I wonder if the Mine Warfare TF has to be CREATED at a size 9 port (or with MLE) to make it work...

It shouldn't....I thought that was only for reloading the mines! The mines are already aboard so it should work......

I created three Mine TFs from the Dutch MLs and mined Palembang, Balikpapan, and Kuching. Then I sent all of them to Sidney to wait for a better day. No problems.

I also set up Oglala at PH and have shuttled her to Midway, Johnston and Palmyra returning to PH each time to reload. Again no problems.

Hi, make sure you're assigning the Mine Laying TF a destination hex. I've used ML's quite a bit already and they've been laying plenty of mines for my good friends to play with!

What's the TF's destination hex and what is it's home base port?

I'd rather not say as its in a PBEM, but they are the same... Could this be the problem ?

Probably.

Since I normally send TFs from one base to mine another, I can't say whether you should be able to mine the same hex that you both start in and also have as your home base.

However, if you want to be sure of laying the minefield, set the TFs home base to a different nearby "friendly" port and the TF will lay the minefield in its destination hex (where it starts) and then retire toward its new home base.

You'll obviously need to then bring it back if you want to keep it at the original port but at least it'll have laid the mines.

Cheers

I have mixed results. Sometimes they lay mines, other times they don't. Same in UV. Never did completely figure it all out....

Is it possible that they're mining and you just don't know it? The only symbol is that little dot in the upper left corner of the hex. Unless the minefield is in a base hex, I haven't figured out a way to see how many mines are in the field.

I've not had problems with mining - other than the extreme drive down to Sydney for refills. Wouldn't be so bad except the Dutch seem to have 10 gallon fuel tanks.

Its at a base hex and I keep checking each turn to see if there are any mines and there are not.

Same here but I am not optimistic about this as it hasn't worked in multiple iterations yet. I have sent the MLs to other locations from their base (where they had mines on board already) and they have yet to drop a mine in the water despite reaching their destination! I will try it all sorts of ways and see what happens and post back here if by some miracle the mines start floating!

Form Mine Warfare TF.

Place ML in it.

Give it a destination that is not where it is.

Make sure it is set to Retire.

Poof, mines laid.

So I can send it out a hex.. and then next turn send it back to its starting base and it will mine it ?

Yep, just make sure it's Do not Retire on the way or it will dump it's mines there instead

OK... BTW, does it dump all of its mines in one sweep ?

I've already seen the Japanese hit mines at both Rabaul and in Hong Kong (a minesweeper hit one in Hong Kong - HAR!). Any idea what kind of density you would need to maintain before you actually stand a legitimate chance of having something hit? My math was so far off on supply ("Oh, sure. You'll have convoys of 700,000 supply all the time") that I'm afraid I off the mark by a factor of 10 or 100.

You know, I've got another question. I lost a DD to unknown causes, which I'm guessing might have been a mine (or sub). So this made me wonder about submarine mining around PH. How would I know if there are any just waiting for the lovely Lady Lex? I assume that the hex won't show a mine symbol until the field is discovered. Can it be found by, say, recon or ASW search? Or does one only find it when a ship goes Kablooey? If you send a minesweeper out on do not retire for a series of hexes, will it spot minefields?
