I see that the movie "The 300 Spartans" (1962) is being released May 11, 2004 on DVD. I saw it a long time ago, so will be getting this one for sure (hey, who doesn't like to see some Greeks whupping it up at the Battle of Thermopylae).

Quote of the day:

In response to King Xerxes' demand that the Spartans throw down their swords or face death, the Spartan King Leonidas replied: "Come and take them. . ."

I find the 1960s was an era of the true epic: The 300 Spartans, Spartacus, The Fall of the Roman Empire, Cleopatra, Mutiny on the Bounty. . .

Why can't they make movies like that today. . .

Here is a review of the DvD version of "The 300 Spartans" movie:

The war between the Spartans and the Persians was epic, with immense battles and huge losses on both sides. The war, like any other conflict, had several key moments, events that turned the tide toward one side over the other. One such moment was the Battle of Thermopylae, which would impact not just this war, but the entire world. The battle was over a crucial mountain pass, one which the Persians needed to traverse. If Persian forces could make it through the pass, victory could be within reach. Persia's King Xerxes (David Farrar) is determined to crush the Spartans, so a win at this critical battle would be a serious boost. At the lead of the Spartans is Leonidas (Richard Egan), who is just as determined to hold the pass. He is unable to recruit the volume of soldiers he needs, but a stand must still be made. Leonidas refuses to back down and allow the Persians to take the pass, despite his small number of warriors. His band numbers about three hundred, while the Persian side boasts twenty times the manpower. Even in the face of such adversity, Leonidas and his men remain steadfast. The warnings from the Persians, which promise swift and lethal action, go unheeded by the Spartans. When the battle begins, can Leonidas and his men somehow manage to fend off the Persians?

Based on actual historic events, The 300 Spartans could perhaps best be summed up as an inspirational epic. If you take The Alamo and move the whole event to ancient Greece, then you've got The 300 Spartans, at least in a nutshell. A small, but determined force that stands up against a much larger force, that's the basic premise here. But unlike Disney's recent take on The Alamo, this movie manages to pull it all off and then some. If you've seen Gladiator, then you'll notice that numerous elements were lifted from The 300 Spartans, though in my opinion, this is the superior production. I can't argue about production values, as this movie has limited special effects and visuals, but the story and direction are terrific. Rudy Mate (The Violent Men, The Deep Six) supplies tight direction, even when his cast stumbles through the material. So if you had to pinpoint a weak area here, it would have to be the cast. The performances are mostly solid, but some folks seem wooden and that lessens the experience to an extent. A bigger budget could have deepened this epic also, but even so, The 300 Spartans is a worthwhile picture. Fox's disc isn't that great, but the movie itself is well recommended. And for fans, who have struggled to even track down copies in the past, this new release will be most welcome.

Why can't they make movies like that any more?

Ok, lack of good actors, or lack of interest in actors acting.

Reliance on special effects. Or what they tell are "special" effects

Insistance on having a woman get undressed at some point of the film.

Dependence on cheesy car chases.

Reality TV making the audiences disproportionally stupid through brain rot.

Yes there might be more reasons, but I think those cover the important reasons.

I agree Les.

In addition, it seems that current movies are dominated by "child" actors and are pandering to a young audience; while in the past, actors were adults, with movies geared for an adult audience. I have never appreciated older John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movies more, than after seeing some current movies released over the past couple of years.

I also think movie makers are being too politically correct: they almost seem to be afraid of displaying men in heroic movies. . .

Speaking of epics:

If anyone wishes to see Hollywood at its finest, and see Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor at their peak in acting ability, then look no further than the four hour epic Cleopatra (1963). It still is the most expensive movie ever made. Truly, an outstanding movie that follows history quite closely.

Les;

I really have to disagree with you here on many of your points.

Actors: There is no lack of good actors and actresses around today, I believe there are more today then there were 40 years ago. The problem, as always, is in the script and that Hollywood politics that go into what will and won't get made, same as always. Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett, and a host of others whose names escape me now are all capable of putting in first rate performances.

Special Effects: Yes, if the director tries to make the Special Effects a main character, the results can be disastrous (Anaconda anyone?) However, if they are used wisely and judiciously they can only serve to enhance the movie. I still remember getting the chills the first time I saw the Brontosauras, or whatever they're called now, on Jurassic Park.

Women Undressing: Ummm, this is a bad thing? OK, I kid. I understand what you mean, but most of the movies I've seen in the last few months have had very little of this. Did they have attractive women? Yes, same as Elizabeth Taylor was a knockout in the 60's. In this respect, I can see no change from years ago.

