Operation Great Dragon consisted of two separate but related operations 1-Operation Pink Dragon, the invasion of Buin, which was quite successful, and 2- Operation Golden Dragon, the simultaneous invasion of Shortlands. Golden Dragon was delayed by the Japanese attempted invasion of Vella Lavella. The units assigned to Golden Dragon were nearby, and were able to repulse and destroy the invading Nip force. Later they were tasked to actually invade Shortlands, with the support of the 3rd USMC Paratroops

11/18/42 His carriers are still floating about between Rabaul and the Marshalls. Waiting for something surely. Otherwise nothing new to report. The mandatory raid on Akyab, and the mandatory raid on Buin that, this time, went unintercepted, because the piolets were plaing baseball at the time, and could not be bothered.

The Hiei Kirishima BB force appeared last night at Shortlands. Aside from bombarding the beachhead, it intercepted the last APD in the region, that had delivered supplies to the beachhead. We regret to report that it sunk. This exercise however was not entirely without cost. The retreating BB TF came under heavy air attack and BB Kirishima was hit twice. One of the bombs did some damage, although the other hit the heavy armor and not much damage was reported from that one. His carrier force has now turned southeast and seems to be trying to intercept the transports in the area. These have already been ordered out of harm's way. The Dept of the Navy has provided this (censored) map to illustrate to our readers the tactical situation on the Eastern Solomons

His carriers savaged a tanker TF returning to Frisco, NE of the Santa Cruz Islands. Meanwhile one of his DD TF led by CL Tatsuta tangled with my PTs in Buin. One PT was sunk in exchange for undefined damage to three DDs (why the PTs did not fire torpedoes is beyond me), however the landing craft landed their reinforcements unhindered (except for mines)

Daihonei Situation Report

Confronted with the seemingly inexhaustable numbers of men and supplies the Allies posses in China and India, it has been decided to revert to a defensive strategy on this front. Imperial Japanese Army forces are withdrawing from Lanchow and Myitkyina. These forces will be redeployed, some for our upcomming operation. This should also lessen the supply strain on our ogistics system.
In the Pacific the initaitive has passed temporarily to the Americans. That have conducted several campaigns against Buin, Shortlands and Torokina. Though the Buin attack took the South East Fleet and 8th Army by surprise these commands quickly recovered and expelled the enemy from Shortlands and are presently reinforcing Torokina. The enemy has lost an inordinate number of ships and material in this costly attack that has garnered them little.
While we prepare for the upcomming attack on enemy positions we have continued to conduct our air campaign against troops and airfields at Dobodura, Buna, Buin and Port Moresby. This has involved our best aircraft with our most experienced pilots. Though we pound these positions continually, the American and Australian forces seem to be able to repair them faster than we can drop ordinance.
At sea the balance of power is firmly in our hands. As such we have sent carrier forces deep into enemy held waters to disrupt shipping and forstall enemy build ups in the area. Combat ship losses to date are:

Enemy carrier force, penetrated the SWPAC between Noumea and Oz, and, almost completely, destroyed a transport TF carrying US Div 47. Only a small portion of the 47th will make it to OZ. It will have to remain for a long time there to recover its strentgh

On 12/11 a cruiser TF from Lunga raided an enemy transport TF in Torokina. The enemy lost one transport, several patrol craft, and a second transport damaged. Both sides are suffering an acute shortage of troop transports at this time.

CA Houston TF defended Lautern against an enemy BB attack. The losses were relatively light, considering that Musashi made its appearance, and there were 3 other BBs, against only a few heavy cruisers. CL Hobart was the only ship with significant damage. (I wanted to scuttle it, but every time I tried, the thing crashed to desktop, I hope this is a recent update issue, that will go away) In any case, the enemy was not able to bombard Lautern AF, (which I believe was his main objective, due to the heavy losses that the P38s based there are causing his Zeros in Kavieng) The combat report for that one is lost in cyberspace

The enemy BBs kept farting around the Banda sea for a few days. Several air attacks were unsucessful; subs attack twice, but miss. Eventually one the Beauforts from Lautern, on 12/19 manage to hit Yamashiro with one torpedo.
on 12/20/42 the BB TF approached Lautern with evil intentions. The night was not as perfect as the yellow threat planned; first DD Arashi hits a mine, later on DD Kazeguchi eats a PT torpedo.
In the New Guinea area Dauntless from Buna hit AK Asama Maru and Akasina Maru.
The sub rescue of RAAF base force 101 from Gasmata is finally complete. The submarines may now return to their regular duties.
