Wondering if the system scale will be moddable. Always been a pet peeve of mine that moon planetary orbits cross other planets solar orbits. Like if the moon did a sling around Mars every time we passed it before returning back to continue loop around earth.

Probably not though, as the systems are a integrated part of the galaxy, and changing system-scale would mess up the star system distance spacing. Still, one can hope. :P

Ok, the galaxy map zoom in to local scale seems to have won the vote. I'll be posting something up for you all tomorrow.

When did this happen? Could have sworn it said something else recently.

Also, random question. Has anything been announced with respect to Linux support for DW2?

I recently remembered to update my sig.

DW2 is only planned as a Windows release, unfortunately. The engine does not have the ability to run natively on Linux. I don't know how well it will run in emulation on Linux or Mac, but we'll find out before release and testers who have both Windows and Linux/Mac systems to give that a try during beta would be appreciated.

Late congrats on the promotion (unsure when it was, but your linkedin could use some updating too, lol).

I'd be happy to help test out a few scenarios if any additional help is needed, under either Mac or Linux (via wine or hardware passthrough). I ran a windows gaming VM under linux for years.

I watch a planetary zoom video and it's really amazing, can't wait for beta testing

But one thing I didn't see from the video is a civilian ship and this made me concern about the destiny of the civilian ship or even the existence of civilian ship at all, I wish it's still as dense as the first game cuz I honestly love to see it in 3D environment.

There were civilian ships in there, fear not. The private economy is still very much part of DW2. The civilian ships have those small circle symbols.

Thank you, Erik.

Would you say there are many new features from DW1 or mainly updated existing ones?

Loving all the new information Erik, we really appreciate it.

I was wondering a few things.

1) Since ships can now effectively "dock" inside stations visually, will certain sized stations only be able to make up to certain class sizes of ships? For instance a Small Station not having the space to build something as large as a Battleship?

2) Since the engine is in 3d now and we can see the weapon modules on ships, was wondering how large in comparison to the ships the graphic art for those weapons are. Beams, bolts, missiles ,ect. In DWU they were pretty large comparable to the ships, would the size of weapons fire also be something that's tweak-able like the sizes of planets in relation to the ships?

3) I wont ask specifics unless you're open to answering about other topics, but im super curious about what changes if any have been made to colonies, planet management and troops/planetary combat. Even DWU's system for invasions, while simple to understand, was one of the best implementations to simulate planetary invasion that I've seen in a 4x game.

Thanks again for all the new information Erik! Looking forward to January and cant wait to sign up for Beta!

I am hopeful that parts and especially weapons for the player can be renamed by the player. The names used are 'space'-like but I would like to
rename weapons for torpedoes, missiles, beam weapons etc for weapons from Star Wars, Star Trek, Starfire, etc.

The sadistic part is that Erik said there'd be different beta phases with a limited number of testers for each. Not everybody who wants it might make it to the first beta round in January. But if there's loud protest and risk of planetwise rebellion they might tweak that policy.

Hello! What about interface stile? in the screenshots, we can see an interface that is very similar to DW1. But the DW1 interface is very outdated and does not fit into the canons of the modern UI. In addition, the interface in this style creates a certain sense of hopelessness. Color scheme, font, symbols, icons, sliders, sprites. All this suggests that everything is bad in the empires. Even in colonies with the highest happiness, sullen creatures walk the streets, in cities overflowing with garbage and yellow tones, in the style of old films about space travel, produced by different countries.

What do you think about this and will there be a change in the interface? I understand that HD icons will probably be added, but the style itself will remain the same as shown in the screenshots? And will there be additional graphical improvements? I believe that in terms of ship design, we will see a truly revolutionary system that continues the idea of DW1, combining ideas from other projects + completely new solutions. Do you think that the graphics component should be improved or you are completely satisfied with it?

I'm not in any way saying that the interface is bad or the graphics are bad. With the features that are supposed to be in the game, this appearance is really great

About the star field shown on the screenshots: there are way too many stars. I hope you'll lower the number of stars to make the background more realistic.
It currently makes your background image look like it has "grain" on it. You should also make some stars more bright (a few of them).

Hi. Quoting my own previous comment because after watching videos (Youtube and Twitch streams) of the Distant Worlds 2 preview, I am still a bit disappointed.
I think there are still way too many stars in the background star field. Please consider reducing their amount to make the space scenery more realistic. Remove half (or more) of them but also consider to make some of these stars slighly bigger and more bright, to add variety.

As you can see, there are so many that it made me think the texture used was grainy, like a low quality jpeg: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/fb.asp?m=4922178

About nebulas, my other previous message is still valid. IMO, it would be cool if nebulas had be more gradients, more vivid colors.
Current ones are a bit "dull": https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=5084829

This is what I have been expecting from your upcoming game.

Please, make your game more beautiful, like this:
