how does this work. i looked through the index for the manual and didnt see it. i did a search of the last 45 days and didnt see much. just want to know the rules/mechanics of melee and what to expect to see. what units are better, what atributes aid in melee. thanks

It works much like an overrun. Move a personnel unit into the same hex as an enemy and press alt-M. A cautious advance (moving from adjacent) is usually better than a 2 or 3 hex run. Make sure you out number the enemy by at least 2 or 3 men. The computer yells Charge!/Banzai! there are grunts and howls, and you get a casualty count. I have found melees to be very risky. Keep in mind to saying about a knife in a gunfight.

I don't have the ultimate answer but here are some points: -If you move in from several hexes away, you will not have the MP to conduct a melee.
-The differential in suppression and experience seems to be more important than in the number of men.
-supress the target through lots of fire (at least 10 shots per turn) this is a good role for a platoon's MGs.
-supress all surrounding units so they don't attack your melee unit when it enters the enemy hex
-move adjecent to the target then the next turn move onto it (so you have enough MP to melee)
-a BIG disadvantage of melee is that if you don't kill all the enemy, there you are in there hex so you can't shoot at them or you will probably hit your own troops (you'll supress them for sure)
-banzai/berserk does not always happen, when it does according to Paul: Berserk/banzai It basically means they get an "extra die roll" to pass the pre-melee "gut check" and if you pass you get to attack before the defenders and they only attack back withthe remainder (rather than normal "simultaneous resolution". You still may fend it off...but chances are less. Hope this helps

Simple thing about melee : just forget about it ! You have to be in good state in the same hex of an enemy unit and with movvemetn point avaliable. You WILL take losses , more than the other time you will lost. All in all if I do manage to come adj or even in the same hex of an ennemy unit I will just fire at it and see it surrender ( except for FT of course ). Melee is a thing of the past, as the japanese/russian learn. If your opponent is deeply entrenched send ART then eventually close assault... a compagie charge with bayonnet usually only result in 10 squad dead.

well im going to have to try it just to hear the computer yell charge and all. doesnt your unit take opfire as it advances?? it does sound risky.
