4/1/1942

The war has been going on now for about a month and things are going the IJA way, this is mainly caused by the TOTAL LACK of opposition from Brigada. Ok, I sunk some of his ships near Pearl by holding back the KB, but there should be PLENTY of materiel for him to throw at me, but NADA.

Today his swordfish bombers on extended strike struck at my battle fleet moving towards Johore Bahru to bombard the LIVING SH*T out of his 10 units caught there by my divisions.
A single 500 pound bomb struck the turret of Fuso and scratched her paint.

I am in dubio about the approach towards Singapore and Johore Bahru. If I attack there and force the 10 units to retreat, they will probably retreat towards Singapore, the only way to stop this is to make Singapore a contested hex……………. This can only be done by landing a force there, but to reduce the “gamelynes” factor of such a move, I would have to land at least a brigade there. This will most likely cost me a sh*t load of transports, and if the counter attack by the Singapore defenders succeeds, a brigade (can ALSO NOT retreat towards a contested hex)…

What to do, what to do…

FINALLY some action

The victorious IJA forces took Kendary, and after the IJN bombardment of Darwin, my opponent put al the available surface combat ships in Darwin in a sb tf to stop another bombardment force. The resulting naval battle bloodied both sides. After both forces disengaged the KB struck the surviving allied forces with a devastating blow. (although still on extended strike) Meanwhile my BB bombardment force struck at Palembang, and where counter attacked by allied villdebeast and swordfishes. The IJN LRcap force was NOT present on the AM turn (the responsible commander will be send to the western front) and ISE got hit by a single torpedo (20 sys damage, 5 flood damage and 14 fire damage). The other allied air strikes where all intercepted by fighters and no damage was done. Near Darwin the final chapter of the battle was written by SS S-41, putting 2 torpedo’s into already stricken CA Nachi, sinking here…………. The families of the Nachi’s crew will be notified that their family died for the greater glory of the empire……
Tomorrow more on the Darwin chapter………

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/11/42

A very surprising day today, the IJN forces keep the pressure up on Darwin. After 3 days of relentless air attacks, Brigada decided to run the gauntlet trough the blockading INJ forces. The first TF was intercepted during the night by a IJN destroyer squadron and severely damaged. At dawn THE KB IS IN A BAD WEATHER HEX and no strikes are flown against the retreating taskforces (grrr), Only bombers from Amboria fly mission against the allied TF’s.

Night Time Surface Combat at 35,83 (and subsequent bomber attack)

Japanese Ships
DD Akigumo
DD Kagero
DD Isokaze
DD Shiranuhi
DD Urakaze
DD Hamakaze

Allied Ships
PG Tulsa, Shell hits 12, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
MSW Finch, Shell hits 8, and is sunk
MSW Whippoorwill, Shell hits 2, and is sunk
AK Beatrice, Shell hits 4, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
AP Buyskens, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage sunk
AK Liran, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage sunk
AP Pijnacker Hordijk, Shell hits 2, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
AP Van Imhoff, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage sunk
ML Rigel, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage` sunk
DD Van Ghent, Shell hits 9, and is sunk

Even one of the much hated American subs got nailed in Darwin with a 800 kg AP bomb
And should have theoretically have NO Chance IN HELL of surviving that hit.

allied Ships
SS S-39, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Then the gods turn unfavourably towards the IJN. A imperialistic sub penetrated the IJN ASW screen and put TWO torpedo’s into AKAGI.
FOR THE SECOND TIME ON TWO DAYS a capital ship has been hit by DETONATING MK 14 torpedoes. She “only” has 20 sys/30 flood and 27 fire damage and should live to fight another day (if only my Japanese damage control wasn’t so CRAPPY)

THE COMMANDER OF THE ASW SCREEN has been keelhauled multiple times along the longitude axis of CA Aoba………………………

The KB has been ordered to withdraw, the allied taskforces are fleeing Darwin and tomorrow the G3’s and G4’s at Amboria will have a final field day attacking them before they should be out of range.

I would like to thank Brigada (my PBEM opponent ) for giving me this wonderful DARWINIAN feasting opportunity ……….

