(Guys, I had to restart the campaign after some late changes to the upcoming OOBs. My previous posting templates will be used for new reports. Note that this core force uses all 4280 points given to me in the default campaign setup, with true troop ON and rarity OFF.
C & C and mines are set to OFF. All other settings remain ON.)

Mission: Defend
Weather: Thunderstorm
Visibiliity : 1

My force is facing west on a 3000-yard front (60 hexes). The Japanese hit me with their scouts and tank-hunter teams- these are quickly dispatched, but my positions are spotted. By turn 10 I'm being pounded by mortars and off-board artillery. The Jap main force hits me soon after. There are Engineer Squads in the front ranks---these guys, when I can't suppress them, shred several of my frontline squads. When the Jap infantry closes in, I'm subjected to multiple banzai assaults-- I resort to close-range fire with my mortars to kill and suppress the human waves.

This is what playing this campaign was meant to be--it's brutal close-quarters mayhem, even though it's in the early stages. I have my engineers in the frontlines, using satchel charges and their few flamethrowers against the relentless assaults.

Thanks to the changes made by Stuart in Jap AI selections, even defend missions in the Pacific become a drama. No more easy target practice--the Japanese are extremely tough, and will suffer great losses, but they use off-board assets well, and offer a legitimate challenge in bad weather and close terrain. I'm thoroughly dreading the prospect of a full-scale amphib assault.

Nice setup of the battle with the Unit stats KG!
Not something I've seen before! It's like buying a program before the game starts.

I await further reports. Well done Mr. Moderator Man!

Thanks, JD. I'm using the Campaign Watcher program to keep track of my progress, and I exported my roster to a file. As you may have noticed, the unit commanders are all historical, with names drawn from various WWII Marine divisions and the Raiders/Paras.

Next report coming up...

I use Campaign Watcher as well. Never thought of using it in a AAR as a "guide" for the viewer as you did. I always print out my reports in CW, especially during battles in an MC! I'm starting to run out of space in my file cabinet drawer devoted to my grognard activities.

Keep 'em comming Gunny!

Snapshot, Tenaru, Turn 10:

As an example of the ferocity of this action, 15 Japanese jump into the position held by Morgan's G7 Squad. The five Marines are too stunned to react at all. Immediately behind, Piper's H7 MG opens fire but is destroyed. Roberts' 30 cal AAMG, which was just brought up, is also hit and only Roberts is left to man the gun. To Morgan's immediate left, Huff's F7 Squad fires on the Japanese, dispatching 9 of them but also wounding one of G7's survivors. In the entrenchment, four Marines are now face to face against six Japanese -- which side will recover and act first? The issue is in doubt...but I don't get a chance to find out.

Abruptly, on turn 11, the Japanese withdraw. The sudden disappearance of the enemy leaves me mystified, but in possession of the battlefield.

Result: Decisive Victory
USMC casualties: 130 men
Japanese casualties: 1044 men

Given the determination and vast numbers of the enemy, my first need is for more infantry and more firepower. I upgrade the Scout Teams to Recon Patrols, the 2nd Raider MG to 2nd Bn Raider Infantry, and 1, 3 & 4 Raider MGs to USMC Raiders armed with satchel charges. The A-D 60mm Mortars are replaced with 81mm Mortars, and the two 30 Cal AAMGs are replaced by 50 Cal M2s. Capt Stuart gets a new M3A1.

The upgrades will be needed, as my next mission is a full-scale assault. The Japanese that previously attacked me are now dug-in around a ridgeline south of Henderson Field.

Sergio, this is the long WWII campaign from the standard SPWaW install. You can choose one of six nations and play the whole war. I chose the USMC, and the force listing is customized using the World at War Game Editor (also in the standard install). The only difference in my current campaign is that I'm using the 8.2 USMC OOB, which I've also customized for my own use. The 8.2 patch should be available for public release within the next couple of weeks.

Well, Sergio, if you want a copy of my custom USMC OOB, e-mail me at gehiggin@hotmail.com , and I'd be happy to send it to you. One thing to remember, though--each time you start a long campaign, the locations/missions are different. I indulge in a bit of a cheat, though--I make sure that my first mission is either defend or delay. If it isn't, I just restart it until I draw the first mission I want. This is a good way to get a little experience bonus before you have to do a later advance or assault.

I kinda hate to complain at all since this is awsome, I'm really enjoying it, but...

Shouldn't this be in the AAR\DAR section?

Anyway, great job, can't wait for more updates.

Yes, you're right, but I'm indulging in my mod privileges to put this on "the front page". I wanted to illustrate two things--(1) the improvements in 8.2 with the OOBs and AI force selection and (2) the desperate nature of infantry close-combat in the Pacific, which was sometimes replayed in Vietnam and is occasionally seen once again with Marines vs Iraqi insurgents in today's headlines, terrain notwithstanding. I do this to balance out the prevalance of AARs dealing with armor battles. The USMC have always been at their best when the fighting gets up close and personal, but it can be costly and a test of endurance.

In this campaign, firepower is everything. The 60 & 81mm mortars are becoming the most valuable assets, and their quick response fire is essential to reduce my infantry losses in an assault or advance. The off-board 105s don't have the killing power of the 155s, but are more accurate. I will have 155s available in a later mission, but these are not weapons to be employed "danger-close" to your lines.

I will soon move this thread to the AAR section, where it properly belongs.
