here's the map... we're at the end of May now and the Japanese have considerable run out of steam... due to his decisions to reduce our fortresses on Luzon and Java which requires an insane amount of troops the Japanese missed their chance to advance deeper and faster... I've never faced such a big enemy army at Clark Field as Mundy employed there but these units were taken from the usual advances into Burma or further South into the SRA and/or an attack on Darwin or Port Moresby...

while we have not reinforced Burma at this point but concentrate on the defense of India not losing Rangoon has enabled us to already bring close to 750,000 tons of supplies into China which means China can't be overrun as all our troops there are fully supplied and will stay supplied, coupled with the fact that we are digging in everywhere... except one attempt at the Northern front in China the whole theatre has been quiet since both sides took their positions... if China stays quiet I'm perfectly happy with...

one of our main goals the first months was the defense of Port Moresby and Darwin, I see both bases as absolutely essential for the Allied strategy and both bases have been declared safe some time around the end of February, only an absolute all in attack by the Japanese could perhaps achieve something but that would mean also my Navy has to be destroyed and I saw that as highly unlikely... next step was to create what I call the "Triangle of Death" which is a zone the enemy already entered once, during the Japanese attempt to invade Koepang... centered round Darwin, my main fleet base on the map, we have strongholds at Koepang, Kendari, Manado down to Sorong on the far East and Ambon as a supporting base in the center... these bases require at least halve a dozen IJA divs if they want to have a any chance to take the base and only if I am not able to bring in further reinforcements after the enemy has landed... again, highly unlikely that my Navy and the airforce in the area is getting completely destroyed, this chance has already passed for the Japanese... as soon as Wasp arrives I will have around 630 carrier based aircraft in the region and if KB sticks it's nose into the Triangle of Death we will engage and most likely end any Japanese naval presence in the area... I expect KB to field some 350 carrier based aircraft at best so we nearly have a 2:1 superiority and the USN will soon field F4F-4, SBD-3 and TBF on their carriers, supported by a USMC F4F-3 squadron on each of the 90 capacity carriers... also the two British carriers are in the region, both with 33 fighters aboard (one British Sea Hurricane squadron and one Canadian Martlet squadron)...

the enemy took Rabaul early which is a torn our flank and this will be one of our first major operations... the South and Central Pacific have been quiet, the enemy took the Gilberts in the starting days but didn't move further which allowed me to garrison all the important atolls and the Fijis... I doubt we will see any further Japanese move into this direction... pretty much as always I totally ignore the Northern front, just too far away from my major thrust and diverting troops, aircraft or ships into the area would be a waste...

one doesn't have to be a genius to realize with the current frontline where the main axis of advance will happen as we have more than just a foothold within the SRA, with Balikpapan being neutralized by our B-17s at Kendari/Manado the enemy has lost access to a big amount of fuel/oil already... while I see it as pretty much impossible to take the area North of Darwin the enemy has to at least grab some land as he can't accept us having such a strong position in his soft underbelly and if he concentrates force here we might have a chance to consolidate Burma and reinforce it but I won't do that within the next two months I guess as I don't know where the IJ juggernaut will turn to and it's only the end of May 42 after all...

The triangle looks good, but when you listed 6ish bases that sounds more like a hexagon of death!

IJA attacks at Malang again and even though they fail to get even a 1:1 adjusted av they knocked down another fort level and didn't lose (destroyed) as many troops as in previous attacks while our losses increase to a level I don't really like... disabling nearly 900 Japanese combat squads does hurt though...

being mostly a Japanese player I'm always again amazed about Allied SIG INT... if you check this daily it's pretty much impossible to be surprised by the Japanese on a strategic level...

I think these naval bombardments are not doing the Japanese any good... ok, we lose our base forces but the enemy is destroying lots of supply he would take when the base falls... out of 90k supply at start we still have about 40k at the base...

that's not FOW, there are really a lot of damaged Betties in the replay... they only have to make 1 hex back to Soerabaja so it doesn't result in a lot of losses though but I'm still amazed the enemy keeps attacking at 8000ft... going in at 10000 ft would completely avoid flak fire and probably achieve the same hit rate on the ground... I do lose more supplies though as the flak puts up a lot of supplies into the air for little gain...

CV Wasp arrives at Balboa which brings our carrier based ac strenght up to 630... even though I guess my carrier fleet can already compete with KB and leave the fight as the winner I'm going to wait for Wasp arrive at Darwin and will then actively seek an engagement with Kido Butai... Wasp arrives with biplane dive bombers and needs precious SBD-3 for upgrades which I can hardly spare but we have to use the most advanced airframes on the carriers, means the land based Marines have to rely on mostly outdated and obsolete aircraft all the way until mid/late 43...

today's SIG INT... while the enemy hasn't moved against Burma yet he's definately preparing for the move but he's also moving more units to Java to break the defense at Malang... with yet another IJA div going there I have not much hope to hold Malang for long...

