My main point wasn't the two day turn but the ability to launch turn one port attacks on all 3 main ports. The two day turns just magnify the effects of these attacks somewhat. It clearly has to be conceded that the first turn strikes far exceeded what was historically plausable. They may have been a mathematically possible but lets be serious. Taking out the US BB fleet, the British BB fleet and most of the sub fleet at Manila by 8 Dec would have been a naval disaster without precedent. Since this result can be reliably achieved in the game before the allied player has any chance to respond it normally should be prevented by house rules.

Now players can play however they like using whatever agreements they desire or no agreements at all. My point was that if you start out by destroying most of the allied navy in the first turn or two, it should not be a surprise to see the JP forces run wild. If on the other hand the allies are left with something to fight with, the JP player will not be likely to achieve such rapid results.

Not trying to start a fight as its been an interesting AAR. I'm just killing time waiting for the patch.

Hi, The airfields in PI were hit after the USAAF groups had landed due to a SNFAU not Japanese surprise. PI launched all aircraft in response to PH attack. Ships in Manila were underway hours before any Japanese strike could have arrived. Same for Singapore.
It was Dec 8 1941 in Singapore when it was Dec 7 at PH. Force "Z" Pow and Repulse were underway from Singapore before any Japanese port attack could have been directed against them in port.

Fine, then allow the Allied player to put their ships to sea on the first turn. They can still be sunk by Betties. There is no where to hide. Either:

A. They are kept in port where they can be hit by a prepared raid.
B. They leave port and chance being sunk like the Repulse and Prince of Wales.

No port attacks is a no go. What are these magic ports that can prepare their defense in only a few hours from an attack at dawn? Submarines will survive but the other ships are at risk. Having an arbitrary rule banning additional port attacks is nonsensical.

Players should come to an agreement as the following:

1. The surprise attack will come at X (be it Pearl Harbor or Manila/Singapore).
2. The Allied player may move his ships at Y out to sea if they so choose.
3. The Japanese player may attack Y with port attacks if they wish.

Yes it is very easy to lose more taking a base then the base is worth in VP so what? Thats part of the problem with this plan in the first place. What good does it do Japan to conquer places but lose it's war making potentional in the process. Japan can kill it's self winning but that has been a problem military forces have always had to consider.
"Is it worth it"?

What war making potential? The Marianas Turkey Shoot? By the middle of 1943 Japan's only war making potential is to have control of territory and dig in. Keeping thousands of Zeros and Betties around is rather meaningless. The Japanese had a numerical advantage at the Turkey Shoot. Big deal. How many carriers and battleships did they have? A lot and it didn't help at all. It was still a Turkey Shoot.

The choice should be Pearl Harbor or Manila AND Singapore, as the latter two could be easily sync'ed.

Yes, you are right. I will go back and modify my statement. Also, why can't all three be syncronized now that you mention it? Dawn attacks at Manila and Singapore with a noon time strike at Pearl Harbor.

Also, why can't all three be syncronized now that you mention it? Dawn attacks at Manila and Singapore with a noon time strike at Pearl Harbor.

Too dangerous to be detected. The carriers needed the night to run into launch distance - with a time difference of 6h to 7h (Pearl GMT+10, Manila & Singapore GMT-8, but geo. Sing more like GMT-7) it was to dangerous to run into a prepared defence and a counter attack.

Hi, Read my post. I allow Japan to make port attacks but the Allied player is allowed to give orders except at PH. This is the same house rule I use in every game where i am Japan so it's not something invented just for this game.

So basically you place no restrictions on JP first turn attacks?? Seems that I remember a house rule of no attacks outside of fighter cover.

OK dont know if you would consider it objective but here is an analysis nontheless. Torpedo attacks at Singapore Naval base and Cavite Manila were NOT remotely possible. Never mind "NIGHT" time torpedo attacks, which is the only way a "SURPRISE" attack could have occured at those locations. Lets just hope that Pry's port attack "FIX" will be adopted in V1.3

Sembawang naval base was a target on December 8th. It's very possible that the PH attack could have been delayed two hours to allow a surprise attack on Singapore. Even without a delay it's possible ships may have been sunk nonetheless. The thing is historically there was bad weather over Singapore.

You have proven that the decision to leave litterally dozens of Allied squadrons and LCUs either out or delayed from the historic reinforcement oob is a mistake. As is the artifical on NEI/Brit a/c delayed upgraded rule. Again as you have aptly demonstrated allows the Japanese player to delay the conquest of the SRA without fear of reprocussions.

Don't know anything about this. Make sure the Matrix people know so it can be fixed.

Very nice work executing your plan.

Thanks but it can be executed better by more skilled players.

Hi, The only house rules I used in the current PBEM games (I place no restrictions except the port attack on players running Japan against me) where I am Japan is I only make the PH port attack on turn 1. If the Allied player leaves ships in port in range of my LBA on turn 2 I make port attacks.
It is my personal rule not to attack outside my air control. I don't restrict the other player. Every one of my TF ends turn 1 inside my air control. I make no landings on turn 1 except for historical (I don't use the extended movement on turn 1 for landings)

As Japan I always allow the Allied player to give orders on turn 1 except at PH.

I don't mind when the other player as Japan uses the extended movement. I try to show why it is wise to stay inside air control.

Ok here is what is going on. He can take the DEI and Phillipines if he moves enough troops there. Sinapore will be a really tough nut to crack and Burma is going to be too. New Zeland is going to be hard for him to take he needs a couple of more divisions to take if he has the troops. I wonder how many troops he will leave on the Hawaiian Islands and the other Central Pacific islands.

Here is what my intelligence screen show me.

