First, it's wonderful to see such a polite group of gamers here...often not the case elsewhere. Also great to see folks like Wild Bill so active on the board! On to my question: I played SP way back in the DOS days, and loved it, but lost touch for a variety of reasons...anyway, I'm VERY RUSTY on the use of the interface, and having problems with unit selection for the Tulagi Campaign in particular. Wild Bill says in his introduction that I'll need a company of raiders, a platoon of engineers, and landing craft to get on the island. The problems are as follows: 1. No matter which raider company type I buy, I don't have enough points left over to buy the engineers, let alone the landing craft. 2. Sometimes, when I click the buy button, I only get certain elements of the unit you're viewing, not all of it, even if I have the points. 3. If I do manage to get through the unit selection and into deployment and try to load one too many units on an lvt, the game doesn't prompt me as to whether i want to load anyway, I just lose the unit, a costly thing to have happen! I know it says in the manual that you will lose the unit if you continue to load, but that this happens WITHOUT a prompt is particularly annoying... Can any of you folks tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance,

HerrBarron: Let me take a crack at it. Ques #2 if you don't have enough points to buy an entire unit you will receive what ever your points will allow, sometimes by design some units won't be available during selection due to war as a whole, supply lines cut reinforcements not able to make it, etc. This is usually by design by the Campaign creator, you shouldn't see that problem in individual scenario's. Ques #3 Try deleting the steel.prf file within the /save directory, the game will recreate it when relaunched. I've never heard of a none load anyway when you have too many troops (theres no option to turn on or off) so I think this is a glitche. If it only happened in that 1 Campaign I'll look to see if there where any updates to it. Ques #1 I've seen the same problem with other Campaign's/Scenario's and I think it's because it was designed and then the game went through some OOB's updates that might have changed the cost of units which where different from when the Campaign/Scen was first designed. Make sure your running the most updated SPWAW which is ver 6.1 and those problems might be adjusted within the updates.

Hi, gmenfan, Thanks for the reply! I am running version 6.1. Also, the intro says to read the text files that came with the campaign; I can't seem to locate any such text files; they might have shed some light on the unit cost issues I've been having. I will delete the steel.prf as suggested. As to the load anyway prob, no, I've seen it elsewhere as well, not just the Tulagi campaign. Regard to all, and thanks again, gmenfan!

1) While purchasing, it's often possible to delete certain units within a larger purchase, i.e., purchase a company, then click on, say, the mortars (over on the right where all units purchased are listed) and they will be deleted. HOWEVER, they must be listed apart from the other units in that grouping, or you will delete the whole shebang. 2) With "Rarity" on (the default preference) you may see certain items in red. This means they are unavailable. You can still purchase an entire unit but those things that are red in that unit will not be purchased. 3) During Deployment, I often experiment with how many troops, etc., can be loaded into a particular vehicle. I've never "lost" units by trying to overload. If I try to load more than the vehicle will carry, they just won't load, but they don't disappear. The only time I lose men loading is if I try to put, say, a 10-man squad on a tank that will only carry 8 men. In that case they will load but I'll "lose" the other two (and it will prompt me by saying they can't all be loaded, and do I want to continue). I've never ahd that sort of thing happen with a regular "transport" vehicle load, as I said. [ August 05, 2001: Message edited by: Warrior ]

Another thing to remember HerrBaron in this campaign is you get 225 support points to use after you core units are purchased so you can pick up some extra units there that you couldn't afford before. Just remember support units bought are for individual battles only and will not stay with you throughout the duration of the Campaign so choose wisely.

Thanks, Warrior, I've discovered this afternoon that the loading problem i've been having was largely due to my own ineptitude. As to the items in red, somehow I missed that in the manual, and had forgotten to ask, so the information is quite welcome; I wondered about the stuff in red! Many Thanks,

Thanks for the document, gmenfan! Nice to have the background for the campaign. Wasn't sure what the document contained when i remarked that it wasn't here. Thanks Again! HerrBaron

Now that things are settling down with the OOB's, I will be updating Tulagi as far as points go. There have been point differances throughout the differant versions of SPWAW that through of the original intent of the campaign. Wild Bill did a lot of the text work for me as this was my first campaign and I owe him a big debt of gratitude. I did this campaign under Version 4.? IIRC.

I know it is not historical to do so, but when I played it under 4.3 I bought a marine para company and a platoon of engineers. I used the support points from the first battle to buy enough planes to fly them in, and was able to drop right on the big victory cluster. The Japanese never had a chance. Three very easy decisive victories, if McArthur had not been so dead set against paras, they might have seen more use. Now that I have 6.1 I'll try to give it a go with a raider company after you update the campaign. It will be interesting to see if the raider company can do even near as well as the para company. thanks, John.