15th Army is planning for an attack on Rangoon.
7th Division is loaded on AK Ayatosan Maru moving to Soerabaja.

damn... enemy gets a 1:1 now and the last fort level is gone... we take losses we can't afford and the battle seems to be sooner lost than I like... having our assault value at the base more or less halved with this attack it means the Dutch won't make it for long, the enemy has increased his base assault value to over 3000 which is quite insane... we have destroyed well over 1000 combat squads and have disable many more so the enemy is most likely fielding some 5000 base av on Java... against such a force the Dutch have no chance...

Fascinating to me that Mundy throws all those small units into the breach: naval guard units and SNLFs, airborne units that are battalion sized, even individual companies. I have only ever used formed divisions for major battles. It seems to be working, though...

About the Medium Bomber results - Sardaukar had good results in his most recent AAR post. (See below). The B-25D1 is an attack bomber but the B-26b is just a medium level bomber. Unfortunately we don't know how many of the hits came from each bomber type.

Morning Air attack on TF, near Emirau Island at 104,121

Weather in hex: Light rain

Raid spotted at 18 NM, estimated altitude 4,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 4 minutes

Allied aircraft
Beaufighter VIc x 2
B-25D1 Mitchell x 6

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
xAKL Yobai Maru, Shell hits 7, Bomb hits 2, and is sunk
xAKL Kumi Maru #4, Bomb hits 3, and is sunk
xAKL Kumi Maru #2, Bomb hits 3, and is sunk
xAKL Chitose Maru, Bomb hits 1, and is sunk

Japanese ground losses:
126 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 5 destroyed, 3 disabled

That is because they attack at 1000 ft. With good Low Naval skill and that altitude, even ordinary medium bombers become deadly.

The strategic situation for Japan here is both ugly and hopeless. This game isn't going to make it to 1944. I don't understand the obsession with Malang, a base that can be easily neutralized, bypassed, and left to starve.

Plus quite a few other obsessions. Like refusing to believe that ships are vulnerable to massed B-17 attacks in port...multiple times. To extent not to even CAP properly.

Doesn't work for me. Have tried it on and on and on with 70 low nav skill Sallies/Helens/Mitchels etc. Had hundreds if not thousand trained pilots in the pools just to find out they "never" hit at 1000ft with reduced payload and take a huge morale hit. So next try in several games, 70 skill nav bomb, attacking at 2000ft. Same, literally no hits. Attacking from all heights, 2-6000ft, same. I have decided to completely stop now during this campaign and use the bombers I know they can hit ships.

I have not understood the obsession of killing strongholds either but I can tell you that at least halve of my opponents in all those years were doing the same, no matter if Allied or Japanese. There are bases I also wouldn't ignore either (e.g. Singapore, Rangoon) but Mundy cleared Singapore, brought everything to Luzon and then brought everything to Java. In the meantime he completely lost steam and I reinforced North of Darwin. Having such a position in the SRA I can only agree, if I won't win the war by the end of 43 something will have gone terrible wrong in my coming offensives.

first I've thought the enemy would be crazy to shock attack but it didn't go as bad for them as I would have thought... we are going to surrender soon at Malang but we killed two regiments of troops again today... the Dutch mountaineers will have killed way more IJA troops in the end than we lose Dutch troops even though we will lose way more victory points for ground losses...

what about that? today's bad news as the Japanese finally capture Malang and have completely cleared Java... the Dutch fought extremely well in terms of inflicting losses to the attacker but in the end they still had to surrender and the winner are the Japanese... pretty sure we have destroyed more Japanese combat squads than we lost so I see the defense of Java a success in the long run even though Japanese squads can be replaced easily but it's going to take some time and it's also going to decrease exp in the Japanese units while they most likely gained more in the fighting than they will lose taking replacements...

as in the previous fights Mundy brought overwhelming force and went with his head through the wall but it has completely stalled his operations in other areas but he now has freed up quite an army for his next targets...

SIG INT reporting enemy units preparing for Ambon which is in the center of the Triangle of Death... if the enemy is serious going into this region it's going to be a Kamikaze mission... Ambon isn't the most heavily garrisoned base in the region but we do have a couple of Australian bgds plus support there so the enemy would need to land several divisions to quickly take the base against our entrenched troops there and it's going to be more or less impossible to keep us from reinforcing the base... a convoy was ordered to bring some more armor and another inf unit...from Darwin...

II/19th Naval Guard Unit is planning for an attack on Ambon.
