Well you are wrong It will be many days before I reveal any CVs, but you probably already know where they are so it doesn't matter. Speaking of which, how are your air defenses around PH ? I know your ASW is a little weak.. maybe your air defenses are too....

Well its been 2 days and quite a bit has happened on the sea. Rob's raid at Amboina was a success for him, netting 3 ships so far - 1 AP, 1 AK and 1 DD with several others mauled beyond belief.. Once they make port, they will probably just be scrapped.. No time to repair 90+ sys damage. In retaliation for the raid on Amboina, I have bombarded Pontianak and Palembang. At Pontianak I killed 3 PT boats that were in my way and bombed the base - maybe killing a couple planes - but about 100 men too. One of my ships took some damage, but not enough to worry about.. Then on to Palembang where I saw at least 2 TFs in port.. So I showed up and beat them badly - all AKs... I sunk 3 or 4 and beat the others up so bad they fled. The only nice thing about that was that I killed 100+ men on one of the AKs - so is Rob bringing men in ? Or taking them out ? I think I know which...

I have also taken Sandakan base (on Borneo) last turn and both San Marcelino (PI) and Moulmein this turn. ROb has some units just to the north of Moulmein, so I wonder if he wants to play ?

OH yeah the big news... The siege of Singapore has begun and it should not be long... Rob has pulled a few units out of the area (thats why he has so many units in Burma) and in my first attack I lost 1300 to his 1000, plus lowering the fort.. I'll probably be killing a bunch of Indian Brigades and BFs in Singapore and within a week of that fortress falling, so will Java.. I'm just waiting...

1. Mines. I have a love hate relationship with them. I love to deploy them but it is a pain to do so. That being said he now must move slower MSWs prior to striking anywhere. What ever it takes to slow him down is good. So I will continue to make use of my minelayers.

2. ASW. Im sure I have hammered his submarines rentlessly, but the number of destroyers I have lost in the campaign to his submarines is surprising. Not sure what is happening there. I will likely spend the next month or so replacing weaker captains to see if that helps. I have been operating my submarines in 3 ship desrons and earlier that has probed effective, but lately I'm not sure.

3. If you can, do. Once again I followed this and once again it netted big results. I will continue to probe and prod the Xargun empire...everywhere I see weakness i will take advantage of it.

4. Philippines. Surprisingly they have held. I think its more to do with his lack of troops in the field then my ground prowess. I expect the Philippines to hold until march.

5. Malaya. After two months of war Xargun is on to me. I spent the lives of a lot of good British sailors not resupplying Singapore, but rather depopulating it. All those merchants he saw going into Singapore where empty or near empty. I grabbed as many combat units as i could and left some lighter units to hold the deception. It has more then worked. He slowly but surely built up an army of close to 100K in combat troops to hammer his way into Fortress Singapore and is just now discovering how hollow that shell is. In the meantime the forces I saved there are now operating in the field of Burma prepared to drive the Xargun horde back to China. Singapore falls, there is no preventing that. My decision to evacuate as many troops as I could has tied up thousands of his while allowing my forces to fight another day.

6. American Subs. I am now operating them in pairs and trios to see if they will be more effective. So far, they have been :) a bit more and my sub losses have been lighter.

7. Tripwires. I expect a knife fight in Rangoon soon now that he is finishing off Singapore. Lanchow should be a blood bath though realistically I cannot hold there. China is my bane, my interest level in that land is more then limited so its hard to retain focus. That being said I'm in a real danger of losing there and losing badly. I believe he has stumbled across 2 more areas I have been building up. One of them should be no big deal. I have high hopes he beats his head against the wall I have built at the other. Time will tell.

8. Patience. I still struggle with this. Build build build is very hard when you want to strike. My attack on his port was part of my impatience. Im getting very tired of being kicked in the teeth every turn :D. That being said I can now match him with carrier strength if he is doing what I believe he is doing. Its just a matter of time before we will become embroiled.

9. The Dutch. Have been fun to play. Their air remains pretty useless (though they have claimed a number of hits) thier subs are awesome. Overall as the allied player don't overlook those harrassment attacks with them. They will slow the Japanese down and that is your main goal.