As the IJN disengages from the Darwin attack, a squadron of cruisers was left behind to cover their retreat ( "somebody" set them to CRUISE instead of FULL speed) and they got nailed by a parting air attack from Darwin.
CA Myoko ate a torp from a beauford and must go to dry-dock with 30 sys and 25 flood damage. In the end the attack on Darwin was a success, but cost the IJN a CA and a DD (sunk) and one CV and CA damaged ( both 30 or so sys damage). The net result is hard to guess, but an estimate by Japanese intelligence states that the attack on Darwin cost my opponent dearly, at least 30 ships where sunk, including the confirmed sinking of 4 cruisers, 6 destroyers and 1 sub…. Damage done to the remaining ships must be substantial.

The KB and other major fleet units are now withdrawing to regroup AND REFUEL !! (supplies and logistics are a nightmare playing as Japan).

The major battles in the Philippines are almost done, and preparations are being made to attack Singapore and the rest of the SRA. I am already scraping every available AA unit Japan has together to use them in the defence of my "liberated" recourses. Especially Kendari is vulnerable from air attacks by B17’s from Darwin and will get about 6/7 AA units to defend them………..

SINGAPORE FALLS.....................

After putting up a pathetic resistance, the last of the 39218 defenders of Singapore are marched of into nearby Burma to work on the local railroad, just another day in the glorious IJA.

Now that my main targets are “ liberated” by my valiant forces, I plan to base hop my way down to Java. To take it in another month or so..

Further on the IJN made A “suplise” attack on a allied naval taskforce near Wellington , new Zealand. The imperial carrier KAGA, had been lurking in the south pacific for the last 30 days, waiting to catch an allied convoy. Today, one was caught in the nets of the IJN. As the strike was made at extended range, the enemy ships where only bombed, tomorrow I will deliver them the coup de grass.

The death toll on allied ships cought in my Darwin attack keeps rising, I keep getting sinking reports from al over the place.........

In the last 8 days since my last AAR, nothing spectacular happened. Sank 3 Dutch and 1 yank subs near Amboria, and lost a MSW to a sub in return………

More to come

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/24/42

Today the imperial forces invaded Kuching (north/west Borneo) to gain another fighter base, tomorrow my troops will drive out the pathetic and disorganized Dutch defenders (3 times bombarded with 7 BB's and 7 ca's will do that to you.) KAGA continued her rampage near Wellington, attacking and gravely damaging 9 AK's fleeing from Wellington. Unfortunately I could not finish them of because KAGA is at ZERO mission points (oeps) and is therefore heading home at full speed to re supply. In the mean while I am preparing my troops to occupy the SRA. The occupation and "pacification" of the SRA, ending in the attack on JAVA is from now on called operation “grand theft lollipop", because it will be like taking candy from a baby………..

Again, I am planning 3 major “suplise” actions against my opponent. The last 3 “suplise” actions where highly successive for the IJN and highly damaging for my opponent. For operational security I can not mention the details of thise operations (the enemy could be watching), but, if the dice roles are at my side, these “suplise” operations will hurt the allied cause greatly…..

The more I read the more it sounds like a slaughter rather than a game

It would be nice to give your opponent some respite, wouldn't it?

... well ... maybe not

As an Allied fanboy I a bit depressed

Well, Brigada is a human player (I think) but he has not displayed many (IF ANNY) innovative moves.
OK, it is his first PBEM game, but this is also MY first PBEM game, so.

If you hang around, my upcomming "suplise" actions will also be a treat............

What's up in China?
Could you post a map?
The more I play the more I find China interesting, especially for air war.

Let me ask you again: be nice with Brigada!

I seem to understand that he is not bombing you from Chungkin, is that so?

Are you bombing his resources in Chungkin?

From where did you launch the massive air strike on Mandalay? (You bombed him to stone age )
Did you use multiple airfields or did you mass everything in one place?

In china things are VERY quiet as far as airpower is concerned, Brigada is not using the Chinese air at al, and I have only a VERY limited air force presence there (some Ki51's, kI27's and some recon forces).

