Status: offline 		Sitting in my closet I have this mammoth box containing a Board Wargame from 1985 called..."Pacific War: The Struggle Against Japan 1941-1945." Individual Capital Ships, air groups, divisions/battalions. 100 Miles Per Hex. Monthly Turns, daily movement.

I was wondering if this 1980s board wargame was the inspiration for the current computer version? Or an inspiration for the first PC Pacific War Game of the 1990s??

I remember I never actually played the Board Version. It was an administrative monster!! But hey! Now we have the computer to handle all the administrivia..

I'd say the original pacwar was the inspiration, or rather this WITP is what what Grigsby would have liked to have done 12 years ago. Pacwar went through two major re-designs and at one point was more similar to WITP, though the 640k limitation at the time and much smaller computers obviously limited things.
I have the victory game you are talking about but really if any board game is similar to WITP it's SPI's game that came out in 1977, called WITP. Had 7 maps, several thousand counters, etc. Made the victory game look small. Wish I had kept them (had two games for extra counters.)

Status: offline 		I played the board version. Solitaire unfortunately. I recall it was a big pain in the ass with activation points for Japanese units or something like that.

Status: offline 		I still have it. Played the Wake Island Relief scenario, loved it, but could not find another bud to play it after Frank (PacWar buddy) got posted elsewhere. Late teens in between dates is a very small window to get serious gaming in.

If the original Pacific War game had the same ground force look as War in Russia, with separate land combat units and a hex playing grid, that would have been the ultimate game of the 90’s.

Oh LORDY! Tell me something I don't know. I have a copy of the game myself in near mint condition. I have a lil hellion of a cat that would just LOVE to chew up all the lil cardboard counters. Considering the fact that the game is worth a little money now (75-150 bucks to a collector I THINK), I want to save it... But let me tell ya despite the advent of WiTP, I get tempted to play it...

And I happen to have a the Strategic Scenario for "Pacific War" set up in my (home) office right now.

Status: offline 		That scan does bring back memories! Does anyone remember Pear Harbor, I think it was published by GDW? Also AH's Pacific version of Third Reich, Rising Sun I beleive? Many, many a day, week, month was spent playing these. I am so glad that WITP has been done, it seems that only the European Theater gets any treatment these days! Thanks Matrix and 2by3 for keeping us Pac Rats happy!

We had a *bump* rule for that very reason. Used to be a standard tactic when you were doing poorly.

Status: offline 		We always mounted the map on a piece of steel bolted top the wall and put the counters in those magnetic counter clips; we had thousands of the things....if a big stack would happen to fall from near the top of the map though, it could take an entire front down with it.

Well, my wife has two cats, both of them love to play Godzilla with my gaming table. But then again, my wife likes watching the History Channel, and I think she actually enjoyed Band of Brothers more than I did, so how cool is that...?!

What mean you by "we?"

Every Friday evening more or less for the last 5 years.

Pacific War (VG) was one that we never had the patience to try to learn, although the detailed action made it seem as though it might be worth it. We played A3R (AH), Totaler Krieg (Decision, it's quite good), Pacific Battles Vol 1: "Rising Sun" (Decision, it sucks), AWAW (GMT, like A3R on steroids), Flat Top (AH), Bismarck (AH), WW2PTO (SPI/TSR, pretty good game), and Korea (VG). Also, ASL about 1 Saturday per month.