10. Supply. After 7 weeks I feel like all my tripwire areas are built up to the point where troops in the field can defend theirselves and be well supplied. I have a number of bases very very built up now. I dont really fear attack anywhere anymore even with his carrier advantage, because when they are done expending they have to go home. And as soon as they attack he can expect me to respond where they aren't.

Status: offline 		American Naval Forces Maul Japs Off Dutch Harbor

(Reuters Anchorage) US Naval forces surprised a small Japanese task force off Dutch Harbor overnight. 2 US Destroyers attacked the enemy units as they were preparing to bombard Dutch Harbor, no doubt softening up the US territory for possible invasion. Local on scene commanders say they sank one Japanese Destroyer out right and expect the other 2 to have issues on their return voyage home. It is unknown whether or not the Japanese will follow through with the expected invasion, but American commanders told this reporter that "We have plenty of force in Alaska to deal with any enemy threat."

Status: offline 		Well its been a couple more days and more ships sink to the bottom of the ocean. In the past 2 days I have sunk 5 AKs and 2 APs. In return I have lost a single MSW - damn dutch and their lucky 500 lb bombs..

Rob is definately in love with mines as I found some at Truk and am cleaning them out right now.. Mines are kinda like cockroaches... As soon as you see one, you know you have lots of hidden ones... And only a good, thorough cleaning will work.

I have captured Wasile base (don't know island name) but it is marked Weda on the map. This controls the island for me.. I have also destroyed what I think is the last allied forces on Mindanao - forcing the PI units to finally surrender. ONly the base on the far left edge of the island is allied control and I do not believe there are any troops in it.. So a quick grab and the island is secure.

Other than that not much has been happening.. Just bombing Clark and Singapore with lots of bombers and slowly attacking Singapore with men to weaken the fort and force surrender sooner.. I plan on marching into Clark Field in a few days once my men have had a chance to recover some losses they have suffered in the PI campaign. Unfortunately I think Rob is right about the PI - probably will hold til March due to my understaffing of the attack force. Oh well... Nothing I can do about it now.

I have roughly 6 major ops in the hamper right now - although Artic Blizzard has failed. Rob caught wind of it via Intel (SigInt) the day before I struck and he beat the hell out of my small DD TF sent to bombard Dutch Harbor. I still can't believe it.. It was night and the US DDs pounded on my ships.. Must be that stupid radar. The survivors have fled the battle with major flooding problems and are not expected to make it back to port - expecially at 1 hex per day. The Invasion force has turned back and should make port in a day or two.

I am anxiously awaiting Rob's Operation Burning Steel (I think) and wonder what it is. Too bad my subs have been popping his ships all over the place. I got an AK off Lunga in the past turn and notice he now has actual troops on that base.. Hmmm.. Time to free up a division and say hi I think.

My newest Operation Hornet's Nest should go off in a few days as the forces are already in motion. Now if they can just arrive undetected it should prove to be a big payoff for me.

Well should have some more AARs for you guys soon.

Status: offline 		Well its Feb 4th and the war is slow one day and happening the next. Thanks to poor intel (once again) I sent a small surface TF to deal with some Allied Merchies and PTs I spotted.. Upon showing up, they ran into 2 Allied cruisers escorting the Merchies... In a long drawn out battle, the cruisers sunk 3 of my warships and crippled the fourth. I lost 1 CL and 2 DDs in the battle in which the majority of my return shells bounced off allied armor - very disappointing..

I captured my first base on American Soil - Kiska Island in the Aleutians... Since I couldn't have Dutch Harbor, I took a small base on the way home.. By the time Rob can react, I'll have the landing force loaded back up and far away. A little payback for the sinking of my DD TF - not an even exchange by far, but better than nothing..

I also captured Jesselton - securing the North shore of Borneo completely now since I took Miri last turn. Miri was a nice easy battle in which I drove an allied BF into the Borneo wastelands and captured over 20,000 oil... I am also having trouble loading all the oil from Brunei as its a smaller port (size 3 or 4) and I can't load the oil fast enough to make a dent in the stockpile there. I have already hauled 20,000+ oil out of there and there is another 40,000+ still there. I like this production...

In the past 2 turns I have sunk 2 Allied AKs - one carrying members of the 2nd USMC. I have all but sunk a TK off the coast of Palembang.. Hopefully he was heading into port to pick up oil and not out with a full load... In return I have lost the last DDs from the ill fated Dutch Harbor attack as well as another MSW blown apart by enemy subs.