Car chases: Same as special effects, a car chase can't kill a movie, a CHEESY car chase can. For what it's worth, I absolutely love car chases if they're done right. Steve McQueen in Bullitt is just about the definitive car chase scene, despite the rest of the movie being rather mediocre. For my money though, when I want to see the BEST car drivers in the world, I try to catch a World Rally Cup race. What those guys do in real life Hollywood directors need big budgets to reproduce.

Reality TV: Ummm, no argument here.

Just me, opining away.

B

It could also be the type of actor that is present today. I agree that Brad Pitt can turn in a good performance (The Devil's Own).

But most movies today seem geared for the younger crowd.

One of the most under-rated actors of the past was John Wayne. After making 100 movies, he never earned an Academy Award. But watch one of his performances today, and you can really appreciate his part in a movie. He was effortless - he made acting look easy.

I never get tired of watching his movies. I especially liked him in The Alamo as Crocket. I know, it was a bit cheesy. But I still enjoyed it nontheless. . .

Most of "today's" good actors, are not "today's" good actors in my opinion, they are yesterday's actors, or put another way, they were already great when I was young :)

Problem is, a lot of yesterday's good actors are also now dead. Which sucks.

A lot of today's young actors are like a lot of today's young musicians. Raw.

Well, I bought the DvD version of The Last Samurai.

All I can say is the film is outstanding.

At 2 1/2 hours it ended far too quickly. The movie moves along nicely with its subject matter and is never boring. The director is Zwicks who did Glory.

The battle scenes are very authentic; there is no computer animation; the swordplay is the best I have seen on film; the period costumes are authentic down to the smallest detail; and there are solid and believable performances throughout the movie.

Cruise delivers a very good performance.

This is the type of film I could easily watch again.

This is not only a good movie; it is also a great look into the culture of Japan near the turn of the century; it examines the Samurai and the impact of its philosophy upon Japan; and it clearly foreshadows the coming Pacific conflict that would erupt in the Twentieth Century.

I would give the movie 9.2/10.

That's a strong endorsement hehe. I sometimes wonder if I am just being easily swayed, because I tend to enjoy low tech films predominantly.

Modern settings often please me less so.

Nice to hear someone come out strongly on the accuracy issue, I am usually to intent on just enjoying the film (I never take the magnifying glass approach to a film).

There are lots of good movies out there, but many of the them are not major Hollywood movies. Most of the good movies I see nowadays are independent films that I rent at the movie store. I recently saw "Ghostworld" and "You Can Count On Me" on DVD and they were far better than anything I've seen in the movie theater in the past several years.

You can still see the hand of Hollywood in a couple of scenes, but overall, an excellent film. I wish the film had been three hours long, rather than 2 1/2 hours long.

I understand that Cruise prepared for 8 months for this role and it shows. The swordplay is the best I have seen.

As to technical faults, I didn't see anything obvious (and I was watching - hehe). The scene with the Ninjas was hair-raising. . .

The movie at least helps to show us (especially as wargamers) the attitude of the Japanese military before it entered WWII.

The second disc contains a wealth of information about the film, its production, and about the Samurai. After viewing the two deleted scenes, I question their removal from the movie. They are both integral into understanding the movie better. Ahhhh, Political Correctness. . .

The Last Samurai along with The Sand Pebbles are two excellent films that are worth watching for anyone who wishes to see good story telling and to catch a glimpse of the far east.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Red Violin, Amelie, and Life is Beautiful are all marvelous films, IMO. Hollywood is good at making the fluffy entertainment movie, but generally speaking I would rather watch a foreign and/or independant flick. One exception to this rule is Charlize Theron's 'Monster', she fully deserved the Oscar for her performance.

BTW One more movie I've forgotten; Zulu (and yes, I know it's not very historically accurate).

I also agree with both of you :)

The smaller films often contain the biggest impact. I especially enjoy films that delve into character and story telling.

That is why I tend to prefer the older movies, which (to me personally) are still better than most current films. There are exceptions - Gettysburg, Glory, Last of the Mohicans, etc

I should also note that one of the truly great films, The Sand Pebbles, starring Steve McQueen (in one of his best performances) is being re-released on DVD in May:

I'm a fan of Blade Runner and Pulp Fiction - two unique movies - don't see enough of these. It is tough trying to find Pulp Fiction on DVD though.

