Situation Report

What a day!! My battleships brings death and destruction to Batavia. More than 5000!!! casualties were reported, what a bust If this wasn't enough - 121 Allied aircraft were destroyed today. Mostly on the ground in Batavia, including no less than 49 Dauntless dive bombers! My recon flights reported correctly, there were a lot of bombers at the base - but instead of finding obsolote Dutch torpedo bombers, Blenheims etc. I find that Wobbly has transferred in some of his carrier based dive bomber squadrons. This is almost more than I could have hoped for - a daring gamble, but extremely risky plot to inflict hurt upon the seemingly unstoppable Japanese steamroller.

The airfields at Batavia have been closed - reported at 62% damaged. This will make it impossible to withdraw the remaining air units, and you can bet your hiney on that I'm not going to let get away. My battleships will hit Soerabaja tomorrow, and then return to Batavia in 48 hours. The bombardment groups will shuttle up and down to Batavia until my troops can march in and finish it all.

I'm not sure whether Wobbly knows that 100000 men soon will unload at Kragen - he has spotted and attacked my heavy surface units and carriers. I can't imagine that there's anything stopping me know. The Allied cv's have already shot their bolt and will most likely not be back - unless they will try to retrieve their bomber groups that is. Me not think so....

Sweeps and defending Zeros shot down a lot of Allied bombers and defending fighters today, and the combat value of the ones that remain must have been severely depleted.

In China 6-1 odds was achieved without the defending Chinese capitulated - but the noose still lies around their necks as another 40k Jap troops arrives and are ordered to start a shock attack. The fate of 40000 Chinese will be decided tomorrow.

Sit. map - Java

A nice combined air attack just added to the already vast destruction inflicted to Batavias airbases today.

Situation Report

Mostly an encouraging day! 53 Allied ac destroyed on the ground and in the air for 0 Jap losses
Just can't get better than that. This included another 23 dive bombers - af damage at Batavia remains at 73!

My bombardment group hit Soerabaja today - Allied losses were relatively light, but the ships still in port were hit
heavily.

Every single Allied air attack was either turned away of failed to hit their targets. It must be extremely frustrating to
be enrolled in Wobblies army right now. Guess there will be no forgiveness if the war still rages in 2-3 years.

It's incredible that the Chinese are holding on despite of being outnumbered 17-1 without having any fortifications!!
Another attack is ordered tomorrow, I want to get rid of the cauldron while I still got it completely encircled.

Lunga was also captured today, and phase 2 will start in a few weeks. Damage to the KB carriers is now down to between
2 and 3. Tomorrow reinforcements will arrive at Truk and more just a few days away.

In Java I've marched the 2 small SNLF units out of Kragen and onto the main railroad. This took only 2 days, and my plan
is working smoothly. Wobbly has moved out a unit to meet me, but that doesn't matter. 30000 troops have already been unloaded
without casualties at Kragen, and in a few days one division will march south towards Soerabaja while another one goes north.
Should take no more than a couple of weeks to clear the island.

The 'Mini KB' is providing efficient CAP and 4 Allied subs were attack by asw ac at Soerabaja today, one was hit. Me thinks Wobbly
is still waiting for me to land there...!?

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Situation Report

Another day without any Japanese ac being lost. Only 7 Allied ones are destroyed though. My bombardment group will hit Batavia again tomorrow to keep the air fields out of action.

The Chinese are still holding out against 41-1 in odds, and I'm beginning to understand that they will have to be destroyed. Wobbly is trying to break the encirclement, but a full division is guarding the northern part of the cauldron, and it will take a lot of Chinks to move them!

Other Chinese intruders are ejected from the railroad far to the south not far from Shanghai. Incredible that they can exist without supplies for that long.

In New Britain troops are being landed in an attempt to destroy the remaining Allied troops still lingering in the wilderness. Annoying to have them wander around, as I can't leave any of my bases ungarrisoned.

A ft landing at Teloekbetoeng meet heavier resistance than expected, and will be evacuated again tomorrow. I'm merely probing for weak spots....

At Kragen almost all the troops of the 25th Army are ashore, and the combat units are in excellent shape. The 33rd Division will march north towards Madiven and Djakjatarta while the 55 Division will move against Soerabaja and Madang. The 2nd Tank Regiment will most likely follow the 33rd north. The 2 garrison units already scouting ahead of the main force will be left behind as garrisons as soon as the enemy bases are captured.

