I had a light cruiser finally sink many days after being savaged by
Vildebeasts. The CL was in port at a dock in Cambodia and the sinking
still killed the captain. Shouldn't rescues be fairly easy when a ship sinks while docked in a port?

I remember in UV, personnel could be rescued even at sea in the aftermath of an attack. How does the rescue routine work in port when
there is no attack in WitP? I wonder?

Im not sure but I had some boys floundering in the water at a port and they got rescued.

is it automatic if other TF's are around?

As long as it is theoretically possible to rescue a few, I don't care if any particular captain goes down with his ship.

I did think he was a spunky guy for suffering the Vildebeast bombs and still getting back to Cambodia....but the swimming to Cambodia coda on his career evidently did not pan out.

Consider it the naval version of Hara Kiri.

whether in port, or at sea, the rule is the same, if a ship sinks there's a 50% chance of the captain being killed.

If you 'scuttle' the ship instead, you save the captain and a few VP's as well

Why? If the ship is basically a beat up hulk waiting for repair and was that close to sinking, why would the captain, or anybody else for that matter, even be onboard?

We could ask him. But he's dead.

Maybe he was down in the engine room helping bail water when all hell broke loose!

Seriously though, it doesn't really make sense that if a ship is docked and unsalvageable that you would have your captain on board trying to put out a fire. He'd most likely be back at the officer's club bragging about the 50 torpedo bombers they laid out before limping back to port.

It does make sense though that a few crewmen or support personell might be on board in a last ditch attempt to save it. Of course from a game point of view, it simply gives you yet another critical decision point:

Do I try to save this thing and risk losing more points and a good captain or do I scuttle it and avoid the problem.

Maybe the best solution is to relieve your captain and replace him with your lowest rated 'expendable' captain. Then if the ship recovers, swap them back and if not, sorry pal, I guess you should have studied a little harder at the Accademy!

Funny. Maybe his possibly going down with the ship isn't a total loss, I mean you could switch him out with the worst commander.

it wasnt a conciencious decision, thats just how the rule operates. Every exception to a general rule requires coding and coding time. As it stands right now, the code doesnt differentiate between a ship being in port or at sea. its currently up to the player to monitor the status of his damaged ships. if your concrned over the welfare of a favorite or valuable captain/adm, u should xfr them off the ship (or scuttle)

I have this image from the Pirates of the Carribean movie. Stepping off the mast onto the dock.

Move to Pearl Harbor: Captain, the ship just sank.
What?
The ship sank.
Shouldn't we be drowning then?
Well, we are in port.
Ah, that helps then. Send for a boat to take us off.
Sorry, sir, USN regulations prevent sending a boat to a sunken ship.
Why?
Because it would be under water, sir.
What about survivors?
Well, sir, they would be in the water. Regs allow us to rescue people in the water, sir. Downright encourage it sir.
So, we can't get a boat sent to us because we have sunk, but since we are in port we are really only nestled in the mud. But, if we jump into the water, then they will send a boat to get us to the dock?
Yes, sir. Uh, sir. You can't jump in the water, sir. You have to go down with the ship, sir.
I already have.
I understand sir, but the Navy Department...
Where did I put the Holy Handgrenade of Antioch?
Run away, run away.

(Thank you. I'll be here all week.)
