[Another air battle that worries me:
I lost 10 Zeros to 0 Warhawks - are they loosing their edge already? Let's blame it on long range and rookie pilots for now.

Day Air attack on 16th Indian Brigade, at 28,21

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 12
Ki-48 Lily x 9

Allied aircraft
P-40E Warhawk x 11

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 20 destroyed

You might check their fatigue. In my air battle over PM the Zeros were barely able to suppress enemy fighters (mostly Kittyhawks, iirc). Once their fatigue is above 10 they tend to suffer heavily and while they control the sky the first day, they drop like flies the second. I had to rotate several A6M2 and two A6M3 Daitais between Lae, Rabaul and Truk continously and additionally switching between CAP, Escort and Sweep missions...

WhoCares - the Zeros got beteen 8 and 9 fatigue while one group had 10 - but that was after todays full strength sortie.
Lost 17 Zeros to 17 Warhawks and Wildcats today. Afraid it's the low quality pilots that pays the ultimate prize. Disbanded a Daitai today by joining 2 half strength units. The alternative would be even more rookies I'm not going to feed my best pilots into the grinder in India - will save them for the big showdown in the South which I'm certain will come before long.

Situation Report

Indian Ocean

I guessed right, it was the Warspite that was spotted yesterday - the 3 torpedoes that hit should be enough to force
Al to pull the plug - she's still a long way from safety. The Ryujo has almost cut of the leading transports that are fleeing south towards Oz and will close in for a few strikes. The massed search planes of the seaplane tenders will also take part in this effort.

The heavy strike against Jamshedpur was costly, but a 1-1 ratio is better than what I got a few days ago. A deliberate attack has been ordered tomorrow, there are still a lot of defenders left - but 4 units are fleeing NW. Guess my blocking units prevents them from going NE

South Pacific

The raid against Tarawa caused Al to write a rather depressed mail to me, he's afraid I'm coming with more troops. I'm not - but I won't tell him that. The enemy ships fled due west and my bombardment caused 1500 casualties. Another 2 bombardments have been ordered for tomorrow, and the 1st Cruisers Squadron has been told to stay behind to make Al belive I've come to stay. The name of Operation Goodbye & Good Riddance has also been leaked out as part of my psychological warfare effort....

The E-mails between you and wobbly, for some strange odd reason, brings sounds of "tokyo rose" to my ears. Surrender now yankee! You fight, while Joe is home with your wife. Excellent AAR. i continue to be impressed with the India/Burma thrust

Thx Hornblower! The emails between me and Al are really quite peaceful - I've promised always to tell him the truth, but telling only parts of it can provide for rather ambigous interpretations

Not sure I would like to repeat my Indian gambit, it leaves the Empire rather stripped of frontline divisions and reserves.
As soon as people find out that they have to abandon Burma and move reinforcements to India asap - the entire going will become a lot more difficult.

Wobbly is gone over the weekend, so there will be a pause over the weekend!

PZB,

I can see your point in saying that. From now on all the allied players have to at least reasonably consider the “PZB Burma/India trust” as a possibility from there adversary. So a bit of the strategic shock value will be lost. And should Wobbly hold out, whatever this combination was, would be the Key to stopping the trust. or delaying it to the point that opportunities elsewhere would open for the allied player.

As for the current game, nothing ventured, nothing gained.. You might just be able to put Wobbly in such a hole point wise, that he might not see the light of victory. But, then again- and I am sure that I am not stating something that you haven’t thought off- in essence, India has become a mini-Solomon islands in regards to pilot losses, 4 months early. That would worry me..Wobbly may loose the battle, but still win the pilot loss war. I look forward to the next rounds.

Take care - Hornblower

As I have said to wobbly on his side of the thread its really a public service you are both providing.

Teaching all us Allied wannabe supreme commanders as to the reasons why the allies were not more aggressive than we can be in the game.

Until this AAR started I began all my PBEM's by reinforcing Burma.