I am suffering more and more ship damage as the war continues and I just hope the round of repair yard expansion I did a while back will be enough to cope with the new influx of ships... I currently have a good mix of merchies, DDs and Subs heading to / or currently in repair ports - I believe roughly half of my remaining submarine force is damaged to some extent that prevents use.

At Midway another day goes by with my sub firing a six-pack of torps at the Allied DD Cassin. Once more all torps miss - this must be the luckiest DD in the allied fleet. I have fired all 18 of my torps at this one DD and havn't hit him yet.. If I were Rob, I'd promote the captain to a bigger ship - not an ASW escort though as he hasn't hit my sub either...

Status: offline 		Well here some things I have learned in the past month (and a couple days into Feb)...

1. I am WAAAY behind schedule everywhere... My delay of not understanding the effects of Malaria on my troops have cost me at least 2 weeks in PI and Malaya. Only in China am I ahead of schedule - with only like 6 chinese bases left total.

2. The Burma Question / Problem
Rob has a lot of units in Burma - mostly in the Rangoon area. Until Singapore falls I don't have the divisions to break through easily. Do I sit and wait for more men, attack and hope for a lucky break... I am not sure.. Being how my Naval forces are taking a beating, I may wait for more men before attacking Rangoon - use the time to get replacements into my units.

3. China
Can I take the major CHinese bases ? I am going to take Lanchow and the base to the NW of it - its just a matter of time. I have a lot of units all over the place chasing down and attempting to destroy cutoff chinese units. Once they are done, I will have a clean line of attack to 3 chinese bases. If I can smash China hard enough, I can invade Burma from the east and force Rob into defending two sides - which I don't think he has the troops to do - at least not yet.

4. Naval Losses
My Naval losses have been much higher than they should be. I have cast away roughly 6 DDs and several CLs all for no real gain - and almost all due to faulty Intel. One - my attack on Dutch Harbor was thwarted by lucky SigInt of Robs - as I'm quite sure no planes were flying in the blizzard conditions of the north pacific.

5. Weather Affects
The weather is currently helping Rob quite a bit by grounding most of my aircraft in the PI and Malaya for nearly a week. This lack of bombing has given his men in Singapore and the PI a week more of life at least. The bad weather is hurting me all over, as my planes simply do not fly and bomb targets assigned as well as of opportunity - ships...

6. Supplies & Fuel
My fuel level is still very high overall with most Homeland bases over 50,000 units... As well as my major frontline bases in the same ballpark.. I have broken out of my supply slump from my early expansion efforts and now several bases in Japan have 20,000+ upplies once more and its only increasing..

7. Oil & Resources
My stockpiles of Oil and Resoures are going good. I have captured enough oil in china to feed most of my HI in china - especially once I get Lanchow and its oil. Resources are all over the place in large numbers. I have delivered large shipments to Formosa and Sahkalin island to keep the industry in those places going strong. With Brunei (and now Miri) under control I will be shipping oil home soon..

8. Industry
I have overcome my lack of HI of a week or more ago and my HI pool is steadily increasing. I have halted production in several of my armament factories - this has given me my surplus. All in all, my Armament pool is nearly 9000 and maintains itself despite halting production in several factories.

9. Reserves
My reserves of men and equipment is increasing each turn, as is my aircraft stockpile. Losses have been heaviest in Zeros, Nells and Betties - with Zeros taking the most losses.. I still have several Claude air groups that I haven't upgraded yet. But I have been establishing a 50-rule for Zeros.. I am attempting to maintain a pool of at least 50 zeros before I allow any upgrades or major replacements. Sofar this is working for me. I want to save that many planes for when my CV airgroups get into another battle - which will probably be soon.

10. Flood of Land units
I still have a good 10 units sitting on the Homeland that I can ship off without any PP payment. Most of them are BFs and I simply have no where to send them. I have 6 or more BFs enroute to my front areas right now - and barely have places for all of them, and am not sure what to do with the extras I have and keep getting.. Once I expand again and capture more islands, I'm sure I'll have places for them, but for now they are simply getting filled up to 100% size for better use..