Allies Japan

AA 708 781

Ground 526 421

Flak 93 1043

OPS 341 606

Totals 2064 2851

Here are number of ships I have sunk

over 360

By type:

3 BB's
1 CVE
2 Av's
5 Ca's
5 Cl's
2 CVL's
3 CV's
39 DD's
36 MWS
21 Pg's
4 Tk's
2 Ao's
158 Ap's
74 Ak's

I hope his loses in planes and ships have hurt. He has had a great start and got what he said he was going to get, but at what cost? Will he be able to put up a good defense when and were I want to counter attack.

Hi, Read my post. I allow Japan to make port attacks but the Allied player is allowed to give orders except at PH. This is the same house rule I use in every game where i am Japan so it's not something invented just for this game.

Could you live with a rule to deny movement in PI and Malaya without a Pearl Habor attack?

Sounds about right. I have enough to defend Indo-China with but not enough to take Rangoon. New Zealand is a big pain, when did the division show up by the way?

Yes, I've lost a lot of planes due to flak. However I'm not concerned about the losses. Yes, it hurts the victory point thing but I'm actually trying to put the Japanese in the strongest position possible. Huge losses of Nates, Betties, and Zeros aren't that important because there are plenty more where they came from.

Also from a realism perspective I wonder where the PI gets new B-17s and P-40s every turn from. It seems unlikely the US could supply them from the United States.

How do you find the count of ships sunk? The only way I know how is by manually doing a count and this is too tedious for me with these big numbers. Anyway the state of the AP fleet is my biggest concern. AKs have half the losses and there were more of them to begin with. The BB losses are unfortunate since one was lost in a pointless bombardment of Midway and another in a pointless bombardment of Mogami Harbor. If I did it again I wouldn't bother with bombardmenting these positions because it played no role in the outcome. The carriers I would keep away from the land-based aircraft and just patrol around MH. The APs are going to be lost anyway because of the costal guns.

The only thing that loss of planes hurt is the victory point margin. There are still enough replacements. The state of island defenses vary but there will be no particular weak points.

The divison showed up a week or teo before you came a callin. Yes I counted the ships by hand. I know he has many planes in reserve, the thing is how many of his skilled pilots have been killed, because I have better planes than he will very soon.

Hi, It's never about the aircraft. Japan can build them much faster then she can train pilots.
The A6M2 has a combat bonus early in war.
Once the bonus is gone and the groups have 30-50 percent untrained pilots Japan will not win any protracted air campaign and the Betty/Nell stop scoring hits on moving TF and strikes against targets with CAP lose much of their effectivness making the defense of Japanese bases that much more difficult.
But in terms of pure numbers of aircraft Japan can put up there will never be a decline before Allied bombing hits aircraft or engine production. Try the 1944/45 scenarios to see how fast Japanese pools decline.
Will Japan be able to keep up with loss in this game? Not after 1943. Losing 100 aircraft to score 1 hit on a single transport makes it pointless to try. 10 USN CV will put up 150+ fighter CAP and 150+ escorts for their strikes. Japan even with good pilots can't stop this.
Check the USN ship arrival list to see how long before the USN has 10 Essex class.
Add 6 months to this time to arrive at date when it will be apparent Japan has lost this game.

USe the intell screen "sunk ships" to count lost ships. Just sort and count by type.

Hi The Japanese bombed Kuala Lumpur ? Have you bombed the oil center at Palembang yet to prevent the Allies from hauling oil to OZ?
(Patrol planes and the Dutch transports can fly more supply to Singapore then KL will provide. Centers stop producing when enemy unit is in the same hex. (Why the forward Chinese supply centers cannot be held in long term struggle)

I am confused by this. Maybe I should go back and read the whole thread, but why would Japan bomb oil centers it intends to capture? Don't I want these intact to supply oil once I capture them? Am I missing something?

No, I will need that oil. I've got enough resources though for a good long while. On supply planes I've got a lot of experience with them already. Dutch transports will not be able to ship that much supply. Plus there won't be any Dutch transports after Java and Sumatra are invaded. Singapore will be totally cutoff and then they can starve.

Do you mean to say Chungking will starve very soon since it is no longer producing resources? How long do you think this will take?

Well, if a unit is surrounded, it still takes 30 days or more to completely starve.

Singapore has over 100,000 supply at the moment and the british are dug in all over the place. I have moved over 400,000 oil points between Oz and India.

Sembawang naval base was a target on December 8th. It's very possible that the PH attack could have been delayed two hours to allow a surprise attack on Singapore. Even without a delay it's possible ships may have been sunk nonetheless. The thing is historically there was bad weather over Singapore.

Yes, as was Singapore proper, but they were night level "bombing" attacks and they were tracked by radar miles out and were NO surprise. I personally dont have a problem with "level" or "dive" bombing attacks on any ports. Just cant agree with carte blanche torpedo attacks in protected ports (especially by multi-engine LBs) and accross the board surprise. Both Singapore and the PI as oppose to PH were on "HIGH ALERT", both locations Tracked incoming raids prior to attack, in fact USAFFE tracked, scrambled and vectored fighters to intercept a IJN probing flight the day before the PH attack. The incredible circumstances that caught the planes at Clark not withstanding, I doubt very much any surprise to the degree at PH was possible at Singapore or PI, IMHO.

This should be factored into the base defenses to give a protection bonus. It may very well be, I haven't looked at the Manila or Singapore base forces to check. I know some of the Japanese BFs have a sound detactor, not sure what it does though.

There isn't a whole lot of supply up that way anyway. Without Chungking it is not going to be enough to feed all those hungry Chinese.
