The German sniper moved slowly, manoeuvering behind the advancing American engineers. He sat quite still, only breathing slowly the air of the fatherland. Carefully he aimed his rifle at the enemy troops. He squeezed the trigger, and then came the BANG! His name was remembered forever, as that single shot caused 7 (seven) casualties. Now that's what I call a good aim!

By the way, I know that one shot in the game does not necessarily equal one shot In Real Life, and also that casualties include any of "not being able to fight" conditions. Perhaps he hit the flamethrower fuel

And he's still in business, having just killed three others at the range of 550+ metres, also in one shot!

I know people moan about how unrealistic things occur in the game. Here is one for you. The panzer column moved down the street backed by German infantry. All that opposed them was one US ATG. The lead panzer fired one shot and killed all the ATG crew except for the leader. With a crew now of only one, the ATG fired back and gave a mobility kill to the lead panzer. The remaining crew member then bailed out and escaped through a building under a hail of MG fire, taking numerous hits. AHHHH!! has this sort of thing happened to you. Actually it happened in France and the crew member got a Silver Star (his 4th) for it.

Nice there. But don't get me wrong - I love this game for the small unpredictable occurrences. They make the game much more surprising and sometimes change the course of battles. Has no one scored more than the seven casualties from a sniper?

Similar, but different.
About 1/2 hour ago, I moved a very high quality Canadian Commando squad 1 hex and it was totally destroyed by a German (not SS) squad. 10 men in a single burst. Wow! Unpredictable. Fun, also. I just wish my guys could take out an entire squad in a single burst like that. ;-)

Shortly before his surprise enlistment in the USMC, A Communist Chinese sniper in one of my games potted 13 Japanese infantry in a single "shot" at 150 yards. The type A squad appeared out of the dark and rain (through which they chose to launch an assault) into the sights of valiant Comrade Lin; and he once more put the rifle he took from a dead warlord bandit to good use by dispatching or suppressing the entire squad in the time it takes to draw two quick breaths. Stopping only to remind himself of the importance of correct thinking by the vanguard of the workers and peasants, he proceeded to use his last 10 cartridges to eliminate two heavy machine gun crews and an anti-tank team. When interviewed for this story, he declined any credit for his deed. "I just followed in the glorious wake of the Party and of our commander, Comrade Mao. With them before me, how could I fall behind?"

Heh... I can add that my sniper had 79 experience - wasn't even veteran! And his name was: Spengler! 2Lt. Spengler, what a beautiful name

Hmm.. shouldn't snipers cause *real* heavy suppression against infantry? If I had one of my squad buddies head blown off in a single shot, I'd sure be darting for cover and not move one more inch in any direction...

Would be cool, Belisarius, but I just don't think you can make the engine recognize sniper-inflicted casualties and react accordingly. I think the game sees 'X' amount of casualties and suppression either comes or it doesn't. My guess here, though.

I´d probably duck just as fast if a machine gun started ripping up my squad. Any unspotted and unexpected source of accurate fire is a huge motivating factor to get out of it´s sight real fast. Where on the other hand, a unit taking enemy fire while trying to seize/defend its objective will generally enter a ´kill or be killed´ mode and keep shooting back unless things get completely out of hand, and probably couldn´t care less if there´s a sniper or not in the enemy trenches 100 yards away. I don´t think SPWAW can make this distinction between expected and unexpected sources of enemy fire (especially since all units always know when someone´s looking at them, even when they can´t see them themselves ), so all units on the board must more or less be considered to be in ´combat mode´ at all times, and therefore the amount of supression works just fine right now. If the modeling of unit leaders where better though, it would be nice if an experienced sniper with plenty of time to set up a shot had a better chance of taking out the leader than an ´ordinary´ casualty, causing loss of C&C. "The Leutenant isn´t feeling so well...Who´s in charge now?"

Also, why is it that tank crewmen, even when unbuttoned, never take casualties from small arms fire? Actually vehicle crewmen in general never seem to take casualties until they are forced to bail from a destroyed vehicle. And the only way (it seems) to kill a leader is to annihilate the unit he is with.

I wondered about this also; I thought thats what the 'vulnerable location' hits were.
