Morning Air attack on TF, near Salajar at 66,109

Estimated time to target is 15 minutes

Allied aircraft
F4F-3 Wildcat x 13
F4F-4 Wildcat x 14

Allied aircraft losses
SBD-3 Dauntless: 1 damaged

Japanese Ships
CVL Shoho, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
CV Zuikaku, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

yesterday was the critical day with our alpha strike on KB and due to the damage inflicted it's a mop up operation from today on as all our land and carrier based bombers are tasked to hunt the damaged enemy warships, priority on the burning carriers...

a rather small strike from the carriers attacks Shoho and Zuikaku, putting a 1000lb bomb into each ship... I consider both ships to be kills...

Aircraft Attacking:
5 x SBD-3 Dauntless releasing from 4000'
Naval Attack: 1 x 1000 lb SAP Bomb
4 x SBD-3 Dauntless releasing from 3000'

our main strike goes after the amphibs and the enemy BBs... have set most of the TBF to torp attacks as I wanted to make sure all damaged carriers will get their coupe de grace but not the carriers take torps but two of the IJN BBs including Yamato which seems to be a lucky outcome for us...

while Shoho and Zuikaku are done for sure the afternoon's main strike goes after the amphibs and the BBs again scoring only bomb hits this time... BB Yamato is in trouble now for sure, doubt she will make it back to Java and we also score damaging hits on enemy cruisers... considering the high number of bombers in this attack I would have expected some heavier damage to the enemy though but focussing on the BBs means the rest of the ships mostly get away unharmed...

Kendari didn't launch a single aircraft from it's huge airfield complex today... not even one...

today's air losses confirm at least one more IJN carrier sunk, most likely Zuikaku going down... we lose another week's replacement of SBD-3... it's mid 42 and it just feels insane that every single divebomber lost hurts so much playing the Allied... as the Japanese I wouldn't care about four times the losses as I would produce way over 100 dive bombers per month... as the Allied one has to make do with not even two dozen each month... how the hell could the Allied wage war in the Pacific with such pathetic replacements until mid 43?

some of KB's carriers managed to get away, a full speed sprint has put them out of my carriers' range and they will make Soerabaja tomorrow...

looks like the enemy is retreating in two different directions, what is left of KB is heading NW back to Java while the BBs and the amphibs are trying to escape to the North East...

I do not understand any of his moves

Any of them

Ok, he's taken a few knocks, but he's got to concentrate on taking out the bases so that he's not running into the worlds biggest (and most obvious) ambush

Just work his way down the islands

Ok, you might (almost certainly) still lose, but there is always the chance of the allied player making an error

And why on earth is he operating outside of LB Nav search?

I know you have to do it early on and later on as the respective sides, but now?

I'm not sure, would be cool to read an IJ AAR after the war has finished to hear his thoughts.

The enemy of course hasn't a clear picture like where are the Allied carriers for example but the main question would be to either go fully on the defense or take everything down to Darwin. The only good decision would be to fully go on the defense but at the same time it would be wrong as you can't have the Allied sitting just 10 hexes from Balikpapan and Mindanao with fully built up bases. It's a dilemma for him. Going for Ambon means he attacks a built up base but that base isn't nearly as strong as Kendari, Manado or Koepang for example. But he would have to take it quickly, very quickly and even then, it would just be an isolated base with level 8/9 airfields all around it. I can't see the Japanese making any progress in the area, no matter what they would do.

If he would ask the question on the forum I'm sure he would be told he has to take the area, no matter the cost and he would be told it's only mid 42 and the Allied aren't strong. The problem is the snowballing effect that has started in early 42 and now comes to a high. The enemy has no amphibious bonus anymore, he has to prepare his units for three months at best, he has no chance to achieve air superiority in the region and therefor he won't achieve naval superiority. Going in just means a lot of lost ships, at best the enemy can inflict losses within our fleets too (like he did at Koepang) but that chance has passed when our bombers took out his flattops yesterday.

It was his Midway, a month later than real life but more severe as we are also getting a shot at the rest of his fleet in the area.

enemy has set the Betties from Koepang on nav attack at quite some range again and they attack shipping at Koepang again which doesn't do them any good... the Dutch aces increase their kill tallies... guess Mundy wants to keep my carriers to go closer to Java but at long range they would be easily able to fend off Betty strikes and I won't go really close...

even though no carrier was in range anymore today we get confirmation of another enemy CV being sunk... 8 Jakes lost on the ground also confirms the sinking of enemy BB/CA...

two of the Dutch bombers were lost to ops, didn't increase my oppinion on their naval attack capabilities...

we will have one more day to attack enemy shipping, then the fleet will move back to Darwin and everything that still floats on the Japanese side will be too close to Java...