Madiven holds a size 4 airfield, and as soon as my Zeros and bombers are in place - there will be no more need for the 'Mini KB' to provide air cover. I'm planning a forray into the Indian Ocean.

At Truk numerous elite SNLF units are now in place, and will load for Canton Isl. tomorrow. The KB will provide cover for the invasion, then split up into 3 carrier divisions and threaten Allied shipping lanes before combining again and heading towards Singapore. I'm contemplating to leave a carrier division in the Solomons. It would certainly keep dear Al on his toes Yees, me like this idea. The Allies cv's will be severly weakened by the loss of their dive bombing squadrons, so 2 carrier Divisions + the small carriers should be more than a match for them if they decide to show up.

PzB, you are gutting Wobbly like a fish.

In other words, "it sucks to be Wobbly"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Situation Report

Not the best of days! The bombardment runs doesn't cause that much damage anymore, and it's difficult to find anything more
to destroy...! A lot of uncoordinated Allied airstrikes flying around Java, but they're not really a menace.

I'll tell you what's a menace: DO-24 flying boats!!! Aaargh, they're driving me nuts. Today they hit the light carrier Zuiho, inflicting
19 sys damage, 1 float and 9 fires The latter will most likely increase sys damage, and I'm not happy. Since there's really no more need
for the 'Mini KB' outside Java, I'm moving them back to Singapore. There I will decide whether the Zuiho will have to go into dock or not.
If not, I'll consider sending the 'Mini KB' into the Indian Ocean. Without their dive bombes, the Allied cv's doesn't really pose a big threat!

One bad thing follows another and the Chinks manages to break my encirclement!! Hm, my defending division had less than 50 exp - but still.
20k Chinese troops against 20k Jap troops should NOT give the so called inferior Chinese an 8-1 odds Well, even 50-1 odds wasn't enough
to eliminate the defending Chinese troops, so I'll revert to the old formula - spank and chase!

I've moved in Zeros to Kragen and base forces will be unloaded tomorrow. So I'll now withdraw all but the heavy surface units which will continue
their bombardment runs to soften up the defenders. Since there are no torpedo bombers around, the remaining Martins can kill themselves on the
big ships guns.

2 Division that have been resting in Singapore are now being loaded for Bangkok. They will march towards Rangoon and prepare to capture it.

Garrison, base force and construction units are being rounded up and shipped to the South Pacific. I need to prepare Shortland and Lunga!

The great decoy has also begun: 15000 troops are being loaded for Canton Island. If the landing is unopposed, I will try to make as much fuss as
possible and occupy everything within range and try to make Wobbly believe that I'm moving to cut of his dear NZ and Oz from the US.

Since I know that 2 or 3 Allied cv's are in the Indian Ocean, I've decided to split up the KB.
3 Carrier divisions have been formed to execute Operation Paranoia!

1st. Carrier Div.
Zuikaku
Shokaku

2nd. Carrier Div.
Soryu
Hiryu

3rd. Carrier Div.
Akagi
Kaga

The 1st. will follow the invasion force to Canton and provide landing support.
The 2nd. will move towards Palmyra and search for Allied shipping.
The 3rd. will move into the Coral Sea and search for Allied shipping aroud New Caledonia and Oz.

In about one month the 1st. and 3rd. Carrier Divisions will move back to Truk and then head for Singapore.
The 2nd. will remain in the South Pacific and operate as commerce raiders and possibly support an invasion of PM.

I'm hoping to put as many sticks in Wobblys machinery as possible. Sighting Jap cv's all over the Pacific Wobbly will
be forced to divert convoys, and supplies and troops will not reach their destinations. Perhaps I can even bag a few
valuable troops and tanker convoys.

Any comments!? Am I to audacious, or does these maximum effort operations have potential!?

You'll give Wobbly a migraine trying to figure out what you are doing.

Remind me not to take you on as a PBEM opponent.

At this stage breaking down your CV units into smaller TFs is a good idea. I am really surprised that more IJN players have not risked doing carrier raids on the Aust-NZ-US SLOC as there are lots of targets in this area. I would think that it is important to not just aim at sinking ships but to force the allies to suspend convoys until it is safe...........damaging them is also better than sinking as they will tie up badly needed repair yards for the allies.

