Don't know what happened to KB's strike. The aircraft numbers attacking are far below the 300+ that should have been sent. Perhaps he split off some carriers already?

That's not an unusual strike size at all. Had I POW at sea and would she have been spotted the strike might have been a tad bigger but 90 incoming aircraft against what I had at sea there is just what I usually see. My last AAR is full of my complains of having 600 bombers on super KB having spotted hundreds of ships in range and perfect weather and all I get on average is about 1/3 of the bombers actually attacking.

When you set your bombers to strike a base, all fly. When you attack enemy carriers usually all bombers fly.

I doubt Mundy has split off one or more carriers from KB.

The KB did not send a full deck operation because the KB attack was a naval strike mission against rather meager naval units. Did Mundy have good recon on Soerebaja? I am amazed he would send the KB in like this...

He had full DL on the base and most likely full DL on all the task forces I had in the hex as there were like two dozen sighting messages of KB's bombers and float planes.

I think he thought the same as many Japanese and Allied players, KB being Godzilla being able to roam around. That might be true in open Seas but that's exactly what I was mentioning before, going up against a major base later than Dec 10 is not easy for KB and I was not afraid of keeping Force Z at Soerabaja, even if he had tried a port strike. Of course forgetting about my P-40E was major FUBAR.

I read the AAR with a sense of dread

You have to take risks with the Japanese in '41/early 42, but there are risks, and there is flying a KB strike at the biggest Dutch base without sweeping it first

My take on it is that KB needs to be used sweeping as much shipping and warships from the sea (and ports) as possible during the first year of the war. After that, striking at land bases and troops could be done with LBA assistance to sweep and suppress airfields. Putting those pilots with tremendous anti-ship skills on a mission to bomb an airfield in 1942 is just a misuse of their value.

+1

Why doesn't Mundy start an AAR - he could really benefit

His next airfield is Balikpapan, level 4 and at 11 hexes range. Guess he has around 100 land based Zeroes available all over the map at this point so if he decides to use his Zeroes at that range to sweep Soerabaja I will warmly welcome him. That works on Dec 7-10 when the Zeroes come from Takao and meet Warhawks over Clark with pilots in the very low 50 air skill but even though we are only three weeks into the war the same Zeroes don't want to meet my Warhawks now with pilots mostly in the 60s. There's no loopsided kill ratio for them anymore.

Agree with KB being used to kill shipping all over the map but I disagree with attacking ports. No opponent of mine would find a port with lots of shipping that could be bombed without completely draining KB, not even this "early". Sure, I'm not defending the whole SRA but I do defend Soerabaja at the moment so as the Japanese, I would not try to take out shipping there. When he lands in the North or the like I will have one or two shots and my fighters will be mostly exhausted, same with the bombers. Then Force Z has to leave at the latest and Java will fall.

I don't just see KB being a ship vacuum cleaner in 42, I see it being this the whole war but only in open seas.

enemy tank rgt clears Kluong which actually is good news as the fragments of 8th Indian bde is destroyed which enables me to recombine 11th (9th?) Indian div at Singapore as I have flown out everything except some motorized suport and some artillery... I know many people say it doesn't matter if you fight with bgds or divs but I see it different, I always want to use the biggest possible unit in combat so I don't use rgts or bgds in battle if I can recombine them into divisions...

Allied Ships
SS O19

if the freighter would have been escorted it would have been most likely a miss but O19 fired pretty much all torps she carried at Minami Maru... these surfaced attacks have always been kind of crazy, something doesn't work here when a sub fires one spread after another at a single freighter...

enemy av goes up by 300 so a deliberate attack would have most likely failed in this jungle rough hex... so we will just wait for the enemy to bring all his troops into position and attack... by then we will most likely have 2100 av, fully supplied behind lvl 3 forts but our main advantage will be the terrain... this is going to be a really tough nut to crack if Mundy decides to take out Luzon and it will buy us a lot of time...

his best decision would have been to just bypass Luzon of make Clark a POW camp as my whole play is focussed around Guderian's doctrine of building "Schwerpunkte"... Nicht klotzen sondern kleckern! For all the German speakers

yeah, didn't make any sense but it will only cost him some 2k supply I guess

Bombarding just for the sake of it?

Telling you that the heaviest units he's got are retiring from the area?

This won't last the year

He didn't have to tell me, his BBs were spotted every day and they were also spotted moving out, with or without bombardment.

Well, I can't do a moving defense in the game. So Model might be better suited here. What I tried to say is that in the game, if you try to defend this and that you have no chance to defend anything. Luzon is usually overrun easily but just put all your Philipine units into Clark and there is no overrunning anymore but a long grind. So either you have to grind down the defendrs (which takes a lot of time) or just bypass.

