Are ther group formations? I am thinking of, for instance, battalions in march column, or sevearl battalions forming a single square

Large squares - up to full divisional squares - were a feature of successful tactics against the Turks and so would be a good addition. However, these would probably be very difficult if not impossible to implement as they would be larger than the 100 yard hexes. Also the very limited use of them might not be worth the programming time necessary to implement them.

I can remember the fun in the Battleground series where you might have a few battalions in a hex, then necessarily try to get them all into square with one or more failing causing a mess in your line.
