardest game I've
ever played I do believe. I hope to convey to you guys how much fun I'm having.

I'm due to get a boat-load of reinforcements in T8 and included is the 38th Corps. They are
all red and need to rest before they will be any good though. There's four pages of reinforcements
coming in T8 and they are all red. They will all have to rest before I can use them in
combat. Ken is coming on pretty fast and I may not get all the reinforcements I'm due because he
may overrun the hex and convert it to his control negating my getting any reinforcements from that
hex.

EDIT: In the following post below I seem to have started posting images from my D21 game for some reason. I appologize and my next FITE2 post is in post #120.

I finally captured Bryansk in T18 which is 20Aug41 but the weather is still
good and the supply levels are adequate and all my aircraft are green except for about half a
dozen Stuka's that are resting from having struck the Soviet naval units near Leningrad
and they got chewed up pretty good. Out of 250 Ju-87's about 77 were damaged or shot
down. And the Soviet boats didn't get a scratch. It's frustrating. And I don't have any
naval units in Leningrad bay to contest the Soviet naval units. So it has to be air attacks to
make them go away. The air war is heating up as you can discern from the air losses panel.

I'm having the same problem in my game, albeit the PO has the +2 bonus (not sure if you're playing with that or not- I imagine your house rule is enough) which makes it even worse. I did manage to do some heavy damage to Marat, but not before it wiped out the Finnish protected cruisers.

Yeah, Elmer got my Finnish cruisers too. D'oh. I'm racking my brain for a way to sink those
Soviet bad boys. I'm coming up with nothing. Maybe instead of using a two-dot attack I can
use several single-dot attacks. I'll let you know how that works out.

It's T22 and this is what it looks like down south on the way to the port at
Sevastopol. I plan to rail all my RR arty into this AO to help pound Sevastopol.
It's early September and I have to own the port by 04Dec41 to release the
Bulgarians. They are in garrison mode right now and therefore unusable for any practical
purpose. So far I've never owned the city in time to release the Bulgarians. I'm hoping that
my luck will change with this game. Supply is 12 at the tip of the spear. The
railhead is nearby so the supply level will rise in future turns.

I think you mixed your threads up Larry- not that I'm complaining, but wasn't this thread FitE until a couple of days ago? Now it's D21.

Anyway, I wish I had as much playing time as you. I'm on turn 13 or something and I started months ago.

I think you mixed your threads up Larry- not that I'm complaining, but wasn't this thread FitE until a couple of days ago? Now it's D21.

Anyway, I wish I had as much playing time as you. I'm on turn 13 or something and I started months ago.

Oops. You're correct. D'oh. I'll have to pay more attention. And yes, I spend maybe 16 hours a day playing games. I'm having a blast.