Situation Report

Not many targets to find in the DEI - but my retreating 'Mini KB' is being pursued
by the uber Do-24 flying wonderboats. For the second time in 2 days the Zuiho is hit by
the precision bomber that penetrated a 30+ Zero CAP. The ship is now almost crippled with 46
sys damage and 2 fires. She will make it back to Singapore for extended repairs.

The KB will not enter the DEI until this menace has been taken care off!

I know an anomaly when I see one, and if this isn't one - I'll eat my copy of WitP!

In China the troops that were besieged have not lost their bicycles, because they
are running for their lives and already out of the hex with Jap troops lagging far behind in pursuit.

In the South Pacific the 2nd and 3rd Carrier divisions are heading for Kwajalein and Rabaul to refuel before heading for the Allied shipping lanes. 8 tankers are also sent out to support all 3 Carrier Divisions.

Not much to report today.

My divisions on Java are now getting closer to their targets - a small invasion force will also try to cut of
their opponents retreat routes.

The 'Mini KB' was disbanded at Singapore - the Zuiho stays at 46 sys damage. The loss of her 36 ac will seriously impede the striking power of my small carriers, and I've decided to cancel the raid into the Indian Ocean. 113 ac isn't much of a hammer to wield!

And yeah, the uber Do-24's hit the AP Teiyo Maru today. 18 sys, 7 flood and 7 fires...

The 2 large divisions will move north/south tomorrow.

In the Philippines I'm preparing to ship the last supporting units to Singapore.
Also sending construction units to newly captured bases.

Situation Report

Another quiet day.

Madioen was captured easily enough, and as soon as an aviaton regiment is in place - I will operate a size 4 af on Java.
Soerabaja is next tomorrow!

Sending troops against the souther tip of Sumatra, northern tip of Java and Bali as well.
Want to occupy as many bases with search ac as soon as possible.

In China I'm in full pursuit of Wobblys men that's racing north towards Sien.

Gathering strength for the storm in Singapore: 250k men in place already. Need a lot of fuel and supplies to support the massive invasion of India. 2 divisions will land in Bangkok tomorrow and march north.

In a month I will divide up one division in Java and move the other one south to Truk. This one will prepare for the invasion of....PM! Yes, it's risky but I can't leave this outpost in enemy hands as that will make Rabaul and most of NG uninhabitable by the end of the year.

Will be at least 6-8 weeks before I can sail for India, but will do everything I can to be ready before.

Situation Report

Operation Paranoia immediately scores - and what a start! For some unknown reason, Wobbly has sent his cruisers back into the Coral Sea, and the crack 3rd Carrier Division immediately locates them despite of the t-storms that are raging in the area!

3 long range strikes are launched towards the Allied ships that are located SE of Woodlark Island just SE of Gili Gili.
The Kates have to carry bombs, and even though this reduces their efficiency, the results are very gratifying:

The heavy cruiser Canberra is riddled with bombs that penetrates her thin deck plates and ignites her magazines - BOOM! [
The light cruiser Achilles is it by six 250kg bombs that puts 2 of her 6" guns out of action. She's left burning, but not heavily damaged...
The French Le Triomphant is also hit by several bombs and left a blazing wrekc.
Finally, the destroyer Flusser is hit by 2 bombs and left burning.

The enemy ships were heading NE, most likely to intercept my transports or Gasmata or Rabaul?
Why Wobbly would do something like this as he has first hand knowledge of hard the Nells based at Rabaul stings, I dont' know... I do know that he will start diverting ships in the Coral Sea and most likely thing the entire KB is paying him another visit - something which is the truth

The Kaga and Akagi are ordered to proceed West at top speed, so if Wobbly want to get awat - he has to run north or east..! Bad weather will make it difficult to sink the remaining ships, but I will give it my best.

In Java, the Dutch defenders of Soerabaja puts up a brave defense and repulses the first attack by superior forces. The numbers are so greatøy stacked up against them that the base will fall as soon as the forts have been reduced though.

In China Homan falls without a fight, and 60k troops are already besieging Sian. Bombardments ordered for tomorrow.
Cleansweep operations are also being performed against smalled Chinese detachments that tried to block the railway in Northern China. Similar operations will take place just north of Nanning in a few days.