I made the strike on Mandalay strictly from Rangoon, it is a risk putting al my eggs in that basket but Brigada is not flying recon planes into Burma (or China by the way), so the chances of him finding out my attack plans where virtually nil (this operation took little under 2 weeks to prepare as I had nil air support in Rangoon 2 weeks ago). I plan to make 2 more strikes at Mandalay to kill as much fighters as possible on the ground, and then get the hell out of there…..

Also we made the agreement NOT to do nightbombing (exept naval attack), unless it is done by specialised NIGHT bombers and bombing me from Chunking in daylight would be a bad move for his bombers

I partially disagree on this.
If he transferred some British and/or US air assets to China he could bomb your resources and HI in China.
I believe you have agreed not to night bomb ports or airfields, but city attack is open, right?

You need resources and HI even more than he does. If he moved Hurricanes (and/or AVG) in Chungkin he could defend the airfield and bomb you. With the AVG even in daylight. Well, at least that would make you a bit unhappy .
I told you I'm an Allies Fanboy

At the same time if you bombed Chungkin he would loose some precious supplies, the thing most badly needed by the Chinese army, especially once you close down the Burma trail.

In Birmania it's mainly an air battle 'per se', but in China you both get to smash down important resources.

You see that everybody thinks night bombing is bugged?

BTW, If he puts some Us or Brit bombers at Chungking he will quickly run out of supplies in the whole theatre. China cannot efford to have a lot of Air power ( except perhaps for some fighters) 'cause this will suck out all the pricelss supplies.

Not 'everybody', game designers seem to like it

Sorry Willie it's an ongoing debate we have

You can airlift supplies to China ... wait and see

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/01/42

3th day of Mandalay attacks, the allied airplane losses are getting less and less, but there should still be 12 P40b's left there (day 1 I took out 33, day 2 I took out 19, day 3 I took out 8, so a total of 60 destroyed (72 -60 = 12 left)

The base should be almost empty now.
Today one of my subs near the west coast got attacked by a daundless, so Brigada finally put his carriers to sea. Also lost a sub to 4 US DD's in the middle of the ocean ???. Must have intercepted it's location by its radio transmissions. It actually got hit by DC's in a deep water hex and sank like a brick (who says that Allied ASW is NOT over strenght)........

ASW attack at 121,59

Japanese Ships
SS I-170, hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
DD Clark
DD Jarvis
DD Ralph Talbot
DD Helm
DD Walke

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 3 and 4 feb. 42

ANOTHER "SUPLISE" action by the IJN today. IJA UNITS LAND AT JAVA.

Today 5 IJA divisions landed in Java on the base west of Batavia , the conquest of the island has begun, allied air units put up a fierce resistance but are intercepted by fighters most of the time, only to turn into sparkling fireworks falling out of the sky for the victorious IJN. Today and yesterday the IJN had a field day shooting down allies "turkeys", this battle will therefore be named "JAVA TURKEY SHOOT".

In the meanwhile a Japanese BB squadron has been bombarding Batavia to great effect. In two days of bombardment over 2500 Dutch casualties where reported with no damage to our own ships. Allied swordfish torp. bombers made an extended strike and hit a APD with a 500 lbs bomb, causing medium damage. Another strike by 2 martins put a single 250 lbs bomb on BB Haruna, scratching her paint......

in two days of fighting the allies lost 45 fighters, and 18 bombers
own losses where minimal , only 4 bombers where lost.........

After a BORING weekend without ANNY WITP turns, the game is on again. This was the usual weekend of waiting for Brigada's turn, with did't show up. Does it mean that I have got a small PBEM problem if I watch my inbox every 45 minutes and am a bit disapointed every time there is no reply ?????. Well it appeared that Brigada had been waiting the entire weekend for MY turn , with I send last friday already

well I decided that YAHOO f*ucked up and send him my last turn again and we are back on track...........

The landing on Java continues, IJA troops secured Merak today and are preparing to march to Batavia. Batavia had it's third day of BB bombardment (WITHOUT RESUPLYING THE FLEET !!) and another 600 enemy troops kicked the bucket.

Today a small miracle happened, one of my subs of Pearl attacked a ASW TF today, scored a hit on a DD, AND GOT AWAY UNHARMED , I better not let Ron hear about this........

In china things are getting interesting, Brigada send ALL chinese units out to play. will post a map tomorrow.
