Japanese are banging their head on the wall again but it doesn't matter much because even those failed attacks are a success for them actually as our combat strenght is decreasing as much as theirs but they can afford it and the Dutch can't...

while the Japanese have cleared Java we have further prepared our defensive position North of Darwin and we have also prepared for our first major offensive as we are going to land troops on New Britain... the carriers are covering Force Z and two USN heavy cruiser squadrons as they take position SW of Rabaul in preparation of a naval bombardment tomorrow... some of our task forces were picked up by nav search but DL is low and I'm not sure the enemy can imagine what is going to start tomorrow, no air attacks out of Rabaul were flown... a day behind are our amphib convoys going to Gasmata, some 700av consisting of a US Inf div, Aussie troops, some armor and lots of base forces and engineers to build up Gasmata's fighter strip into a level 6 airfield to keep Rabaul suppressed and provide a safe port for a cruiser squadron that's going to be tasked with naval bombardments of Rabaul...

while I'm not afraid of KB anymore I'm not yet seeking a 1:1 engagement as it might result in damaged/sunk USN carriers even if we most likely could destroy KB so it's nice to get a sighting by Catalinas of KB going to Soerabaja today... after the bombardments go in at Rabaul I don't expect much reaction by the IJN and the only major airfield in the region will be plastered...

heavy and modern light cruisers work best for naval bombardments IMO as they are fast and deadly and when the USN leaves the place at sunset Rabaul's airbase was nuked... how on Earth not a single enemy aircraft was destroyed is beyond me though as there are at least some 100 enemy aircraft at the base...

don't know what the reason is but it's odd when you nuke a base and you don't even damage a single aircraft followed the next day but another nuke and now you also get all those aircraft... feels like the routine jumping over a code line...

nav search from Gasmata has picked up two convoys today, not sure what this is exactly... Rabaul's airfield being neutralized and not a threat I have ordered Force Z and the carriers to leave our amphib convoys and intercept enemy shipping East of Rabaul, we have an ASW TF in the lead... the cruiser squadrons are on station at Gasmata where they can replenish from AKEs and we have 100 P-40E for CAP duty but I doubt we will either see air or naval attacks, the whole operation has been going very smoothly so far...

oh boy, looks like the invasion of Ambon is already incoming, most likely the reason why we have spotted KB off Soerabaja... takes a couple of days until our reinforcements from Darwin will reach Ambon so that could become interesting timing...

4th Tank Regiment is loaded on xAP Hakusan Maru moving to Ambon.
2/Yokosuka 4th SNLF is loaded on a Japanese xAK moving to Ambon.

Dutch patrol picked up KB and two other task forces leaving Java, heading South East... pretty sure that's the Ambon invasion force... with our Navy being occupied with the invasion of New Britain we will just let the enemy move in and won't intervene, if he's not bringing halve a dozen divisions Ambon is a good place to bog the enemy down after the landings as it's a jungle hex and we should have level 5 forts when the battle begins... I'd like to get the reinforcements in though, bringing our total av up to around 5-600...

the airforce has been alerted but we are not going to fly offensive strikes against KB, this would only lead to aircraft losses for no gain at all... we've got 500 fighters in the area so KB would rather not fly strikes against our bases either though...

My guess is that the first bombardment and bombing raised the MDL greatly so that the bombardment recon on the second night had no problems spotting the aircraft revetments.

still doesn't feel correct for me, there are days after days you hit aircraft (which are at the airfield) just to be followed by a day where not a single aircraft is even damaged at the base even that you completely nuke it. Doesn't feel like it's WAD and I seriously doubt that they have something like you describe in the code.

flak fire is just too much for the bombers for continuos missions against Rabaul... out of the 60+ units spotted there many must be AA units... hitting something from that height coupled with the AA fire makes it pretty much a lost affair but we do want to see Rabaul's AA units using up all the supply at the base... guess suppressing the base will be the cruisers' task...

KB is moving South, three TFs spotted... really strikes me to see such a low number of fighters which is pretty much consistent whenever KB is spotted by nav search... looks like there aren't more than a couple of CV plus two or at best three CVL/CVE I guess... if we meet more than 150 Zeroes I would be really surprised... going into the Triangle of Death could be suizide for KB if my carriers were nearby but we are operating around New Britain...

due to earlier carrier losses KB's main disadvantage will be the lower number of available fighters and we have just torched another two dozen of Zeroes for no result for the Japanese today... we do have several Dutch aces flying CAP over Timor...

no doubt KB and the other spotted task forces are going for Ambon, as SIG INT already suggested... our troop convoy bringing reinforcements was ordered to cancel unloading yesterday when KB was North of Timor as I didn't wanted to risk getting them caught on the ships (about 80% were unloaded already) but we left the supply convoy at the base expecting Mundy to stand down his bombers after they ran into CAP at Koepang yesterday... well, he didn't stand the bombers down and a big strike attacks my supply convoy that is covered by only three USAAF fighter groups... my bad, the plan was to increase their number by another two fighter groups which seem to have been forgotten as they were still flying CAP over Darwin today...