11. Mines
They are a pain.. I have only lost 1 PC to mines (at Wake) but they are getting to be a real pain. Not a real threat, but more of a nuisance. The few mines that I have left have accomplished nothing that I know off and are so far away, I will probably not conduct another round of mining - at least until I get my MLEs built and distributed - 4 months away.

12. Subs
In december and early Jan I had very good success against Rob's subs but it has fallen off lately with my ASW doing very poorly against his subs so far - I think I have damaged 2 of his subs in the past 2-3 weeks. My ASW is undergoing reorganization which I hope will
improve my success rate... but who knows..

Status: offline 		AUSSIES SAVAGE JAP RAIDERS OFF PONTIANAK!

ABDA Command is reporting an Allied naval victory in the contested waters of off Pontianak. A Japanese force of 2 destroyers and 2 cruisers attacked a merchant convey passing through the area. 2 unnamed Australian Cruisers responded to the merchant's SOS and sank three of the four Japanese warships. An unnamed Admiral was reported as saying, we have driven these pirates from the north home, but mark my words they will be back with heavier units.


AIR RAID DARWIN

Japanese Air Forces attacked the port today causing some damage and light injuries to some of the personnel station there. The Japs were met in the sky by the American 24th Pursuit group recently transfered here from the Philippines. The commanding officer of the airmen said with glee," After 2 months of hell it was nice to get our licks in against the Japanese."

Status: offline 		WOW !! Probably the most exciting turn in a couple weeks - since our CV battle near Wake.. Kinda funny.. CV battle at Wake in January... now in early Feb another CV Battle north of Midway.. Yep.. We just had our Midway - although with much fewer CVs on both sides... Rob had 2 (Yorktown and Enterprise) and I have 2 (at least visible: Akagai and Hiryu). I was streaming at full speed about 600 miles north of Midway on my way to my checkpoint when out of nowhere comes Rob's TF on react. He saw me last turn with intel and decided to act on a hunch... I bet he's sorry now...

What started out as a planned raid against allied ships near Midway turned into a bloody battle between CVs. For turns I have seen at least 1 DD at Midway trading shots with my subs and I couldn't kill it - so I decided to use my CVs that were hanging around... And this is what happened.

Well the damn Allies with their radar launched the first two attacks and despite my Zeros getting a lot of kills, they broke through with something like 50 bombers in the first wave. Luckily most of the hits reports either bounced off armor or were lies... The second wave was much smaller and did about the same. Then my return fire... His fighters killed / damaged a lot of planes in my return attacks, but the Enterprise is crippled and the Yorktown hurt. The PM phase came with only a minor attack from the Yorktown - Enterprise has too much damage to fly planes (YEAH !!!). The bombers get through and get a couple hits, but my return attack cannot find the Enterprise anywhere (Sunk, but not reported or just a cripple ?) so they hit 2 BBs and the Yorktown.
Luckily I planned this far enough away from Midway that no land-based bombers can join in the fun as the attacks have savaged both air groups. I should have enough planes left to launch at least 1 more good attack that should sink the Yorktown too... My damn Vals keep bombing the BBs instead of targets they could damage - I don't know how many of the hits failed to pentrate the BB armor.. But several bomb hits on Yorktown ripped through her deck and exploded inside.

With a little bit of luck I will be able to kill both the Enterprise and the Yorktown this next turn.. If Rob runs, he'll have to leave the Enterprise behind most likely and it'll be an easy kill... My ships have little to no damage (AA strength at 100%) and my two CVs have minor damage with some fires and flooding - but its all under control and I can still launch planes - big advantage.. I have at least 2 CVs launching strikes against Rob's one. If I hurt the Yorktown bad enough he will probably stay and fight - since it can't get away... Even if he runs and the Enterprise escapes I have still won a major victory at sea against his CVs again...

On top of that I sunk 2 allied subs this turn as well - in fact they were the only ships sunk this turn. I expect to see the Enterprise sink in the next turn and a BB or 2 depending on how bad they are hit.. He is a long way from a decent port and if he runs to Midway, it will make my job easier - I love my subs....

In Malaya the singapore fort is crumpling as my men attack again - this time a fort level is lost AND the allies take heavier casualties.. The end for singapore is drawing closer and closer.

