Believe it or not, I'm still hooked on Tropico as a time killer when my brain needs a break. Hockey and Rugby by EAsports. Euchre, Cribbage are always fun. But Liar's Dice is my favourite at the Snr NCOs mess. Oh...darts, can't forget darts.

In the realm of non wargaming gaming....
Settlers of Catan (preferably with 5-6 people)
I get a kick out of playing a card game "Bang!"....
and we usually do this while our weekly Baseball series' are being simmed using
Diamond Mind ver 9 (nothing like beating someone in a cruical series in baseball and then gunning them down later on...) well, there is something better, but I have been separated for a year and have almost forgotten about that....

I am home bound ( by choice, I have serious depression and paranoia problems), retired and have few friends. EQ gives me a means to interact with others that I cant or wont take advantage of in the real world. In 5 years I spent one year of my life playing EQ ..... that is an average of between 4 and 5 hours a day.

It has served me well. Originally it was 9.99 a month. Think I am wrong think it is 12.99 or 11.99 now. But I suspect EQ2 will be closer to 15 a month.

Non-wargames?? What are those?

Only thing other than WitP that I play nowadays is Silent Storm (and that is doesn't count as a non-wargame) on the rare occasion I have time to play between WitP turns.

My all time favorite non war game is backgammon. Analog backgammon, with the cube. Absolutely wild, aggressive and freewheeling. You can play 20 or 30 games in a night if you are serious about it. At a dollar a point it needs to be taken seriously, yet even a disaster (a gammon with the cube on 16--an extreme result--is still only $32) is not going to wreck you. Backgammon is great because you have to evalate each position against 2D6, analyze your opportunities and vulnerabilities, and make the best move that you can, always keeping in mind the power of the doubling cube to force your enemy either to surrender or to accept a double when he should not. A near-perfect blending of strategy, tactics, and blind luck. A vicious and elegant contest.

1. World of Warcraft. I'm in the beta, and it's just a blast.

2. Civilization 3.

3. Knights of the Old Republic. Nice Star Wars RPG.

4. Star Wars Galaxies. Buggy and flawed, but I still like it.

5. Highway to the Reich.

6. Battles in Normandy, probably, knowing me. :)

Many of favorites over the years, Civilization and Railroad Tycoon series are among the top not to mention PacWar. Just prior to WITP I played SimCity 4 Rush Hour which I love but I am not multi tasked and can't handle the concentraton keeping two balls in the air at once. To understand and enjoy a game like WITP takes focus (notice I didn't say play well). Like its grandfather GG PacWar, WITP has the theme and all the complexity that I like in games and will hold my attention like glue for many months and years to come.

As close to war as you ever want to get: Link: Operation Flashpoint
Tanks, Choppers, Planes and/or many grunts - all together on big (~100sq. km) maps. Probably the only game out there, that deserves the label 'Tactical Battlefield Simulation'. Especially when you add some amazing community designed addons, e.g. neural network based Artillery assets (CoC UA), platoon and higher level command interface (CoC CE), or just a lot of new vehicles and equipment. Not as fast-paced as your average First-Person-Shooter, but it often enough ends before you even know that an enemy is around

Okay, you can get a step closer: Link: VBS1 - Simulator based on the game above, designed for the USMC and Australian Army. If you ever plan to train you Michigan Milicia properly, this is the way to go. However, it is not a game anymore and that fact is also reflected by its price tag...

I haven't even booted up another game since I installed WitP on my HD. This despite the fact that I have obtained Steel Panthers MBT 3.01, Harpoon 2002 Western Pacific DB AND Baseball Mogul 2005 around the same time! Seriously, when I play other games (which is never lately, as I mentioned) I play games such as Stronghold Crusader, Railroad Tycoon II (I had RT3 and sold that dog), Baseball Mogul 2004/5. I also sometimes boot up old board games on Aide de Camp 2 and play them, although I haven't had the urge in a while. I am looking forward to the update for Steel Panthers MBT, once I get some extra time, I plan on installing that and putting some time in on that program. Unlike alot of people, I have found my problem isn't needing a hobby, but needing time for ALL the hobbies I enjoy! Besides gaming, I enjoy model building (armor/aircraft), collecting music CDs, travelling and camping. Now if I could only find a way to fit all those in along with work and my wife, I'd be in heaven!

And again - call that a sport? They wear helmets! Any one see Martin Johnson wearing a helmet!? But then again anyone see MJ doing a Calvin Kline commercial like some poster boy halfback, quarterwit or whatever they are called ? Noooo..

Nobody mentioned Europa Universalis? Big game, more nuances than you think.

Well right now I am only playing WitP. How can you have the time for anything else? ;-)

Outside wargames I am, or was, a big Quake player (Quake 2 & 3 specifically). I would be still if I could get broadband where I live. It seems that wargamers as a bunch tend to frown on FPSes and indeed I cringe too when I see them referred to as wargames. They aren't, it's just about running around shooting people, which I personally find rather fun! You just have to ignore the hordes of idiot teenagers, there are enough decent players about to compensate.

P.S. I am approaching 40, the oldest "Quaker" I ever met was 56.

Well everybody knows that your team won because it was raining during the semi-finale..

I was expatriate in Rotterdam during the worldcup, and we were two 'aliens' in the office. A french, your humble servitor, and one of your fellow countrymen, both passionate for this game... Real good time other there (if you except the dog, uuuh.. I mean the dutch food).

Ack! Heresy! Only games I play besides hardcore grognard wargames is Championship Manager 4 (soccer) and the latest iteration of Madden. It's all strategy, you know. COME AND JOIN THE DARK SIDE, FRAG!

Ron,
I enjoyed Tropico as well, it is a challenging game. I wasn't as thrilled with the Pirates version (Tropico II), but it seemed to sell well. Tropico was done by PopTop, the same people that did Railroad Tycoon 2 and I found I throughly enjoyed both.

Might as well add my .02...

Lets see...

Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries (fantastic game)
Call of Duty
MOO3
Knights of the Old Republic
Neverwinter Nights
Diablo 2 (used to be a die-hard)
BattleField 1942
Port Royale (surprisingly good game)
FreeLancer
Temple of Elemental Evil (Great RPG based on a classic D&D module)
Medal of Honor
Madden 2K4 (anxiously waiting 2K5 for PC)

There's others, but these have been the mainstays for a long while now.

Sounds like you were the scrawny runt at school growing up.

Non-wargames? Is there such at thing? I will play Madden football during football season. They've finally got the graphics and AI to a point where I can enjoy it. I will on occasion go through an Icewind Dale or Total War phase. Other than that, though, it's strictly wargames, man!

Star Wars Galaxies

Battlefield 1942

Civ III PTW and Conquest

Diablo 2

and I agree Matrix could do a company or squad level civil war game the whole war that would be killer.

You kiddin?!? That was one of my favorite tactics in the game. Kamikaze jeeps. Don't think it was representative but if you timed it right, a jeep could take out a tank. LOL!!
