Every once in a while something very unusual happens. I have only seen this happen to a CV once before in another player's post.

And another unusual one I saved - surprised the IJN TF at 1000 yards in 3% moonlight. BB Ise had been hit by a sub torp and detached with a DD.

I haven't had any of these rare occurrences, but I think it is cool the devs included them. Adds to the mystery of the game.

I am not sure, but I think I have seen on forum someone posting ship exploding during repairs or something...

Tankers sometimes blow up while loading fuel. I have seen this maybe 2 times over a number of campaigns.

In the code of the game there are some weird messages as well, some of which probably not easy to get displayed during a game

Here are some, most of the others i came across in the code I have seen in some form or other on the forum already : (%s often means some action of some ship at some base (loading or whatever).

"%s vanishes at %.20s, leaving generations to wonder what became of her"
"Merchant Ships permanently re-flagged to Soviet! "
"%s moved away from piers at %s due to fires / %s moved away from repair ship at %s due to fires / %s towed out of shipyard at %s due to fires
"Mine handling accident aboard" / Mine detonates on deck of %s at %s" / REPAIRING SHIPS Unable to remove mines from %.20s at %s / %d Mines removed from %.20s and returned to pool "
"Magazines ordered flooded aboard %s "
"serious accident aboard %s while under repair at %s / Accident in shipyard at %s while repairing %s
" Cargo explodes during %s of %s at %s / Oil catches fire during %s of %s at %s / Massive Explosion during %s of %s at %s "

Some of them I personally have never seen before

I have seen 'Magazines ordered flooded." That's the only one, though.

I'm sure the % chance of occurrence is tiny, and requires strict preconditions.

I have taken out a Kongo with one torpedo that triggered a magazine explosion in my current game.

In prior games I have had a battery explode and catch fire in a midget sub...sinking her.

It specified a battery explosion?! That is great programming!

That happens if you send some allied xAK ships to a Soviet port and disband them. It is mentioned in the manual.

I never knew that, nor ever read that particular paragraph as well!

Actually, to be more precise, allied merchant ships reassigned to a Soviet HQ become Soviet - so they can move Soviet units etc between Soviet "motherland" bases. You can however pick up Soviets from, say, Fusan and move them to Japan with allied ships. The clarification is is the patch notes, rather than the manual:

quote:

Clarification changes
1. Some clarification and changes in regard to use of the Soviet Motherland bases. These
bases are those defined as having an original Soviet hex ownership of SOV_UNION (90),
MONGOLIA(91) or TANNU_TUVA(92).
a. Allied non-Soviet groups can't transfer to Soviet Motherland bases
b. Allied non-Soviet LCUs can't move into Soviet Motherland hexes
c. Alied non-Soviet LCUs can be landed by ship or air at Soviet Motherland bases
after Soviets are activated, but can’t move
d. Allied non-Soviet TFs or ships can't replenish from Soviet Motherland ports, even if
disbanded in port.
e. Allied merchant ships assigned to Soviet Hqs will become Soviet ships permanently
f. Re-assigning base command of Soviet Motherland bases needs to also be Soviet

I lost the Mutsu to a mine explosion that then detonated the magazine. That was fun---NOT!

In my recent game with Lew, I had an SS hit BB Georgia with a single torp and she blew up from a Mag Explosion as well.

CRAZY!

Another freaky thing - a duel between AMs and a surfaced sub. I think the sub won!

The freaky events narrative continues after a DD blows up a CA with a magazine hit - not a torpedo either, just 5"/38 goodness. Shades of the Battle off Samar!

Surface duels between allied subs & JAP merchants are legendary. (Until Mk13's start to work properly, that is). I have a few merchies with 60+ exp now, maybe I will make an elite Q-ship squadron out of them. :-)

The 7 Allied CAs and their DDs massacred the smaller Japanese Furutaka class CAs (all four) without a single Allied loss. Daytime battle - Allied CAs already had lots of daytime experience and started hitting from the start. One Japanese CA already had a sub torp hit and one had a Swordfish torp hit from Hermes nearby. Japanese launched torps at very long ranges - over 10K yards. No hits.

I had one of my BB's hit an allied PT boat at some crazy range where they should not have been even able to see it (20k +). With the main gun, of course!

I once had a 12.8k capacity Japanese tanker just blow up. It was loaded with fuel, of course, and just a couple hexes from Japan.

Apparently, someone lit up in the wrong place.

That happened to one of my tankers once too - not blowing up but self igniting as it steamed along the Kuriles. Two hexes from land so no accidental grounding, and no reports of contact with the enemy or mine hits. Maybe it was the same guy who just had to have his smoke!
