Please don't take me for a whinner - I love this kinda game and once played the original War in The Pacific via PBEM for 4 years . . . REAL TIME! SO I'm hard core and willing to wait for the bugs to be shaken out of this version however . . .

Today I received my wall map from Matrix and GUESS WHAT?! The fonts for the place names on the map are definately too small to read without a magnifying glass!!!

I know already that I'm simply going to have to memorize which island is which or use a magnifyer if I'm going to use the map at all but does anyone know if Matrix is ever going to address the "font to small to read" issue in the game itself???

I want to love the game but see no reason to have to get a headache every time I play.

I support this. The font problem IS a problem, not only for people with eye sight problems.
Is Matrix aware of what could happen if someone would start legal action claiming damage to eye sight?
I only wished all the other players active in this forum would also give appropiate support, because I'm sure that everybody is suffering as well. And we all want - no, NEED this game, damn it! (oops, sorry ).
Sigh.

USe the search option 'font' (change the default so it looks back more than 1 month) and you will find a lengthy font discussion including an interim fix for WINXP/.

BTW you cannot permanently damage your eyes by trying to see somthing too small, so the threat of a lawsuit is frivolous.

I know the thread about changing the font. The bad thing is that this will have side effects with other programs, Outlook for instance.

Your remark about eye sight damge is beside the point as I see it. When trying to focus an image with is not sharp to begin with, this will usually result in an headache. Ask your physisian if you don't believe me. The size of the font is not as important, in so far I agree with you. BTW, I use an Eizo FlexScan L671 with a digital connection. So it's not the frequency.

And I did not threaten Maxis, why should I. I am concerned that Maxis would run into difficulties IF someone would take legal action against Maxis. Therefore I cannot understand why you claim my concern to be frivolous.

And Matrix is responsible for buying your monitor which is too small and your desk which is not at the proper height and your desk chair which is not properly positioned and your room lighting?

Case Dismissed

Why do you insist on making sense, Frag? It's the nuisance value that counts. Frivolous lawsuits get settled every day just to get the d@mned lawyer to go away.

I knew a plaintiff attorney once who did nothing but represent auto insurance claimants. The guy never bathed, was a poster child for halitosis, wore tattered, unlaundered clothes, and cultivated the most obnoxious personality and interpersonal traits he could think of. Insurance adjusters were known to pull out their checkbooks as soon as they saw him coming in the door.

The guy's a multi-millionaire.

Oh, I just loose it when I see those "I'm going to sue" type posts ... it falls in the same catagory as "get a life".

a) If you actually had the money to pursue a civil suit of such nature you would likely have much better things to do with your time.

b) If you actually had the money to pursue a civil suit of such nature, you could buy 2by3 and tell them what font to use.

c) The very first question out of a Judge's mouth will be "Why didn't you stop using it?"

d) The very first question from a lawyer will be "Are you stupid?"

e) a 60" projection system to play this game at a level where you will want *smaller* fonts is cheaper then the retainer that the lawyer will ask for.

Choose your letter

On a serious note, font changes are on the wish list, but that has nothing to do with this

a) If you're a lawyer, you don't have anything better to do with your time.
b) Why buy it when you can get a judgment, execute it, and own the place anyway? (The same philosophy espoused by, "If the meek do inherit the earth, they will probably post it as collateral for a loan, default on the payments, and lose it.")
c) See, the whole idea is never to get in front of a judge, and, if you do, make sure you have picked the right people to sit on the jury (reference the O.J. Simpson criminal trial).
d) A lawyer would never ask such a question. He would likely receive a response something like, "Because my client is so undeniably stupid, it could never have occurred to him that he might be damaging his eyes. Therefore, the defendants (who, by the way, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, have deep pockets and are a corporation, so that a judgment in favor of the plaintiff would not actually hurt a real person) ought to be held liable for their negligence."
e) I'm taking this one on strict 20 percent contingency, 'cause I'm gonna win (it's a lock with Frag leading the defense team).

Possible lawsuits...

"The game was intentionally created so realistic and immersive I was thrown into Delayed Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome from my experiences during the 'Nam and have suffered greivious mental anguish due to your companies carelessness and lack of empathy for my plight and that of other Veterans. You failed to put a disclaimer on the box."?

