Excellent scenario. Lot of sea space to work with, decisions matter and brutal if you're wrong. Hamburg, Jan Van Whatever, Byrd, and Wielingen survived! Gave up on Norway land stuff quickly. Happy I sunk no whales as well! Scored an average which seems right.

Anybody muck with the more powerful Soviet force much?

I gave it one good go with Orion's shooting from two directions but got nada. Good ship combo there in terms of defense!

Yes, you can sink that group with a concentrated attack, if you want to dedicate the majority of your P-3s to it, but it's going to take the bulk of your missiles to do it. The best SAM in that group has a roughly 30% chance to hit the incoming sea-skimmers (less in the terminal pop-up) so you can saturate them if all the missiles arrive at once, and you arrange it so that any leftovers from one ship are on course to hit the second ship. If you've got the bulk of your P-3s hunting subs, or you've used up a lot of your missiles on the other task group, then you may not have enough to do the job. The ships are radar-on and alert, so attempts to sneak in the missiles with a close-activation BOL attack won't work. They'll be engaging the moment your missiles clear the horizon.

Thanks Andrew. I thought it was great fun! Still like great problems to solve. Looking at the log it was the short-range defenses that chopped many of the missiles down (fired 12). I will look at a bigger attack next play-through.

Mike

It was a bit of a fight for me. I lost two of the 4 TUs of STANAVFORLANT, but succeeded in sinking the two soviet surface forces and bagging some submarines.

I elected to order the TU with the tanker toward Western Iceland Via the Denmark Strait.

Brief AAR:
STANAVORLANT's TU's are rerouted to a more NE orientation. (TU603.01.03 appeared to be on course to the equator)

Banak becomes a major distraction from the mission as Soviet forces begin to flood into Norway. Early attempts to stem the flow of attack aircraft and armor is abandoned. Instead, a narrow anti-ground mission is setup for all Norwegian armor and ground units. They will be decimated in the end.

Attention returns to the mission at hand. Two Soviet KUG's have been sighted and identified. Intel suggests multiple submarines will also be in the AO. Word from Banak is grim. Multiple F-5's have been taken down and the base's F-16 contingent is down to 2 aircraft after multiple run-ins with with radar equipped MiG-23's. Harpoon armed P-3's from both NAS Keflavik and Andoya sortie to lay down sonobouys and hunt for the Soviet KUG's. TU 603.01.01 with the help from P-3's ID's a possible SS nearby. Soon, a call goes up that Tu-16's are appearing west of Norway on course for Iceland. Multiple flights of F-4's take off on intercept with tankers in tow. Later, Adnoya reports multiple Su-24's inbound and the remaining F-16's at Bodo launch to stem the flow.

Over the next 8 hours attacks are conducted on the two Soviet KUG's with one being successful. 4 Soviet submarines are identified and sunk by TU's or P-3's. A Badger strike early on is able to sink DDH 205 St. Laurent with a single missile strike while later a second strike is able to get F 300 Oslo. No further attacks are successful. Andoya survives. Bodo survives.

The land war in Norway did not go well. The majority of Norwegian forces were destroyed or overrun. The battle at sea however was favorable for NATO. Barely.
