Hello Gentlemen -

I have been discussing with various people - and with mixed results - about the possibility of adding new tiles to the existing infantry SHPs. I don't know how you would go about it, programming or otherwise, but it would be cool if your AO unit's icon, instead of an understrength rifle squad, would appear as a group of guys standing around, reading maps, talking on radios, etc. Your pioneer/engineer boys, instead of another understrength rifle squad, would appear as some guys with flamethrowers, mine detectors, etc... you get the drift.

There are already motorcycles, bicycles, MG teams, AT teams, etc. why not add some more variety? David Boutwell's SP:Civil War project would benefit tremendously I think.

If that works, why not go an extra mile and create dozens, instead of just four, sets of infantry SHPs. Now you could have grey Blitzkrieg-era landsers, desert yellow Afrika Korps boys, Waffen-SS in Normandy with pea-dot uniforms, Falschirmjagers with splinter camo in the Ardennes, and they would all have the appropriate uniforms! Same thing for U.S. infantry.. Marines with dot camo, rolled-up sleeves, grunts with green/tan/brown uniforms.. the limits are almost endless it seems. (so would the required work though )

Do you think that these additions would complicate the game too much? Or are things fine the way they are?

Thanks,
Matt.

If such a thing is possible (and I suppose this depends most on the vagaries of the beautiful but aging machine that Spwaw is built upon ... ). Then it would be a fantastic addition to the game! Matt's work is excellent!

However, I get the impression that such a major overhaul so late in the game's development is an uphill task at best A finite number of graphic tiles seems to parallel the finite number of unit slots in OOB's etc ....

Pleez prove me wrong

Matt!

If it's feasible, it will NOT complicate the game. Your previous set of German & Allied infantry icons are already a MUST HAVE for everyone.

Dooo iiiit...

Jess!

I guess it's a plan then!

I'm working on Tamiya's M4 Sherman right now. I'll try to pick up some batteries for my digital camera so I can shoot you an in-progress photo. Basically all that's left is painting the extra stowage, .50-cal, and a few tools.

Nice to have fans!

Be cool, Jess.

Thanks,
Matt.

Hi Willy -

Well, from my involvement in the old days of SP:CW, it seems to me like the SP engine is not nearly as limited as the general consensus is - that is, if I understood a few certain higher-ups correctly.

When we asked for things like what I was talking about with future icons for WaW, such as an infantry icon changing appearances according to stance (ie. a routed squad appears with some guys wounded, throwing their hands up, white flags, a defending squad is people hunkered down behind trees, in prone positions, etc.), it was said, and I quote, but not exactly -

" Sure, we have the code, we can do it! "

From a recent correspondence -

" If this requires no coding, then I see no reason not to include it. These icons sound fantastic. If it does require a code change, then I would need to know how it should be done before I could get it to work. "

But of course, this was back in the days when Matrix was still getting off of the ground. I would imagine that some of this requires code work.

Right now I understand that Matrix is busy with many other money-making projects. Maybe someone can spare some time for this? I imagine it would only be a little tweaking to the code, and if my feeble mind's logic can suggest anything, it seems like a matter of copy and paste with what's already there, right?

I honestly believe that the SP engine is as finite as we want it to be. I also believe that we can create the most historical and realistic simulation as we want, if we want it bad enough. I've been looking in on some of the crap that's been thrown lately about the newest update. I wonder why SPCAMO doesn't have this problem when they release an update version of WW2 or MBT? Don't get me wrong, I love both games and SPCAMO and Matrix have great people, but it would be my dream if we could incorporate all the excellent features of SP:WaW with the realistic and historic accuracies of SP:WW2? (and I'm not alone in this sentiment). Why don't we try to outdo SP:WW2? After all, competition is what drives the market

I am in no way suggesting that we hack anybody's existing work, only that we take it as an example and use it to take SP:WaW to new heights. After all, isn't this what Matrix is about - the Glory in Gaming?

Thanks,
Matt.

By the way, in regards to the finite number of unit and SHP slots available, howcome the upcoming versions of SP:MBT and SP:WW2 have expanded ones? Why can't you do that with SP:WaW?

Thanks,
Matt.

By the way Jess -

A word of caution to all you wannabe M4 crews -

A prequisite to being one is owning a pair

Sherman said war is hell.. he must have had the M4 in mind when he said it!

Thanks,
Matt.

No Matt, Thank you!

Thank you for wanting to make SPWAW better.

Thank you for not settling for the status quo.

Thank you for your enthusiasm, it's contagious!

Matt,

Although I would love to see this, it is all but impossible, without coding changes. The infantry use totally different icon shape files, and the diminishing numbers of men shown all need to be coded in to work. I recently offered to enter the numbers in the icon data list to enable all the bad associations to be used, but the project is being rushed, and I'm not going to bother, after a week or more of no answers, then getting the word that it would need to be done by a very close date, no time, so sorry... I fear this infantry thing would never happen, since it would require a programmers time, and they are busy with other projects, too bad... You might take your offer up with SPCAMO though?

This is a far fetched question: What is the attitude towards third party programming? Is source code available? (This would also greatly help some questions about exact formulas).

Matrix has the source code, but THEY ARE UNABLE TO MAKE IT FREE SOURCE!!! This was their agreement with SSI. If someone knew how to hack it, and had a web page, and did some mods, I'm sure many would appreciate it.

Most hackers are to busy trying to screw us and just don't have the time for a project like this.

Your artwork is superb, Matt. You know that we have been sharing it for years. I've always been impressed with each piece you have shown me. Your talents just go on and on.

Please continue to add quality graphics to the game. We all appreciate it verymuch.