And in Canada, A&B Sound has tons of DVD movies on sale, including Longest Day and A Bridge Too Far for only $10.00 each.

really pulp fiction hard to find ?

surprising, i bought a quite good dvd for only 4,99€ before 2 weeks !

Some updated info regarding the LoTR: The Return of the King:

The version coming out at the end of this month will be the theatrical release. However, the extended version will be available in November and will have 49 MORE minutes added to the movie, making it over 4 hours in length.

IMO, after seeing the extended versions of the first two parts (which add so much more to the movies), I am going to wait to buy the extended version of the third part. Definitely worth waiting for.

I liked the theatrical release of The Fellowship of the Ring
I liked the extended version much more
I thought the theatrical release of The Two Towers was pretty good
I LOVED the extended version.
I very much enjoyed the theatrical release of Return of the King.

As you can see, there is a trend here, one that I hope continues because as a Tolkien fan, there are a bunch of little things I would like to see cleared up in the Extended version.

It seems that they are milking the LOTR trilogy to the maximum.

What a scam/goldmine.I mean all the movies were quality movies and did justice to the books.

But wow, this has to be the biggest merchandise seller sense star wars.

I have the theatrical and extended versions of the first two and will end up with both of the third movie.

Regardless of WHAT the film is, I always seek to get it the cheapest way possible.

Lord of the Rings has been the only exception ever in my entire life.

I have the extended versions of both the first two.
But for those that have not actually bought them, the point is not really there if you are not interested in 2 full dvds worth of "stuff" about the making of the films.

The extended versions have 4 disks, but only 2 are the films. And really, you are not really getting much "more" movie by buying these ultra purchases.
If you only want the movie, you might just as well stick with the mid price extended option.

You have to be a complete fanatic (like me :) ) to want to get the mega purchase.

I am just glad I read the books first.

And yes, they sure have milked this thing, but at least it is the finest smoothest grade of milk I have ever experienced heheh.

Now contrast this with the 35 dollar release of Windtalkers. God what a crock. Not worth 35 cents.

LoTR:

I am big fan of the movie series. I find the extra film added to the movies really adds a great deal IMO. I just finished watching the extended versions of parts one and two this week. For example, in part two, the director added 43 extra minutes of film. This was not just tacked on, but was skillfully interwoven throughout the movie. While the theatrical release concentrated less on the main characters, the extended version added many more scenes with the main characters, thus balancing the movie out.

Those extra bits that were added helped flesh out the characters and gave you much more of what you liked. After seeing the extended versions, I could never go back to the plain vanilla versions. So I will wait for the extended version of part three when it comes out.

I haven't seen Waterloo on dvd in the stores, but I did find The Blue Max, and it was only $13.00 - heheh. It's been digitly re-mastered. Nothing like seeing WWI aerial combat. . .

I guess I'm kind of a throw back to yesteryear - heheh

I'm going to get the restored version of The Sand Pebbles when it comes out on May 25.

Steve McQueen's greatest performance in a great film.

You and I would likely like the same sort of film Von Rom.

Most of what I want on dvd is hardly new film.

And yes Sand Pebbles was a good film.

Ever seen Cast a Giant Shadow?

I should also note that one of the truly great films, The Sand Pebbles, starring Steve McQueen (in one of his best performances) is being re-released on DVD in May:

Von Rom, thanks to your recommendation, I got a copy of this from the local library. I wasn't aware that this film was nominated for 9 Academy Awards in 1966. It was beaten out for "Best Picture" by "A Man For All Seasons".

You and I would likely like the same sort of film Von Rom.

Most of what I want on dvd is hardly new film.

And yes Sand Pebbles was a good film.

Ever seen Cast a Giant Shadow?

When all the "older" films come out on DvD I can usually pick them very cheaply, while everyone else is buying the new stuff (but not really worth much IMHO) at higher prices - heheh.

Yes, I saw Cast a Giant Shadow - good film.

To compare films: I prefer the 1960 version of The Alamo (with John Wayne) vs the new one that's out. To some people that older version might appear to be a bit dated and hokey. But as a film it had respect and it played up the heroic virtues. . .

Braveheart (to Mel Gibson's credit) also was a film that had respect and character and substance. It had all the ingredients that I look for in a film, and that I consider to be worthy of adding to my video collection.

Same as Last of the Mohicans - one of the truly great modern films. It was almost like watching literature on film. . .

I always run into pleople who have never seen many of these films. . . They don't know what they are missing. . .

That's probably why I like the extended versions of the LoTR, because the additional footage was centered around the characters and the feelings they had each other.