Situation Report

The invasion of Java is moving ahead smoothly - the defenders at Soerabaja are still holding out, but I'm in no hurry.
On the northern end of the island, a mixed regiment landed and captured Merak. I will try to cut of troops retreating north
towards Batavia.

2 damaged dd's, one PG and one AP were hit by Do-24 flying boats. The destroyers were damaged in the latest bombardment runs.
It was rather foolish to include dd's in the bombardments as these always takes a lot of hits. A hard learned lesson - will designate them as
escorts next time.

I've also lost 3 ac to op losses - and this annoys me. I should have known better than to move my Daitais when it rained, but I was in a hurry and
wanted to move them. This is the kind of sloppiness that can cost me the war: Japanese resources are scarce, and expect from situations that requires it,
ac should not be moved unless weather is clear or cloudy at worst! Patience is a virtue I keep telling myself....

The AV showed up in strength over Rangoon today, no doubt to protect the supply convoy that moved in during the squalls last night. They surely gave me
a bloody nose, guess the evil kanivel Kiwi enjoyed that one 9 Sallys and 3 Zeros were destroyed in the attack - but at least both transports were left as
burning hulks. (The AK Eidsvold is most likely a norwegian ship - Eidsvold is the name of the place were the constitution was written in 1814.)

Tomorrow renewed AF attacks against Rangoon will resume. More Zeros have been moved north, it would be a good thing to reduce the group before moving north.
In a few days 2 divisions will move from Bangok and head towards Rangoon. 2 para regiments will also be readied and move north.

In Singapore the Zuiho has alredy repaired 2 damage points in just 3-4 days, so I think it should be possible to get her ready for the forthcoming operation.
(Have to come up with a cunning name for that show...hm, what about Operation Hangover! )

In the Coral Sea I failed to find the retreating Allied warships, but I did come over some sitting ducks! 5 transports were hit and 4 of them are already sinking.
It seems like Op. Paranoia really has potential! The transports heading for Canton Island are still some distance from their target but Car Div 3 will soon try to slip undetected through the gap between Canton and Palmyra Islands. From there they will lunge at the easternmost supply lines that should be full of convoys shuttling between the States and Oz/NZ.

Situation Report

As promised, I did send a lot of firepower to Rangoon! It did cost me as 8 Zeros were shot down in addition to 4 bombers, but 23 Warhawks of the AVG were
shot down while another 5 were destroyed on the ground. Try to keep up with that attrition rate Mr. W

The Do-24's were active again, they hit a transport and a sub
A damaged destroyer that took part in yesterdays bombardment of Soerabaja was hit by Martins and sank.

In the Coral Sea the remaining 2 transports were sent to the bottom. They're now racing south by east in an attempt to flush out more stragglers.
Wobbly is bound to have scattered other shipping all over the place - I hope.

The last troop convoy is currently loading in Manila and will head for Singapore. The 2 divisions in Bangok are now fully rested and have started to march north.
2 para regiments are also on the move. I will have to create a plan for the invasion of India and assign targets to the various divisions and HQ's.

Cvl Zuiho now down to 43 sys damage - she got 6 weeks to complete repairs. 1st of April is the date that I've set.
Should be possible to wrap things up both in the DEI and South Pacific by then.

Great AAR...
What bases in India are you thinking about invading? Are you planning on holding them awhile or just hitting and leaving?

Thx Madflava, makes it much more interesting to write this AAR when ppl find it interesting

I'm posting some comments about the initial phases of the invasion of India in todays post. (see Situation Report)
Initially I'm coming to stay! If I can destroy the British presence in India, a lot will have been achieved and it should not be necessary with a too heavy garrison.
If I can't manage this, a staged withdrawal towards Mandalay will be conducted.

Situation Report

My bombers are finally inflicting ground casualties at Rangoon. The AVG has been rendered impotent again, and attacks will continue. (The AK Eidsvold is surely a tough ship, must have taken dozens of bomb hits and refuses to sink. Shows how difficult it is to get rid of us norwegians

Tjilitjap fell easily enough, and I'm now marching north towards Batavia.
Dutch bombers are still operating from the southern Java and have become quite skilled.

Looked at the map over India and is considering to land 6 divisions at Diamond harbour and then march on Calcutta and Dacca.
After that, the road to the hinterland will lay open. Colombo/Trimcomalle are also on my 'most wanted list'. So I'm considering to land 2 divisions here
after the initial landings. If this isn't enough, I will supplement with troops from the mainland.

