It's part of the Google maps interface. The program places one to show you where the locations you've searched for are found.

Well, WhoCares hasn't been around yet, so no... The location seems to fit, though.

yep. It's Truk.

This is the first "what's this" type thread that I've been able to guess.

I guessed before I saw all your responses. Then I checked the google map to see if we were right.

It's Truk.

Well, we'll just have to wait for the drum-roll to see Rainerle get official credit I guess.

Drum-roll:::::::::::::::::::

It's Chuuk.

Regarding the red pin, it marks the spot when you search by coordinates, Search: 7° N, 152° E (you might have to zoom out sometimes)

Wikipedia: Chuuk

PS: Concrats Rainerle

I think they had actually multiple bases across the islands of the atoll. There were ~300 planes based there when the american CVs visited in
Operation Hailstone (1, Agano here?), Operation Hailstone (2), Operation Hailstone (3, german).

Thanks.

So we have been mis-pronouncing it for years. It should be Chuuk NOT Truk!!

Well, that's what the people who live there call it. Of course, when the Japanese were there, their opinions didn't count for much!
