SUCCESS!!! It really doesn't happen often that an operation turns out exactly as planned or better say hopes became true... during the combat replay I've only heard the sound for a mine hit and first I even forgot to check the combat report and only did that right before ending the turn just to realize it was Kaga hitting one of Argonaut's mines...

KB must have either left Balikpapan due to this or has been disbanded in port as nav search hasn't picked them up...

the enemy starts reducing our defense now and while taking twice our losses I fear it won't take all that long to wear us down... the enemy isn't flying constant air attacks against Singapore so we will be easily able to increase forts to three again...

the enemy tries an attack at Clark Field against a pretty much equal force and gets a bloody nose... while we didn't suffer any notable destroyed squads the defenders managed to destroy enemy troops worth a Japanese rgt... a pity we lost a fort level though... Mundy will need seriously more troops to take Clark if he wants to take it within the next three months...

our only two available recon aircraft within the SRA were sent to identify shipping at Balikpapan where CV Kaga has hit one of Argonaut's mines and recon reports show no less than 76 enemy ships at anchor at the level 4 port of Balikpapan... some vessels there were reported as CVs which could also be big xAKs or TKs but usually you only get CV reports if there is at least one in port so all available B-17 bombers of the USAAF have been flown from Darwin to the level 4 airfield (still working on the airfield to get it to level 5 but the Dutch have literally no engineers) to strike the anchorage at Balikpapan with over 60 heavy bombers which is an all out effort for the USAAF...

perhaps we can get Kaga while doing emergency repairs after the mine hit...

here's the before mentioned USAAF heavy bomber strike against Balikpapan which started pretty much as expected with quite a number of Zeroes on CAP (recon showed 70 fighters at the base) but with only a 12 minute pre warning time the CAP couldn't do much other than disrupt the equal number of heavy bombers incoming in moderate rain...

then the really unexpected happened as I was watching 500lb bombs slamming into CV Hiryu and other carriers right at the start of the bombing run... WOW! That's the start of a devastating strike I've thought and devastating it was... after Kaga has hit that mine I thought she might still be at Balikpapan but Mundy didn't move out KB but disbanded it at Balikpapan most likely feeling save with that Zero umbrella over the port or not thinking about the possibility of all those heavy bombers being in the area to fly a port strike...

we're talking about 500lb bombs and not the 1000lb ship killers usually dropped by dive bombers and many of our bombs failed to penetrate the belt and even deck armor of some of the carriers (were Japanese carriers really able to shrug off 500lb bombs?) but those that penetrated did major damage... especially Kaga was hit hard also sufferring two ammo storage explosions while Shokaku and Zuikaku suffered no damage from the bomb hits...

Soryu and Hiryu were both also hit hard especially with the ammo storage explosion on Soryu... would Soerabaja have been a level 5 airfield those bombers would have dropped double the load and KB could well be history... as it stands now I expect Kaga to be sunk (if not today in the following days) with Hiryu and Soryu being in trouble as Balikpapan's port is nowhere big enough to really help in bigger repairs... the area has also been flooded with subs (all have working torpedoes) earlier already as we knew KB was in the area so the Japanese are in real trouble now...

with the damage done the Japanese have pretty much lost their naval superiority in the SRA, the USN has four carriers with a total capacity of 360 carrier based aircraft at Darwin ready to strike against targets of opportunity if the enemy decides to strike deeper South... it's end of January and the situation has just completely changed... I'm not intending to go up against the remaining IJN carriers if not absolutely needed but it's now going to be extremely hard to secure all of the SRA for the Japanese... High Command was already thinking about War Plan Orange or a heavy reinforcing of Java or Singapore but the Japanese still have three times more ground units that are way more experienced that can be sent in to fight a ground war on the big islands but naval invasions on the Celebes, Java, Northern Australia or Port Moresby seem to be out of scope now...

there were sounds of ship sinkings at the end of the turn and each turn's obligatory look at the aircraft losses leaves me a bit puzzled... the enemy lost an insane amount of KB's aircraft but they aren't showing up as lost on the ground coming from a sunk carrier as usually... can someone enlighten me how these op losses result? Going with these numbers it would be Kaga, Hiryu and Soryu lost... and I seriously doubt these are sunk...

for the loss of not even halve a dozen B-17 today we have achieved a mini Midway and this has also completely changed our overall strategy and the absolute line of defense has been reset way into the historic Japanese perimeters...

You caught his battleships in port with inadequate air cover, and he does exactly the same thing with his carriers later on?

I'm currently playing an opponent who is better than me, and you do make mistakes because you over think things, but this is something else

Well done for taking advantage of his errors but I think you need to find an opponent closer to your skill level

yeah, whem they fly operations but these aircraft didn't fly.

I know what you mean and I'd say the same thing I guess. But more so about the BBs on Luzon (next to Clark) than this time. I think it was a result of "damn, Kaga hits a mine, disband KB and clear the mines". If I'd tell you that I lost halve a dozen carriers (previously undamaged) in a PBEM to a single B-29 strike then it seems I perfectly match my opponent.

Putting KB's fighters at the base to fly CAP would have been the way to go but I highly doubt he has the 200 needed aviation support at Balikpapan that early on. Heck, I didn't even have so much aviation support in non major bases in 45 as the Japanese in our last campaign as aviation support is just so scarce for the IJ.