The remaining brigades and regiments will stay at Singapore, Java and Manila as garrison units while the 2 divisions currently engaged in Java will both go
to the South Pacific were they will attempt to capture Port Moresby. A divsions from China will be moved south to the Phillippines in a couple of months.
I don't expect to conduct continued offensive operations in China after that.

This is the broad scope of my plan; Any comments?

I like it... I might be inclined to skip Trincomalee and Columbo unless there's a big risk of air attack on convoys up to Chandpur (once Chandpur is captured). Seems like 2 divisions on that island is a waste - Can you capture it with less? Remember, you're going to have those nasty Brit Divs arriving overland to attack your front lines in a few months and 2 divisions in reserve on the mainland might come in handy...

Just my two cents though.

Situation Report

Incredible, my sub got torpedoed by an escorting destroyer after torpedoing a british cruiser. Well, at least non of the depth charges hit

Bali fell easily enough, and I will continue south through Timor and finish Phase 1.
I'm still destroying SBD's at Batavia, and tomorrow advanced elements will move into the base.

The Do-24s hit the cl Kino today..fortunately only a few fires and sys damage.
Catalinas spotted my carriers sw of Noumea, so no more surprises there..but there are others!-)

A full strength Zero and Betty Daitai moved south to Saipan and will continue on to Rabaul.
Construction engineers will move to Lae, then Oscars and shorter range bombers will start hitting Port Moresby.

The biggest problem with the ground combat model is the lack of shades... I attack and get 80-1 odds and the enemy takes no more losses than I do. I isolate and siege starving enemy troops, getting 24-1 odds and nothing happens.
If I get 2 or 3-1 odds when attacking an enemy base, the entire place including the cooks and mess boys surrenders!?

Situation Report

Again the sun shined on the Empires war efforts!
I'm meeting increasingly stiff resistance in China and on Java, but this was expected.
Reinforcements are moving towards both Sian and Malang.

Do-24's hit 2 more transports today! They have now hit more than 20 ships...
In return my bombardment group escorts finds and sinks the Dutch sub SS-KXI.

Yesterday Wobbly told me that he was glad he had spotted my carriers again, and that he was rather
confident that I wouldn't find anymore targets Weeell, not entirely so: Car Div 3 finds a big convoy escorted by 2 destroyers to the east of Canton Isl. Both destroyers and 2 transports are reported sunk while 5 others ships are hit.
They will be finished tomorrow.

So I revealed the existence of Op. Paranoia to Wobbly, and I can almost hear him curse all the way up here! I love this game.

The invasion group that's heading for Canton Isl. will take almost another week to get there, but as reinforcements arrived at Truk, I prepared 2 new troop convoys. One is moving base, construction and AA units to Lae while the other is loading shock troops, base, construction and AA units for Espiritu Santo.

I don't think it will be possible to keep these bases, but it will certainly be a pretty convincing diversion. If Wobbly doesn't take it serious, I will make it so. By basing long range search planes, fighters, naval bombers and coastal guns here - it will be possible to make it a lot more difficult to keep New Caledonia, Fiji, NZ and Oz in supply.

On todays situation map I'm proud to present Operation Hangover
As you can see it's a rather simple plan:

1. Rangoon is going to be isolated and attacked. I think Wobbly will try to retreat south. If so, paras will try to prevent this.
2 crack divisions, 2 para regiments, 1 engineer regiment, 1 AA unit + artillery units will take part in this operation. Reinforcements can be brought in from Singapore if needed.

2. A strong invasion fleet will sail directly for Chandpur, unload 6 divisions and supportive elements. I'm gathering most of the Combined Fleet and its transport fleet for this move. I got more than 250 troops ships at Singapore.

The plan is to land in force and overwhelm the opposition. After occupying Chandpur the army will march against Dacca, Calcutta, Diamond Harbor, Jahmshedpur and Asansol.

4 of the KB carriers as well as all the light ones will provide landing support and cover the troop ships! Naval bombers and Zeros operating out of Tavoy, Moulmein and perhaps even Rangoon, will also provide cover and bomb Allied ships, bases and ground troops.

When this has been completed, India and Burma will be joined together under a greater Indo Burmesian protectorate.
It will then be possible to threaten inland China, march further NW into India, blokade/invade Trimcomalee/Colombo.