In china a general round of bombardments by both chinese and japanese troops net mostly dead chinese.

Air strikes around the area are proving less effective as losses mount for both sides.

American naval forces surprised a Japanese raider task force north of Midway this afternoon. US naval officials say their pilots reported heavily damaging 2 enemy carriers, 2 battleships and sinking a destroyer. CINCPAC says they got wind of an impending Japanese attack on the central Pacific atoll 3 days ago thanks to the efforts of sigint and where able to counter the enemy's movements. Both sides spent the afternoon exchange blows from aircraft in the 2nd carrier battle of the war. Admiral Roberson, Commander-in-Chief Allied Forces Pacific reportedly said, "This counterstrike falls in line with our basic policy, if we catch the enemy we will strike him hard and fast. We can afford to take losses far easier then he can." Both American Carriers reported some damage, but Cincafp says he expect both ships to return sometime this weekend.

ALLIES LAND AT ANDAMAN ISLAND

Commonwealth forces made an armed landing yesterday morning at the island located in the Bay of Bengal. The small island had fallen to Japanese forces in the week prior and British commanders were determined to get it back. Thus far there has been no Japanese response to yesterday's landing and on scene commanders expect to have control of the entire island by week's end.

SINGAPORE HOLDS ON

Despite 2 months of bombing, shelling and starvation Commonwealth forces continue to fend off the Japanese at the island fortress. More then 100 thousand Japense soldiers continue to lob shells in at the defenders who bravely continue to hold the line.

2nd DAY OF BOMBING AT DARWIN

Japanese bombers struck the northern enclave for a second day with a small wave of bombers that did little to no damage. American B-17 bombers had are left the area for the day on the way to their strike against the enemy base at Amboina.

AMERICANS DRIVE JAPS BACK AT CLARK

After heavy fighting American commanders in the Philippines reportedly saw at least 3 divisions of Japense retreating. It's unknown if the Japense were reorganizing their lines or having to pull back thanks to successive days and nights of artillary duels with American and Phillipine troops.

He did.. I think 2 hexes... He's probably using B-17s or PBYs on Midway to track my fleet and used that info to home in on them.. I didn't spot him at all.. Range 4-5 planes suck at scouting. Wish my Zeros could scout - range 11 would make a nice scout plane.

One of those things i dont get...I have caught you flatfooted twice...and both times I come away with unhappy results. You didnt see me either time until my bombers where diving on you yet your carriers seem to escape with limited damage and I get hammered. Seems like to me if a naval force gets surprised :)...well you get the idea :). I have been tracking that fleet for a while, to me both attacks should of been slam dunks. Ah well live and learn I guess.

I don't know either, but I am glad of the results. What is the experience of those air crews ? Not 100% on mine, but most of my CV groups are 80+ and either you are hitting me with duds or your pilots lie alot more. I will admit that the Hiryu came into battle damaged from our previous encounter and did not suffer much damage in this battle compared to the last one.. Not sure how or why, but I'm glad. The BBs you hit have suffered basically no damage nor gun losses, although both CVs have numerous guns knocked out. I was too scared to watch the actual battle and just looked at the results... so I don't know if you were dropping 500 lbers or 1000 lbers - my guess is 500 lbers from the lack of damage.

ouch... and my CVs survived ? I remember in PacWar a CV would be sunk from 2 or so hits from 1000 lbers...

Must be the FOW working then... Take a look at the experience of your units and let me know.. If its low (below 70) that may be part of the problem.. I know my units below 70 do not perform nearly as well as those above.

Even in mid 1943 I just ran into 4 Jap CV's, vs 3 CV's, a CVL and 3 CVE's.

Since the Jap CV's hadn't really faught anything since the start of the game, and my fighter pilots had not taken many shots against enemy aircraft I had lower experience (low 70's).

When the dust settled 3 Jap CV's had sunk, the fourth I lost track of, one of my CVE's had sunk, 70%+ of my fighters were missing and every ship in my taskforce had been hit with something!

Given that and the fact that your battle was more evenly matched in terms of CV numbers I'm not really surprised at the result.

Great AAR so far too, keep it up ;)

Pilot experience is very likely the key, but there is one other thing. IMHO the USN is not ready for carrier-to-carrier combat until all F4F-3's have been replaced with the F4F-4 model. The -4's have six guns instead of four, and even more important have folding wings allowing half again as many fighters to fit in the hangars.