Over the last few months I have evacuated Burma in all bar one to watch India. (In one just in time to stop my opponents try to do a PZB on me I stopped one invasion at Dacca and another at Diamond Harbour but it was the Burma troops that did the final stopping !!! so thanks for the advance warning of what is possible)

You should also take into account that the Indian gambit could be played out much more efficiently by other players! This was my first WitP game - and I assure you that I didn't get it all a 100% right. My late advance into Burma was caused by stiff enemy opposition at Alor Star. The delay actually played into my hands as Al grabbed the opportunity to strengthen his front in northern Burma.

Pointwise it will certainly be difficult for Al to catch up, but that's nothing compared to the grief of playing the Jap side with nothing but under par assets. The important thing will be to keep a strategic carrier striking force for as long as possible. Only this will be able to keep the US from raiding e.g. the China Sea with a strong cv tf - and this could happen as soon as mid 43 if I doesn't carefully husband my resources.

It seems like Al will be gone for most of this week as well - guess he needs a little breather before continuing the life and death struggle in India. I've really been nasty to him - have to consider my sins....

Andy Mac, I think you're right - holding Burma with more than a few Chinese Corps and odd ends will be difficult without opening your flank completely. I'd still like to see how it would turn out if someone did attempt an all out assault on India with 12+ divisions and the entire Combined Fleet in April 42!

Think I invaded India mainly because of Dell support

As I look at this AAR it makes me wonder what the effect of NOT fighting for Burma will have on the game. Lots of allied players are leaving Burma weak so its falling pretty fast. Does this mean that China gets weaker from lack of supply? Can the Japanese players put more troops into SW Pacific or some other point maybe North OZ if Burma will fall to a division?

By changing the allied defense of Burma you have created implecations for other parts of the map PzB.

Personally the Japanese just captured 12,000 troops in Rangoon Feb 14th 42 but I can't reveal my over all plan for the area just yet.

PZB. Given the temporary succession of hostilities, have you opted to change anything that you were going to do? Or has the time off solidified your strategy. I ask because a number of times I “think” myself out of doing moves that I normally wouldn’t if I didn’t have a day or so to think on it.

I don't think you should overestimate the effect of the Indian gambit! Now as people are aware of the danger, they will also be in a better position to anticipate their opponents move. E.g - one of the really BIG advantages of going against India is that most of Japans ships and divisions ends up around Singapore after finishing off enemy opposition in the DEI.

If you see a lot of ships leaving the theatre and heading south towards Australia, New Guinea or the Solomons...then you should have a pretty good idea about what's up. A massed concentration of Jap forces means that you should probably move out of Burma ASAP!

Personally, I wouldn't abandon Burma - moving in some Chinese and building forts at evey crossroad and base is an excellent way of slowing the Japs down. Malaria will have its effect as soon as they leave Rangoon. If you manage to capture Burma with a single division - then the defender has made a big mistake. I would expect nothing less than an Army would be needed to achieve this. Personally I only got a brigade + supportive units in Burma, and I'm only slowly driving Al's Chinese troops back by feinting flanking movements.

Not sure about what effect cutting Burma of from China got - India got enough supplies, so the Chinks should certainly feel a sting as the Burma Road runs dry

Hm, not really! I've been playing Battles in Normandy - great game btw! Perhaps I needed a little break, but it was a little annoying that 2ndACR also had to put our game on hold though. Been without a WitP turn for 14 straight days now!

Also got a little worried that Al might be feeling the squeeze - in his last email he stated that WitP was a very depressing game that was driving him nutters... Guess that's how any Allied CinC feels after 6 months of relentless pressure So I hope a few weeks off will see him back in fighting shape again.

Much of my strategy is actually based o empty water and a bit of bluff. The Indian gambit ties up a lot of resources, and in reality I'm now at the mercy of the Americans far earlier than I would like. The best I can hope for is a slow advance up the Solomons or a rash landing in the Marshalls - I got a bit of resources here now. Otherwise I will continue to sail around showing the flag when I know that the pesky yankee birdfarms ain't around!