This should make it possible to get enough points to perhaps get an auto victory.
If not, I will abandon as much territory as necessary and march slowly back towards Burma when it gets too hot and it becomes necessary to redeploy for a defensive campaign in the Central Pacific by mid 1943.

Situation Report

It seems like my men in China and on Java are at the end of their ledgers...fatigue is running high and I constantly have to add troops and keep up the bombardment runs to make progress. I'm in no hurry though, no enemy air or sea units remains in the area.

The fluke encounter with the heavily damaged Achilles surprised me today. A small convoy tailing the main invasion force heading for Canton Isl was even more surprised! The good thing about this is that Car Div 1 now gets an opportunity to finish the Achilles off. She's probably heading for Pearl and repairs. The Shokaku and Zuikaku are in this very moment turnin 180 degrees and will try to locate her. They will only spend one day searching though.

Only the transport carrying the construction unit was damaged, and the base force unit is fine.

Wobbly will most likely ask himself what a troop convoy is doing out there...and then he will suspect that I got something fishy going again. And that is of course 100% correct - but that's ok, a decoy mission is supposed to get a lot of attention.

Car Div 3 will head south by east to search the area east of Canton Isl while Car Div 2 will sweep south of New Caledonia and head towards Fiji. Car Div 1 will remain with the troop convoy all the way to Canton Isl. This should enable me to cover most of the area between Palmyra and New Caledonia.

The 3 Carrier Divisions will search out enemy shipping while giving cover for planned landings at Canton Isl and Espirito Santo. I'm not sure when I will be ready to invade PM as the troops that will have to perform the operation are still heavily engaged in Java and will have to rest before they are ready for new missions.

The other problem is that I'm not sure I got enough shipping to move them until after the conclusion of Operation Hangover.

Hm...decisions decisions, I will have to think this over. 35 Betties and 26 Zeros have now reinforced Truk and an additional base force has been unloaded at Rabaul. I will 'anchor' my southern pincer here and wait like a spider in his web for something favorable to happen!

Situation Report

Wobbly certainly have had a lot to cry about...so he certainly deserved a break! Today saw the first serious rebuff for the Empire in the war as the Allied carriers Saratoga and Hornet finds the Soryu and Hiryu of Carrier Division 1 east of Canton Island.

I knew that 2 or 3 Allied carriers were present in the Indian Ocean, leaving only a few in the Pacific. I must admit that I have not checked when the Allied carriers becomes available in WitP, and since I've not played the game as the Allies yet - I did not have much intel to work on. I feel that this provides a better degree of historical accuracy. I'm a kind of machochist and likes a high level of realism ...and that also means that I got to pay the price now and then.

So my weakest Carrier Division is found with CAP set to 30% - I usually prefer to have a lot of Zeros to escort my strikes since. Today this was a double edged sword as all my 3 counterstrikes flew without an escort and got slaughtered anyway

The Soryu is hit by dozens of bombs and sinks while the Hiryu is in a very bad shape: 80 sys damage, 30 flood and 44 fires. I did not scuttle her but ordered her to sail due West. 2 destroyers were left on an escort mission.

The 2 undamaged ca's are ordered to sail West at flank speed to catch up with Car. Div 1 and add to its escort.
A damaged destroyer will move towards the Allied carriers, so will 2 blazing tankers while an undamaged escort vessel also will head West towards the invasion convoy heading for Canton Island.

What annoyed me the most was my inability to infilct causalties to neither the Allied cv's or their bombers. They still retain 90% of the strike capability.

I'm not in a dilemma: Car Div 1 with the powerful Zuikaku and Shokaku are only 1 day away from Canton Island while Car Div 3 with the Akagi and Kaga are just east of Noumea. My plan was to join them east of Canton Island, so again Wobbly timed his strikes with maximum effect.

I only got 2 choices:

1. I can abandon the invasion of Canton Island and preserve my carriers for the upcoming invasion of India. This operation got priority.
2. Try to engage and sink the Allied carriers and continue with my invasion of Canton Island. This means that Car Div 1 and 3 will have to move in piecemeal. Not fortunate....