I come into work, get my Starbusks coffie, Wall Street J., and then I turn to this AAR, and see how the war is going.
I have learned so much from this AAR, and I really feel rroberson's flustration right now. Can you imagin Xargun's thoughts were when the above Midway battle started! Right out of Butch Castady and the Sundance Kid. "Who are those guys!"
Men, thank you so much for letting us see the good, bad and ugly. You make us all better because of it.
Rroberson, it is a long war, and payback is, you know what.

Perhaps it is just hard coded in the game that no matter what kind of advantage US Players have they will not beat the Japanese prior to the Coral Sea date. I will check on my flyers exp tonite (since both of my carriers will likely survive the battles unless a jap sub pops one of them) and see if that was the issue. I now know better then to take him on unless I have overwhelming odds...something which I will have in a few months. Back to taking my lumps :).

Nothing hard-coded, but experience and leadership advantages do add up. There's definitely a gap in the early war and some of the US advantages in Anti Air, and faster, sturdier planes are not in full gear yet. You took a big risk and got smacked, but I thank you because I enjoyed reading every minute of it.

Keep up the good work, I'm impressed with your ability to bushwhack Xargun from time to time. Don't worry, the Japanese player gets his kick in 1942, but you are in for a heck of a fun ride as time goes on.

My thoughts ??? Well at first they were "God I hope thats not his CVs" I figured it would be 3 or all 4 of his CVs. Then after he launched and my CAP didn't do crap I was like "OH crap. There goes two of my CVs" But luckily his first wave didn' hit hard and the second wave was a joke. Then I struck back and put some torps into good old Enterprise.. I was happy about that.

Imagine this happening in the real world.. Both Rob and I went into this battle with a damage CV.. Rob admitted that the enterprise was damaged from our last engagement and so is the Hiryu. Now the Hiryu has more damage - but less than a third of it was inflicted this time around.. and the Akagi is hurt a little too... But now the Enterprise should be crippled and the Yorktown in the same boat as my 2 CVs... This leaves him with 2 good CVs and a damaged one against my 3 good and 3 damaged... Definately my advantage...

He gets another carrier soon (Hornet) but then so do I - unless I get hit by the possible bug surrounding an accelerated CV [if it happens this AAR may end unless Rob and I come to some sort of agreement]. SO the odds will still be in my favor.. PLus I've got like 2 CVEs and like 2 or 3 CVLs as well.. I should maintain the CV advantage for most of 42 I believe... Then it doesn't matter as even a 2:1 in my favor against his fighters and AA will mean a wiped out air group...

Oh well... Hopefully by fall 42 I will own China and most of Burma or at least beating the crap out of the Brits from 2 directions...

OH YEAH !!! MY good news... You will never guess what I found sitting around in a couple of bases on the asia coast ?? Nope.. 2 complete Divisions playing garrison... I don't know how they got there or why they are still there, but they are getting an express ride to the front.. I wonder what 2 MORE divisions will do for me in china.... These are actual chinese area divisions and not ones of the 4 or so divisions I've pulled out of Manchukuo...

China will be mine....

Sadly I believe that will be true. I just have not figured out how to slow him down there. I almost swear those are panzers bearing down on Lanchow. I have tried the molasses strategy of pulling back everywhere and smacking him where he is weak, but he has made a huge effort in terms of troops and the Chinese just arent up to it. I may lose the entire country (though not soon thank god for slow movement in China) unless I can figure out something to slow down the Japanese hordes that are everywhere. You guys should see the map...in fact...here it is :).

Status: offline 		Those nice big guns in the arty units from Manchukuo pound the hell out of these chinese nicely.. I would probably already have another chinese base, but I have half of my units chasing Rob's units all over the map trying to pin them down and wipe them out.. What you see in his post is just the northernmost attempt at wiping out units. I think I have like 4 or 5 Armies / Corps / whatever they are called trapped and should be wiping them out soon.

The only way he could save them is to send units from Lanchow and if he did two things would happen...

1. They would arrive too late
2. My troops in Kungchang would hit Lanchow like a hammer and take the city trapping more of his men