those fighters that were airborne sent a warm welcome to the incoming strike as they downed quite a number of Zeroes as well as a lot of bombers but 64 fighters weren't enough to annihilate such a strike even with a perfect pre warning time... in the end we lose all but two ships from our convoy but the IJNAAF again paid a heavy price for it...

entering the Triangle of Death has cost the KB over 100 aircraft in two days already... we lose more fighters than yesterday but Zero losses are severe again and the enemy will also have problems replacing all those bomber pilots with all the losses in the last seven months...

wanted to increase our assault value to 500 but couldn't bring all reinforcements due to the earlier than expected appearance of KB... guess the enemy will unload more troops tomorrow but as it stands now even without our reinforcements the enemy won't be able to achieve anything here... we've got level 4 or 5 forts and it's a jungle/rough hex, our troops are fully prepped...

we've spotted a big surface combat TF with KB the day when our fighters tried to defend the supply convoy at Ambon and the fighters were moved out the day after as we feared a naval bombardment... it came in today, has heavily hit the base and killed all remaining ships at the anchorage except one... the enemy has to go back to Soerabaja to replenish so that's a large naval force that has just been taken out of the operation...

KB is covering the invasion at Ambon and today we have spotted an enemy convoy coming from Soerabaja also heading towards Ambon, clearly more enemy units as Mundy realized he can't achieve anything with the troops there already... we have moved USMC dive bombers to Kendari, level 8 airfield to hit the incoming convoy most likely ending up three or four hexes SW of Kendari... all depends on KB, if the enemy moves KB West to cover the incoming convoy our dive bombers will most likely be mauled, their range has been limited to four hexes...

despite having spotted the enemy convoy West of Kendari several times during the morning the Marines didn't fly a single sortie... during the afternoon we get a whopping 20 SBDs (out of 54 bombers there) to attack that high value target... scoring 1000lb bomb hits on three ships with troops aboard and the highlight, detonating CL Tama's magazines... the freighter and the two AMC will have a hard time surviving the bomb hits while it's probably not hopeless for the AMC...

probably shouldn't complain after killing that light cruiser but having such a high value target next to our level 8 base and getting only 20% of our max sorties is just bullsh*t...

while IJN heavy cruisers are formidable opponents the IJN really lacks with their light cruisers which can't be compared to the excellent modern USN CLs... still, sinking one is nice as many of them can be upgraded to CLAAs that also carry some depth charges... CL Tama blew up 180 miles West of Kendari after suffering devastating 1000lb bomb hits by USMC dive bombers...

couldn't find a picture in good quality of the real ship...

that's the current situation... as expected (better say hoped) KB was kept near Ambon to cover the invasion fleet there which enabled our SBDs at Kendari to inflict some damage on the reinforcement convoy... nearly no bombers attacked so the enemy could have as well got away completely unharmed today... as you can see we have sortied the fleet from Darwin, we are not going to directly engage KB but we are going to try to hit the enemy convoy which I expect to move away from Kendari in a South Eastern direction which could bring it in bomber range of my carriers that are going to position on the South coast of Timor...

if KB is alerted by my airstrikes and moves in to cover the convoy we might see a carrier engagement tomorrow, KB has stood down it's bombers lately, after suffering losses to my LBA fighters so I expect KB to fully act defensively... our bombers are limited to 7 hexes, 4 USMC Wildcat units are tasked to fly escort...

it's getting better as we ordered a Dutch PT boat squadron to intervene with the invasion TF still unloading at Ambon, the Japanese must have underestimated the time it takes to unload without the magic amphib bonus... was hoping for at least some collisions within the enemy convoy but the Dutch even torpedo hits on two fat xAP that still carried troops... we lose one PT to a direct hit... we really have had excellent results with our PT boats since the start of the hostilities...

as the saying is, even the best plan won't survive the first contact with the enemy... in this case the enemy convoy that was hit yesterday was turning around and is retiring towards Soerabaja, most likely until KB is freed for escort duty... the damaged ships are limping towards Java but didn't make it far... the USMC divebombers were flown back to Darwin and our carriers sitting South of Timor had no targets to strike at... even if Mundy most likely didn't even realize it was the best decision he could make...

while IJN heavy cruisers are formidable opponents the IJN really lacks with their light cruisers which can't be compared to the excellent modern USN CLs... still, sinking one is nice as many of them can be upgraded to CLAAs that also carry some depth charges... CL Tama blew up 180 miles West of Kendari after suffering devastating 1000lb bomb hits by USMC dive bombers...

couldn't find a picture in good quality of the real ship...

Wow, you really need to just finish this game off and find another opponent.....Mundy seems like a first-class chap, but probably needs to work on his game. A couple random notes:

1. It's not a big deal, but WTF are Idas doing at Rabaul? The Ki-36 is about the last plane one should have at Rabaul or really anywhere outside of China

2. What's wrong with using the CS units? Agreed on conversion, but there are many months before you can convert them in most mods, you may as well use them. Lots of JAKES on search, some RUFES when those are available, and a few extra heavy AA guns in the TF won't hurt either.....(edit: except for MIZUHO, she should be ported due to speed)

I've been enjoying the regular updates, Castor. Once again an unusual situation you have here. Japan's glass sword is already showing chips.
