I can't stop playing this game. I just got it two weekes ago and it seems like I play over and over trying out different strategies on the AI. I gotta admit, it has kicked my ass at times but now I am getting major victories. I just got one at Gaulgamela on my third try. Those elephants are tough! Next I play India. I have been reading the threads of others and they have said it would be a killer.

Any tips?

Kudos to the new guys at Koios! You have a winner here. With all the funky strategies I throw at the individual battles it is still keeping me hooked! My wife won't like you though.

Hint vs Indians, timing and picking your fights while keeping firmly to your mission are critical. Good luck, you will need it!

The most reliable strategy I have discovered for winning the Hydaspes is to use the early turns of the battle to quickly send 5 or so cavalry units supported by slingers along the edge of the mountains toward the east flag, while moving my main force south along the river to the west flag. The job of the units at the east flag is to snatch the objective and retreat as quickly as possible, leading the attacking elephants and chariots north (away from the third flag) on a pointless chase that will last most of the battle... In the west, I immediately attack the Indian cavalry and push them into the river, then position my horse-archers behind my infantry lines and go to work on the Indian left as Alexander and the Greek cavalry move south-east (behind the enemy line) to attack the third flag. This strategy depends on a successful capture of the east objective before the enemy line can advance, but once that is accomplished victory quickly follows...

<<Spoiler warning: If you want to discover how to beat the Indains on your own then don't read the rest below. >>

I divided my cavalry evenly on both wings and had two units of bow backing up my spearmen in the center. I pushed both cavalry wings forward towards the flags as fast as they would go and captured both of the initial flags with no combat. About this time the Elephants tend to split off towards the flanks. (If you stall out you will be overwhelmed. Keep the cavalry moving.) The cavalry then fought their way through/passed around the Indian forces on the flanks. Only about half made it through. On one side I had a unit of horse bow draw off four or five Indian units which was handy. I am sure you can use a decoy to do this on both flanks but I have not tried it yet. Anyways, about this time I advanced the infantry center on to the four or five units that directly opposed them, mainly bypassing them but fighting some. (Again keep moving, to stall is to die.) The cavalry, now behind the Indians, moved from each flank and began attacking the Indian reserve forces stationed around the last flag from either side. After a couple of turns of this the infantry arrived, allowing me out a four way squeeze on the flag defenders and either kill/route them or push them out of the area for the win.

Anyway it was great fun. Every turn key decisions have to madse as what to fight and what to bypass, which units to sacrifice and which units to decoy with, that provides a level of tension and excitement. The key was drawing off the elephants from the center to the flanks, and out running them with the cavalry, then advancing through the weakened center with the infantry to support the cavalry attack on the guards of the third flag. An early attack through the center will fail. If you get bogged down in the west the ambush forces will catch you. Of course I don't claim this is the only way to win. It worked for me though.

I like your strategy notes A_Turtle... I have won the battle using a similar strategy, but I think it is riskier to split your army in half as you did than to send flag snatchers to one side and the main Greek force to the other. I would expect a strategy like yours to yield a faster victory if successful, but with heavier Greek losses than a one-wing attack. One aspect of your battle I really dig is keeping some infantry in reserve, drawing off the enemy left and right wings, then making a charge straight down the center of the map. That rules!!!!!! I will have to remember that trick next time I play a match in India or Gaugamela...

Finally beat those darn Indians with the on wing strategy. Had three of my weakest calvary units charge and get the objective on my left flank. Left some infantry on the left flank to draw off the Elephants and to protect the retreating calvary. Then hit my right flank with everything else and continued to push forward quickly, regardless of the losses. Once the second flag was captured a race to the middle flag with whatever forces on the right flank were not engaged. Left Alexander behind because he seems to be an elephant magnet and a good decoy.
