I'm having a hard time completing this scenario. First off, side briefing is misleading. The first paragraph mentions that "there are no strike aircraft on Iceland at present" and that "submarine threat is the main problem". Intel on enemy forces, however, suggests that some Tu-22M Backfires (strike) are actually operating out of Keflavik. Which is ok (albeit a bit alarming) since you also have to consider the air defense aspect of the situation. The really challenging part is that Task Force air defense has to be based on A-4 Skyhawks armed with AIM-9Hs (i.e. aircraft lacking the performance characteristics to deal with the Tu-22M) and surface ships with limited area defense capability (considering the potential threat of AS-4 ASMs).

After neutralizing all sub threats as well as a dozen Tu-22Ms while sustaining acceptable losses (most cargo vessels would still make it to the safe heaven), I thought the battle would be over. Then suddenly another swarm of Backfires appears, floods the Task Force with AS-4s...and the battle is over.

Mission editor showed there are actually 25 Tu-22Ms stationed in Keflavik (with a large inventory of AS-4s).

Question is what is the right tactic to win this battle?

The trick is not to get the task force spotted in the first place. This means downing any Recon planes that come your way before they reach the task force and sinking any Soviet AGI's with extreme prejudice. I let my S-2's with rockets handle the AGI's since they are already out there for ASW. For the planes, I set up a CAP to have two Skyhawks always up and an E-1 for spotting. Both should be north of the Task Force. Finally, make sure to turn off all active emissions from the ships of the task force to prevent the Soviets from picking you up via ESM,

Thank you for the reply. You are absolutely correct. I had already managed to down all Tu-95s long before they could achieve a radar contact with the Task Force. Same applies to the AGIs, they had all been identified and sunk very early in the game with rockets and Mk82s. Active emissions were off as well (I should have mentioned these in the original post).

This did not stop the Backfires from coming though. And it wasn't like they were searching for the convoy; they were following an attack pattern as if the location of the convoy was known. So I opened up the scenario in the editor and noticed that one of the escorting frigates (USS Pharris) has been marked as auto-detectable, which might have triggered the ASUW strikes.

Not sure if this is deliberate or a bug in my scenario.

Oh. I actually lost the Pharris about 30 minutes in. It was a Charlie. Maybe that's why I didn't encounter the Backfires?

Pharris is auto detectable by the Soviets so if she survives it's a guaranteed Backfire raid. On my recent playthroughs (without altering via editor) I detach Pharris of is a different direction and then use hers a a active picket. I also alter the convoy drastically to put more distance and aways from subs along the expected route.