What Mundy has to "learn" is not to serve me opportunities though because usually I'm quite good in taking invitations.

I just thought of a possibility, maybe the CVs were scuttled with the air groups on board. I have noticed that the computer will sometimes scuttle BBs damaged from the initial Pearl harbor raid.

nothing of importance happening during the combat replay but we still have something to cheer as air losses clearly indicate that an enemy carrier succumbed today... I'd say Kaga is a reef now...

I lost the report for the 27th but there was some action... a sub sunk one of the fleeing ships from Balikpapan... DD Urakaze was showing up heavily damaged and Truant finished the destroyer so that's another victim to the B-17 strike...

more important are today's air losses though as there are Zeroes lost on the ground again which means a second carrier succumbed... guess either Hiryu or Soryu (most likely due to suffering an ammo explosion in the B-17 strike)...

I was wondering why KB was staying around Borneo so long and now it's getting clear... the mine hit on Kaga and the following B-17 strike caught KB in preparation for the invasion of Java... Mundy is super bold here as he presses his invasion without air cover now... that's like a Mersing gambit on 8th December with the difference that my biplane torpedo bombers have 7 weeks of training now and could be a real threat to enemy shipping without air cover...

just realized the enemy landed yesterday already and orders a first deliberate attack at Malang today... not to land right into my minefields and a possible intervention by Force Z (which is at Darwin actually) the enemy landed next to Soerabaja which is very unlucky... Mundy could have landed literally everywhere but not in this hex as Malang is my fall back position on Java (mountain hex) and I have already moved the majority of Dutch combat troops into the hex which means the IJA has absolutely no chance to achieve something here... talk about a really bad target for the attacker as this means there two IJA divs plus support units now trapped... Mundy has to either heavily reinforce or evacuate, both would be suizide if I commit my carriers here... hard enough with just my LBA as the enemy has hardly a chance to close down the surrounding airfields out of Borneo as Balikpapan is just too far away too effectively use the airfield against Java...

bold move but way too early and without a clear picture of Dutch troop dispositions it's a Gallipoli for the IJA now... I'm usually "defending" Java in the mountains either North next to Batavia or South next to Soerabaja... this campaign I opted for the South and Mundy takes just about the worst base to land... he had full DL on Soerabaja but he didn't recon Malang though...

all he can do for the moment is run with the IJN as fast as possible and hope to have landed enough supplies for his troops to last for the next two months...

It must have been a carrier, the Vals and Kates were all lost to ops in the turn with the B-17 strike. And Kaga was the carrier that was hit the hardest with the mine hit, halve a dozen 500lb bombs that penetrated the deck and two ammo storage explosions. Doubt any IJN carrier can survive this.

Such unusual circumstances - maybe the disbandment of the CVs made the losses become Ops losses instead of Ground Losses?

I have no idea to be honest and in all the years playing have never seen it before. The carriers were disbanded so the airgroups could not fly any strike missions, the fighters wouldn't even fly CAP. The only thing you can do with the airgroups would be training when the CVs are disbanded. And even then, they would always show up as lost on the ground so no idea what happened here. And at that day I was sure no carrier was sunk already, let alone all three.

The first one I'm sure to be sunk was the one that was going down with still 15 Zeroes aboard. A day later one with 9 Zeroes aboard went down. Which ones not sure but going by the inflicted damage it's most likely Kaga followed by Soryu.

Wow, I think we all knew this was going to end this way but this is even more incredible than I thought. So many bad decisions! Good job on capitalizing on them to the max but also I have to wonder if it's not getting just way too easy? Of course it is entirely up to you guys but I don't think you will be able to improve your game by playing against someone who is so far below your skill level and I can't imagine Mundy is enjoying this game much either.

My guess for those ops losses is that he transferred them ashore, so they were all damaged.
Transferred the pilots to reserve then withdrew the air units so your B17s couldn�t destroy the aircraft on the ground.
Damaged planes then would have been destroyed when the units withdrew.
It�s a guess, but you might not see those units again for what is it, 60 days for a withdrawn unit to reappear at Tokyo?
The pilots might have been saved to reappear earlier in other units though.

Was thinking the same for some time but then Zeroes showed up as destroyed on the ground when surely two of the CVs went down. If he transferred them to the base he would have all aircraft transferred so how could some Zeroes be left behind? No Vals or Kates were left behind though.

Seeing what I have done with the Japanese in our last campaign I was thinking Mundy can maximize his efforts while not following the exact same strategy I had as that would play into my cards. He knows what the Allied have and he had to go through what I did with what the Japanese have on hand but there are little nuances in the game that just don't have something to do with the knowledge of what side is capable of but more like being prepared for something or being aware of.

He should know I'm able to field 50-60 heavy bombers across the map. Spread over the map they are literally useless, but they are still 50-60. Put into one place they suddenly are a threat so being in range of a level 5 airfield is dangerous and then Soerabaja was only a level 4 but still usable. Would he have thought about that strike? No, he surely didn't. Like mentioned above, I've lost halve a dozen IJN carriers to a single B-29 strike in another game. Did I think about that strike to happen? No. Same result.

Nuances! In our last campaign I had super KB next to his carriers and didn't attack them because I have deliberately stood down all bombers. One click, nuances.