It's all about keeping it all together until I can squeeze the life out of the British Empire and destroy enough enemy troops to win a decisive victory. I hold absolutely NO illusions about how life - or lack off - will be in a pre 1943 era. That belongs under the 'you don't wanna know' category

I guess it would be devastating to put a game in front of your newly wed wife...
They do controll r/w access and permits as well - and as most of us know - it's difficult enough to retain their good grace :p

I'm only playing 2 WitP pbem games, that's as much as I can handle and still give my studies and gf the attention they require. Personally I think it's vital not to take on more games than one can cope with, cause then they'll turn into a burden.

Situation Report

Here's a summary of the situation:

India

It seems like Jamshedpur is about to fall - Wobbly will most likely abandon the city tomorrow. That means that he will have to retreat NNW. I've already leaft the South Seas Detachement at Hyderabad. If the enemy retreats this way, I will dispatch a battlegroup to pursue and destroy the enemy.

The advance continues towards Lucknow - strong enemy air groups have been based here. It's likely that they will fall back towards Dehli and Armadabad to prevent encirclement from the west. 7 divisions are advancing on Bombay, and 4 of these will continue towards Armadabad and Delhi. I want to split the enemy into more managable groups - Calcutta was he11!

I would like to invade Colombo as well, but this has to wait - I simply don't have the 2 division + support available right now.

Didn't see the Warspite today, I think she's been scuttled! 3 torps should be more than enough since the ship already was heavily damaged.

A little dissappointing that only 3-4 ships were sunk today, but the carrier air groups have almost depleted their ammo stores. As I've spent most of the fuel at Trimcomalee, I might have to move the carriers back to Singapore to replenish.
It's really difficult to keep half the fleet on continous operations in the Indian Ocean. Perhaps some R&R is a good idea while the army closes in on Karachi.

China

Ichang is next on my list - when this base falls there will only be 5 enemy bases left.

Central/South Pacific

Heavy bombardments of Tarawa caused another 1250 casualties and destroyed 9 Wildcats on the ground.
The Hiei battlegroup and the escort carrier group are already heading back towards Truk via Kwajalein. The 1st Cruiser Division will hit Tarawa again tomorrow before following suit. I will try to run in some supplies in an attempt to make the Jap troops here hold out a bit longer.

The lack of enemy activity around Tarawa makes me belive than an effort will be made somewhere else - most likely against Shortland or southern Guinea. There's a frenzy of activity in this area as troops, ac and supplies are brought in to
make the area into a fortress! Lae hasn't been hit for a few days, and Rabaul might be next on the list.

The Shokaku and Zuikaku have reached the Phillippines, and will enter Truk in less than a week - then I'll feel much more confident.

Good shootin' Herb

I had hoped it would have been revigorated after a 14 day cease fire...afraid you've tucked it down a few notches again now!-)

I guess it would be devastating to put a game in front of your newly wed wife...
They do controll r/w access and permits as well - and as most of us know - it's difficult enough to retain their good grace :p

It is always devasting to put a game in front of your wive, regardless how long you are married.

Oh men, search your wifes hobbies or even better have some children!

Situation Report

India

It's rather messy in India - troops are marching all over the place. Some are in need of supplies, some are worn out while
others are stuck in the wilderness. I'm holding a fair reserve back around Dacca though. More than 2 divisions can be used to reinforce
a threatened area or move to reinforce a faltering assault.

I'm now moving more troops from Jamshedpur towards Lucknow while a battlegroup is heading into Diamond Harbour. I'm afraid the forts here will
make even 10k troops a hard nut to crack. The 20k Allied troops and 235 vehicles that moved out of Jamshedpur will be shadowed by a bde. It will take a long
time for them to get anywere without supplies.

