Its a sad day:

http://historyishere.joeuser.com/index.asp?AID=34690

A lot of major markets aren't going to show it tonight because of the fear of fines.

Refusing to broadcast SPR for fear of governmental retribution is truly "political correctness" run amok.

I regard this as censorship. And censorship is the little sister of the inquisition.
Honestly, I don't understand the trouble about nipplegate.
Or the kiss between Britney Spears and Madonna.
But when they go after SPR, it becomes really serious.....

Doesn't seem like people use much common sense today.

I don't really thinkthe affiliates feared the FCC as much as they wanted to provoke people to debate..
I have lived long enough to see the boundaries crossed and gratuitous crap replacing "entertainment".
The network itself did not "fear" anything, and was likely feeling the showing to be a patriotic act.(The film is historically correct on so many levels, and the violence is not out of context, ergo,it is appropriate for the program).
The affiliates which chose to not air the film, may have other "irons in the fire",and all they had to do was plead that they were only showing the networks endorsed programming.
The major hits (financially directed by the FCC),were in my opinion long over due,and anybody who knows me would never think me a prude..Please consider the "shock jocks" are pandering (verbally and too often caustically) on an open airwave where children can hear there pollution..
I have no sympathy for these guys,(and maybe I'm jeolous they make millions just by voicing their opinion over the air,*spiced* with profanity and innuendo..)
There is no validity to people saying "Well, just turn off the radio",not with the advent of transister radios in my lifetime, and children able to tune in from anywhere outside the home.Censorship?.O.K..I'm for it,because I want to be responsible for what my kids hear, not some panel,(or church,etc)..
Saving Private Ryan however is a *war film*,and it is expected it will have violence, etc, whatever goes with the anguish and horrors of war.
Like the Civil War general said,"It is well war is so terrible, lest we enjoy it too much".I feel it is correct that film did not try to soft-peddle the historical event, especially not on MY day,(Veteran's Day).
As a matter of respect,I want people, civilians in general to see the terrible acts of war, because soldiers do not make wars, civilians do,and I prefer civilians be aware of the sacrifices their warriors have made.
I think it a disgrace these T.V. affiliates chose to make this film the platform for their plea of "civil rights harassment/censorship.."
Shame on them.......

I don't call it censorship nor do I call it political correctness.

I call it offensive.

I have nothing but verbal abuse of the most angry sort to offer any worthless scum that would support such an action.

I would gladly tell any person or organization they were no longer welcome in MY country, a country MY grandfather fought for on D-Day.

This is the most despicable act I can think of.

It's the ultimate act of ingratitude.

It sends the message "maybe we should forget".

Saving Private Ryan was awarded the Normandy Medal by the men it portrayed.

I don't need "joe not worthy to live in my country" and his disgusting whining crying to a fickle FCC saying the movie was not appropriate.

They can all leave now, I hereby revoke their citizenship by one vote.

I am verry sorry ve do not have a procedure for common sense.

Remember the two most common elements in the universe hydrogen and stupidity.

You guys are gonna love this--the local ABC affiliate didn't show SPR;instead, they broadcast "Die Hard". I kid you not.

WCHS-TV8, serving the Charleston-Huntington WV area. Other than Monday Night Football, I watch very little of their programming anyway. Of course, one of my sisters works as an ad sales rep for a competing station (the local NBC affiliate, WSAZ), so I already have a built-in bias.

Many good points here. I agree that the powers that be would rather NOT have the average joe start to understand combat. They should all go back to major network news for the lastest "smart bomb' video or some fine 'embedded reporting'.

Anyway, big thanks to all vets past and present.

"Saving Private Ryan" is a vulgar, violent film. Broadcasters and the FCC agreed a long time ago that "family time" broadcasting should not contain either of those elements.

Now, in the guise of some paean to "veterans" on an arbitrarily-designated day, this film somehow becomes sacred ground. It has nothing to do with veterans. It is an attempt by Steven Spielberg (refusing edits) to coin money and fame out of movies.

Keep the effenheimer and mutilated bodies off broadcast TV, willya? If I have the impulse to see that, I'll find it for myself - where children are not present.

Now, let's get back to discussing wargames ... I'm surprised that this thread hasn't been locked up by now ... or would that be impermissible censorship?

SPR should have to be viewed by every child, IMO.

The decision to not show this is another classic example of PC gone way too far.

It gets my goat because people say 'children will see it and get upset'. They should buy an instruction manual for their remote control so they can simply turn the channel. But no, the censorship is spread to everyone because they cannot simply change a channel.

Are all the children in bed when the 6 oclock news comes on. Seems there is a hell of a lot more violence tnere then in SPR. Also seems to me if they preempt with die hard 2 they have put something on with a hell of a lot more violence.
