Status: offline 		WitP is effectively available on this site and Store4War provides a french paper manual and a box AFAIK.
The team has apparently made the translation.
Why have I not be able to wait for this version??? because patience is not probably one of my virtue...

Thanks for all the efforts made by Store4War for the French Wargamer community.
A lot of my fellow countrymen will also been able to enjoy this great game as I did.

Status: offline 		The first in depth review of WITP was done in the current issue of the french magazine PC4War. It was an informed 5 page article which concluded with a verdict of 4.5/5 for the game. The same magazine had earlier published 4 articles on winning strategies for Uncommon Valor. They had announced that a group of fans was working on a translation of the rules, but I'm suitably amazed that it is already done. There is a small but thriving french wargaming community which is also somewhat younger than its coevals in the USA. Que voulez-vous, c'est comme ça !

I play also the original english version, because I could not wait 4 monthes for a french translation !
This game is a wonderful game and I hope it will sell a lot of copies in France (about 20-25 copies, more would be an exploit...)

Le Mieux n'est-il pas l'ennemi du Bien ?

I prefer to purchase overseas (US or UK) as the prices in Store4War seem quite abusive for me;and effectively it is the only site you can find Matrix games in Froggy Land.
Why should I buy there if I can find cheaper somewhere else?

Anyhow, the french wargaming society has been strong for a while now and did not go through quite the same decline as the US one. I myself stem from the french group as my first wargames all had to have a french rulebook (I started to learn english early to get to all those other good games).

Though for financial reasons I've grown disconnected from both the french and american side of wargaming, so I'm not quite sure how active things are right now. Last time I checked in Metz shops were closing, but I think things have improved once more. I haven't bought any wargaming magazines for ages either (no more Vae Victis, but also no more Command Magazine). Not even sure which are around anymore (Casus Belli devoted itself to RP only yars ago and I expect is gone now). Which reminds me, any news from Descartes since it was sold? Maybe the new owners will answer mail concerning copy rights and such...

I agree, as the anglosaxon wargaming community seems made of veryyyy old (sorry old guy's ) people which managed somehow to handle a PC, the european wargaming (i'm thinking mainly about french and germans) community is quite young and growing,
I can't explain why, for example, youngster americans are not attracted by wargaming

Maybe because the Pacific War is really an "exotic" war for the citizens of the "old Europe"

Without getting too political here, it may be that their desire for "war games" is dampend by real life and death issues that many young men and women in europe don't have to face. God bless our troops.

Dunno if it´s exoctic but the PacWar has allways been very popular in Germany, among the wargamers.

Status: offline 		I think the attraction of the Pacific War to Europeans might simply be the huge scope of naval war. If you are interested in the naval aspects of warfare you will sooner or later end up playing one form or another of a Pacific War game (my first in that area were Flat Top and Victory in the Pacific (and both had french rule translations)).

In general, another dfference is that Europe's history is warfare. We tend to be much more firmly routed in this history (My country was occupied by Germany twice in the past century, ruled by Austria, Prussia, Spain and France for centuries with numerous armed conflicts on or near our territory). On the other hand, we mostly seem to have rid ourselves of the urge to fight actual wars as most of us I expect do understand the real cost of war (again because our countries were devastated numerous times in the past centuries). Another interesting difference, possibly between the French centered wargaming community and wargamers in the rest of the world is that we have large numbers of leftists in the hobby (myself being a communist, I know of quite a few other communists and trotskysts playing) (though we obviously are no where near the majority of players). All of that means we still have some growth (another factor possibly are local stores, which I recall were much more frequented by high school and college students in France then in the US (I studied there for three years)).

Though I am also pretty pessimistic for the future of the hobby out here in Europe right now.