On the offense, I would just bypass. But most Japanese players see Manila and Clark as important as it was in real life, but in the game, they aren't.

even less happening today even though Japanese troop numbers are slowly increasing at Clark... I think it would need just around 800 av and you can create at POW camp here, bomb the enemy for the next couple of months and wait until they run out of supplies... been there done that several times...

the Empire, mmmhhh, Republic strikes back... Mundy kept quite some surface assets on station on Luzon which were spotted daily, but yesterday they were gone and recon showed them at anchor at the tiny port of Lingayen... most likely the enemy wanted to save fuel and disbanded the ships as we have nothing else left than a dozen PTs that are on station at Bataan... that was the go for the USAAF's heavy bombers to return to Clark Field and fly a strike against the enemy's fleet... as we had evacuated all of the airforce except some recons and float planes from Luzon the enemy must have felt quite safe and didn't even have CAP over the port as all the fighters at the airfield are on offensive duty so our heavy bombers came in in perfect weather and picked their targets... one 500lb bomb after another detonated on the armored decks of the enemy ships and it was quite nice to watch, well knowing that we only did minor damage as these ships weren't damaged before so the fires won't do all that much... only the two DDs suffered damage from bombs penetrating their decks...

nice to see three Kongos here and not moving around with KB, I ussually keep the Kongos with my carriers...

we've flown in all 60 available heavy bombers (in the whole Pacific) to do maximum damage and another wave keeps pounding the enemy fleet with their 500lb bombs... if the player could just decide the loadout of bombers, dropping 1000lb bombs here would make such a difference as those are a threat to the cruisers and also got so much more effect on the BBs even if they don't penetrate...

not over yet and despite low number of bombers they score quite a lot of bomb hits which wouldn't be possible real life they way the bombers dropped their load in formation, guess 6-10 bomb hits would have been the absolute maximum...

last wave of Beasts shows up and now also Yamashiro is heavily burning... I doubt any of those ships is in danger of being sunk and the heavy cruisers most likely haven't suffered any real damage but the heavily burning Kongos are most likely out of the fight for a couple of weeks...

the B-17 on the enemy fleet was a morale booster today but the real important battle was fought on Malaya when the IJA shock attack across the river right into Singpore's defenders... like on Luzon Mundy hasn't recombined his units yet and takes massive damage in the river crossing, one unit being outright destroyed... the defenders suffered mostly disablements and the attacker must be horribly disrupted... like on Luzon we were thinking about a counterattack and even though I would never suggest an attack to anybody I thought it would be worth a try and all units were ordered to deliberate attack tomorrow... spent nearly 200 pp to switch leaders within the important units at Singapore, can only hope that is going to pay off...

lol, what? Nates on a sweep over Singapore? Amazed to see the enemy trying to use Nates... if they keep coming I will move some Buffalos back to Singapore as they can easily deal with Nates...

all operational B-17 were flown out of Clark again as I expected the enemy to send in lots of bombers to kill them on the field and they are just way too precious to be lost that way... no bomber was lost in the attacks against the enemy fleet and no bomber was destroyed on the ground today... repairing non operational heavy bombers is a pain, it's going to take 11 days to see the last non operational bomber being fixed...

that's why I would never suggest to counterattack early on or with the Chinese if you don't have an insane superiority already... despite crossing the river yesterday and suffering from a 1:7 shock attack the enemy still gets enough adjusted av (which looks horrible to be honest) to resist our attack and severly damage our attacking units... it wasn't as much the adjusted av of the enemy but ours, when our troops don't even get 50% of their base av in this attack despite being prepped for Singapore since day one... perhaps a shock attack could have achieved the needed 700 adjusted av it could have also totally wrecked our units though and I was reluctant to order a deliberate attack so a shock attack was totally out of scope...

I just should have know better and do nothing but recover the disabled squads from the enemy attack yesterday... that way we have suffered more (and the enemy less) than what would have happened in the first IJ deliberate attack so we did Mundy a favour here with our wrong decision...

I really don't think that it was wrong, because of the lower experience and morale of your units you may have had some bad die rolls. It could easily have done a lot more damage to the Japanese Army units. So it was worth the chance to try and hurt the Japanese even more.

yeah it was worth a try and there was a chance but I wonder how the odds were, perhaps 1:3 or 1:4 to make it work. Of course if you force the enemy to retreat it really trashes his units and that would have been a disaster. But if you fight four wars and it doesn't work in three then I would probably not advise to attack

Nitiren Maru was involved in collisions on both encounters with PC Formalhaut. The PC commander should get a medal.