There are a lot of enemy aircraft at Lucknow - I moved 120 bombers and 75 fighters into Dacca, but I'm not going to order them to strike at long range. Casualties
have been very high. Base forces are currently waiting in transports at Chandpur, they will move into Diamond Harbour as soon as it falls.

The battleships at Trimcomalee are sailing towards Panaji - they will hit Bombay when my army arrives in a week or so.
All of the carriers in the Indian Ocean are preparing to disengage with the exception of the light carrier Ryujo. They will sail to Singapore since there is no more fuel
at Trimcomalee.

I found a bug I got a base force at Panaji, but the unit is gone even though the base report says there are ca 1500 troops and 18 aviation support available.
My search and recon squadrons are going into reserve, and I had to move the single operational Emily and recon ac out today. (See picture below) Has this type of bug
been reported before, or should I post it?

Central/South Pacific

I've decided not to turn back to face the US tf that moved into Tarawa today. There might be enemy cv's on the way...and I don't want to fight that far
away from my home bases. I've achieved more than I hoped for, so I'm heading home. Recon shows few enemy troops at Lunga - but there are plenty of
ac - so I'm considering a bombardment run supported by carriers in a week or so!

The force is really gone? I thought there was aproblem with filters somewhen. Maybe you have a version problem. Can you get the baseforce when you click at the base and then on the icon under the map screen?

The Base Force is there, cause the base states 1500 troops and 18 aviation support - BUT there isn't anything to click and I don't have any filters or wrong version installed. I now got 14 search planes in repair/reserve status...annoying.

Wobbly was annoyed that he didn't get to my bombardment force off Tarawa today..and the units that retreated into Diamond Harbour didn't exactly help..!

has the units in Jamshedpur retreated to Diamond Harbour - I mean that

Situation Report

India

Spent some time looking over all my units in the Far East today and shifted some airgroups.
I don't want to use my precious Betties and Nells to hit the Allied armies in India, so most of them have been moved back
to Singapore as a strategic reserve. 54 went to Java, the enemy transport fleet is now pretty close to Sumatra and Java, and
several air groups including recon, dive and torpedo bombers have been ordered to seek and destroy as many enemy ships as
possible before they reach security in Oz.

I've also moved most of my air transport fleet back to Rangoon and Singapore. 32 long range transports are left in Bangalore -
got a para unit that might come in handy here.

I need more Zero's - got a $hitload of useless Nates - the Oscar II doesn't appear until 01/43 - all the extra research has been to no
avail 60+% of my skilled Zero pilots are in the South Pacific, but I'm getting a new A6M3 Daitai in 3 days that will go to India.
The plan is to gather all my Zeros and army bombers for a showdown against the RAF - and then bomb the enemy bases heavily.

Hoping to cut down some Wellingtons tomorrow - a heavy LRCAP is ordered over my ground units south of Lucknow.

In the Indian Ocean The Akagi and Kaga have expended their ac supplies and are low on fuel - heading back towards Singapore.
The same is the case with almost a dozen subs...they need some R&R and will retire to their bases. They've not intercepted many transports..
dissappointing. My 2 damaged battleships and 2 cruisers left Trimcomalee today and are heading for Singapore and ultimately Hong Kong
and Shanghai for repairs.

China

Ordered 3-4 divisions to move from Sian and towards the Chinese capital - this is mostly a move to stress Al a bit. I also want to cut off his
retreating units - they're still beating around the bush somewere to the NW.

Central/South Pacific

Very quiet in the South, I wonder what the cunning Kiwi is up to...didn't see any cv's racing back towards Tarawa. Are they still in the Coral Sea?
My defenses around Kwajalein and Rabaul are now very powerful and I'm starting to put reinforcements into Wewak, Shortland and other atolls in the area.
There is also a sizeable reserve at Truk and more troops are on their way including Combined Fleet HQ.

Got 650 polit points available - going to release another regiment from the Kwantung Army soon. If I've managed to sink all the British bb's, Al is going to
get short on polit points soon Does anyone know how often the Tommies have to send back capital ships?
