Accordingly, I authorize General von Falkenhayn to attack with 70 divisions along a thirty-mile front! WE WILL TAKE VERDUN!

Do you really want to take Verdun or just pull the other side into your arty killing ground?

Yes I agree Verdun was NOT supposed to have been taken!

Not originally. But that doesn't seem to have been communicated from Falkenhayn all the way down.

Certainly von Falkenhayn envisioned an attritive struggle "to bleed the French white"; his memoirs state that even after the war, he believed that a favorable 5:2 casualty ratio had been achieved. However, I believe taking Verdun was a "bonus" objective -- the seizure of Verdun would help secure the rail lines parallel to the German front line and stabilize their position in France, as well as deal a huge public-relations blow to the French government.

In any event, this thread has prompted posting on the forum with relation to WW1, so I believe the offensive has succeeded!

And with fewer than 400,000 casualties! Can it get any better?

It could if they issued a call for Beta testers. Hint, hint, hint.