Wow - you have really done well with your mop-up of cripples! Well done!

I have never had my carrier aircraft attack in the morning phase unless there was a DL gained on the enemy during the night. Night search is the best way to do that.

Even given that weather and fatigue may be affecting your absent carrier strikes. Whenever I have carrier aircraft attack three days in a row they achieve almost nothing on the third day and their fatigue level is very high. Having two strikes in one day just hastens the fatigue level rise. Your marine pilots on big bases with lots of support will be able to attack more than three days in a row.

The game can fool you because of the way it reports air base damage. It really only reports the damage to airport facilities - hangars and such. It does not show you the runway damage which is the first to be fixed. And fighters don't need much facility to load their ammo and fuel...

OTOH, those KB aircraft would not have been there if the airfield was completely closed, so it worked out for you!

Yes that's true but we have bombed all enemy units at Balikpapan to death so there hasn't been anyone there to repair the damage for weeks and considering how many runway hits we've scored in our prior attacks I was and still am surprised the airfield wasn't damaged enough to prevent CAP. Even before, there were only two IJN base forces there, which don't even field two dozen eng squads plus a very small number of eng vehicles and those have been mostly disabled for months already.

wonder how long it's going to take until the IJN is trying to do something against these milkruns to Rabaul... with my carriers being inside the SRA the enemy could take the chance and run in some naval forces which I wouldn't be much afraid of if we aren't meeting a BB and I think those are either sunk already or in damaged state after the massacre near Kendari...

due to having air superiority in the Bismarck Sea it would be a major risk for the IJN and our ships doing the bombardments at Rabaul are all night trained and have radar so they aren't easy pickings...

thought it's time to wear down the enemy invaders at Ambon having twice the assault value and way more firepower there and at the first moment I thought it would be a nice result inflicting twice the losses to the enemy just to find out I'm so used to playing the Japanese that I was looking at the Allied losses and thought these would be the enemy's... my units do gain some experience that way but they suffer enough disabled squads to be in need for two weeks rest...

the enemy still has subs around Hawaii which is rather surprising to me as I usually don't have them operate that far from my bases that long after war's outbreak... wouldn't want to have one of these medium sized tankers being hit, I desperately need every tanker I have to keep the fleet going even after suffering only minimal TK/AO losses...

the Imperial Japanese Navy flagship Yamato was confirmed sunk today! That's a huge blow to the IJN, I usually can make way more use of Yamato and Musashi than they were able to do in real life...

BB Yamato is reported to have been sunk near Kendari on Jul 15, 1942

castor troy: a look at the ground losses confirms another enemy carrier sunk this turn as these losses aren't all from Balikpapan's airfield...

I think those extra losses could have come from disbanding or withdrawing a unit or two - abandon the damaged planes to save the pilots.

Why? Just send all the pilots back to reserve.

Can you strip all the pilots from an existing unit? How, then, can you start rebuilding the unit?

You can send all pilots from the unit to RESERVE. As long as you have 1 plane moved out somewhere, you can rebuild the unit with planes and pilots from the reserve. Also, if you DISBAND damaged planes they do not show up in the loss report (though they are often lost from the game)

I would be 100% certain those losses represent another CV sinking

But those would show up as lost on the ground and not ops. This is the first campaign I've played where I see these high ops losses for carrer based ac for a repeated time now. No idea what Mundy is doing but it's not what I usually see.

In the case mentioned above I'm absolutely sure the ground losses were coming from a sunk carrier.

probably doing one or two attacks here in the future just to increase experience within my units but otherwhise we will let the enemy starve to death... the longer it takes, the longer we won't see those units being rebuilt...

I've got recon in the air in all directions and have no clue where the enemy frontline actually is... Java is stacked with troops, there must be over 150 different units on the island but everything else in reach of my heavy bombers seems to be empty... and when I say empty, I really mean empty (with the exception of Rabaul)...

SIGINT seems to confirm this as an enemy division is going to Manila, it should got to Mindanao, Borneo or Rabaul for example...

54th Division is loaded on AK Azumasan Maru moving to Manila.
