I am mainly concerned with playing against the AI. I have everything on except C&C. True Troop on, Rarity on.
First, I have noticed some characters following a selection's name. For some it is obvious it indicates an upgraded weapon. Is there any pattern to the +, -, and * (an especially irritating one since this makes me think the unit is spotted if I don't pay attention) marks?
When buying a combination, say a company, I have noticed that some times a unit isn't available. I realize this is due to the rarity on. It appears that even if I don't receive the unit's that are red'ed out, I am still deducted points. Another issue with rarity is that if you purchase a unit, then get your money back, it deducts that unit from the limit so that I have actually made a unit unavailable just by having second thoughts.
Also regarding combinations, what is the advantage? I initially assumed there was cost advantage, but this doesn't seem to be the case. I can only guess it is to help avoid limits with the number of groupings (forgive me, new to this and don't know terminology). I have also heard of some people removing parts of combinations to get money back. Is this from another version than 8.0? I can only seem to be able remove a whole section (everything that leader is in charge of).
Thanks in advance.

A sniper assaults a Sherman tank (going in excess of 15 mph) for 20%. M4 Sherman tank is destroyed.
Is this like when a deer runs out in front of a car? Does the Sherman make some violent turn to avoid the lunatic, only to roll over or hit a tree?

I dont play against the AI with rarity on. It just doesnt seem to effect him. I also have noticed that a lot of the members do not play with it on against the AI.

I will be cutting rarity off after this campaign. I understand its intended purpose but it doesn't effectively do it. Instead it just makes things inconvenient, and it is unlikely a battlefield commander would run out of Recon Scouts or other such mundane unit ("Hey waterboy, come here. Take this rifle. Go out and look for the enemy. You are our new average recond force.")

It is a good feature but it needs to be reworked. Since I doubt this will happen, we will just all cut it off : )

In the mean time though, the rarity ratings: does a lower number mean it is more common and a higher number mean rarer? I usually only see 0 1 2.

Dont take this as fact but think i saw somewhere, higher number rarer item. True about the second thought. You make a wrong dicision it costs you.
The thing again with combos is you get more chance to decrease suppresion with the extra HQ unit. At least this is the way i understood it. You dont save by buying in bulk in other words.

Wouldn't it be better to buy in piece-meal? It seems there is no advantage to buying combo's since you can just go purchase a HQ unit anytime you want to and then assign the previous units to that HQ by using the "Assign Unit to New HQ" button in the deploy screen.
I would much rather make up my groupings of men if there is no advantage whatsoever to the combo's. 3 FT Engineers seem more useful than a FT engineer and 2 regular engineers.
Maybe there is something I'm missing.

Of course I still have to buy some combinations since the choices for sections can be limited. I think if you want just two units of infantry units to fight other infantry and not mess with the MG's and the mortars, you have one or two choices, namely the Ranger Section and Airborn Section (don't quote me on this one). That last statement is in regard to American forces of course, and I'm dealing with a very specific example.

I have from the very start of playing SP bought in piece meal. I like to set up my own companys. Ill have 3 platoons of infantry and 1 platoon of heavy weapons. That includes 2 sec mg, 1 sec of at rifles which i assign to each infantry platoons. 1 sec 81 mortors and an fo. Will buy 1 sec scouts which i add 2 snipers too. Some time i will attach the fo to the recon and some time too the mortors.

It seems I'm not the only one that is sitting there looking at these pre-made combo's and thinking, "I could do that better."
Why should I mess with that useless unit?

Just a tad off topic...

If you are playing USMC vs. Japan in the Campaign mode, I recommend you take a look at KG Erwin's 2/15/04 post, titled "My Idelaized USMC Core Force."

Good stuff and it plays very well.

Ray