Or, "Due to the stress of long term immersive gameplay while emulating the persona of the strategic commander of US forces during WW2, my client now thinks he's Admiral Nimitz"?

Worse..."My clients spouse, after badly losing a 2 year PBEM game of WitP while playing as the Japanese CinC of all Axis forces in WW2, quite properly committed ritual Seppiku. My client is sueing for mental anguish (and $199.99 for carpet cleaning) after discoverying her disembowled husband husband on the computer room floor."?

"c) See, the whole idea is never to get in front of a judge, and, if you do, make sure you have picked the right people to sit on the jury (reference the O.J. Simpson criminal trial)."

Places in America known to be "sympathetic" to class action lawsuits, supplying juries/judges the major local industry...just have to (for example) make sure someone there had played WitP.

Oh boy, what have I started.
Ok, let's go through this one by one.
Mr. Frag, you write a hundred times "Thou shalt not make fun of customers' remarks". Handwritten! No cut 'n paste please.
And yes, you're right. My wording may be perceived as tense. Sorry about that.
May be you only have to write it 50 times.
And for the last time: I wished to express my concern, that's all.
These procedures are now closed.

Oh, I agree with you about the font ... but my solution was a nice shiny 20" sony monitor a number of years ago.

I just don't see how 1024x768 and 15" or 17" monitors are functional for anyone without squinting. It has nothing to do with WitP, doing *anything* on a small monitor is hard on the eyes.

They can't program a bigger monitor with a patch. Changing the font is not going to magically make your monitor larger so it is easier to see things.

Yep, I'd also like to have a 20" gun. Alas, my budget limits me to 18 inch. Still, it's a flat top - err - screen. Not too bad.
And in due time things will improve, I'm sure. Screen, font, life ...
BTW, where is your sheet with the fifty lines?
And where's the patch?

I'm on the second word now ... fifty lines eh?

Obviously the patch will be delayed until I finish this.

gentleman - I was the original compainee on this post and I appreciate your help - but - I'm still stuck

I"m running XP but when I go to delete the original 'times new roman' font my system will not allow it. When I go to copy the new font into that folder it instructs me to first delete the original font. Any clues on how to remove or delete a font?

Thanks.

Sorry - I guess some of us smart@sses forgot about you in our never ending quest to be witty.

I think you're playing with fire here in trying to change fonts. I'd recommend forgetting it and just getting used to using your magnifier.

I have a 17" flatscreen monitor and everything looks perfectly legible to me (of course, every once in awhile, I have to use a Kleenex to wipe my nose prints off the screen).

I play War in the Pacific in windowed mode with an 18 inch LCD Flat Panel monitor in 1280x1024 resolution.

The font is small but, in my opinion still readable. I've always had my monitor set up for maximum area so I can have more than one window up at the same time.

I LIKE playing the game in the unsupported window mode because it lets me have the game up and respond to emails or instant messages a lot easier than having to ALT-TAB all the time which almost had me to the point of giving up and quitting the game. I'm constantly running the game along with Outlook Express and 4 instant messengers and windows mode is a godsend. Also, like what was mentioned in another thread, it seems more crisp than when in full screen.

Windows mode is in 32 bit color depth if you have set that in your display properties (compared with 16 bit full screen). That's why it looks "better".

Much simpler to edit the font in the exe instead of screwing up your system fonts. Of course it it unsupported, but you and a hex editor could get friendly

Evil work! Shame on you! That is only done by bad men who smoke cigarettes, drink beer out of the bottle (sorry my friends down under) and program in Assembler and even use Go To statements!
No! Not me!
I'll wait until I get rich and buy me a real large monitor, or I wait for the patch.
Whichever is sooner

Darling, will you please bring me a fresh beer, and empty my ash tray? Thanks honey.

LOL. In my technical school programming class, our instructor would give an F to a program that had even a single go to loop. Then he punished us by making us learn cobol.

IF Bad
THEN GOTO Hell

COBOL = compiles only because of luck

COBOL as punishment? Did you know COBOL was invented by a female US Navy Admiral?
At least in so far it is a very appropriate programming language for WitP fans.
There is more to WitP than you see at first glance :)

Ah, yes, I remember it well ... the Joycelyn Elders Sky Marshal character from "Starship Troopers" ... "To defeat the bug, we must understand the bug" ...

After she retired, she invested in condom-iniums.