Since the Hiryu is still afloat and not completely lost yet, I decided to give option 2 a try. The damaged ships will get a lot of attention from the Allied carriers tomorrow - Wobbly is so starved of success that he will not resist the opportunity to put another nail in my coffin for old times sake

At flank speed Car Div 1 could be in range and react towards the Allied carriers tomorrow. Then it will be possible to return the favor and even the score a bit.

However, if the result of tomorrows operations are not favorable or indecisive - I will turn around, join Car Div 1 and 3 together and head home, disband the diversionary invasions of Canton Island and Espiritu Santo. This would also mean that the invasion of PM will also have to be postponed at best.

Well, this certainly upped the ant a bit! The days ahead will be decisive....

In China I'm moving in more troops to Sian. 27 Helens and 36 Lilys have been moved in from Japan and will start a limited air offensive to weaken the defenders.

In Java I'm preparing to destroy the remaining Dutch units and capture the last 2 bases there. Todays bombardment of Malang was highly successfull, and another heavy force will hit Batavia tomorrow.

Todays situation map shows the forces involved in the first carrier vs carrier battle in the war:

Mmmm, we must have a name for this....

The Battle of the Phoenix Islands!

Appropriate, in that Wobbly is attempting to rise from the ashes based on his victory here!

Situation Report

Lots of surprises as a third US carrier pops out and starts bombing my retreating carrier escort!
The presence of no less than 3 carriers is a serious development and means that there are 2-3 of them in the Indian Ocean with another 3 in the Pacific. I'm outnumbered!!!

I'm not going to risk my remaining cv's as I need them for Operation Hangover. This means that Car Div 1 is turning about and will try to cover the retreating troop convoy. Don't think Wobbly knows about this one, but he sure knows that I got 2-4 cv's somewhere to the West of Canton Island. Thunderstorms are coming and this suit me well.

Tomorrow the retreating cruisers will join Car Div 1 and head West. Car Div 2 just refuelled and is heading flank speed towards Car Div 1. Will take 3 days for them to join forces though....

The only potential problem is that Wobbly may catch up with my transports if he continue due West, but I don't think he'll do so. So I'll move my cv's west of the convoy and see what happens. If an opportunity arises, I will pound on the single US cv - but I'd prefer not to.

The troop convoy is carrying 8500 men that will now head for Lunga to build a base there instead. The convoy that was planned for Espirity Santo has been diverted to Kwajalein. A third convoy has almost reached Lae. So I'm already preparing solid defenses in the South Pacific, allowing me to move the carriers to the Indian Ocean for some time.
(I don't like the thought of 3 US cv's harrassing my supply lanes, but a strong Zero and naval bomber presence will hopefully keep the menace at bay.)

I'm more convinced than ever that India is the only sensible way to go. I'm less dependent on the outcome of a few balanced carrier battles here than in the South Pacific. My Zeros have had a bad tendency of staying home when I engage Wobblys carriers. (It happened in UV earlier on.)

It seems like Java is going to fall any day now, so I'll simply try to wrap it all up and continue with my preparations for Phase 2.

Situation Map: The appearence of a 3rd US carrier!

Situation Report

Bad weather around Canton Island and the Allied cv's are not spotted. Wobbly tells me that there are 2 cv's in the Indian Ocean and 3 in the Pacific. Hm, I've destroyed 100 SBD's on the ground at Batavia alone. Must have received reinforcements.

It will be another 2 days before the remaining 4 cv's of the KB can be rejoined. Since weather is bad and the Allied bird farms are still some way behind, I should be able to make it. Then I will provide cover for the convoy heading back towards Guadalcanal. I've split the convoy in 2, so together with the replenishment group there are now 3 tf's.

Car Div 1 was also strengthened with 2 ca's and 1 dd - the surviving escorts from Car Div 3.

Todays big bonus was the blow delivered by Car Div 2! 10 ships were hit and 4 sank immediately. If I'm lucky the rest will also go down. The 51st Aviation Regiment took heavy casualties and are now swimming with the sharks!
That was a dish that tasted really good right now!

In the DEI the Do-24s continues their crusade and sinks a patrol craft!-(

I will have to rest the troops at Batavia for a few days - high fatigue makes it difficult to reduce the last forts.
Reinforcements are marching in from the south, and I can wait a few more days.

The first stage of Operation Hangover will soon commence. Recon flights will fly over the Allied bases in Burma while an the army prepares to march on Rangoon. The bombing missions will intensify to reduce Allied ground strength.
