Still playing my first game as Japanese vs. AI (not ready for real opponant)... Now six months into the war and into June '42: - All targets in the SRA, Philippines, N.Guinea are taken, most with little damage to infrastructure. Some straggler allied forces are still in the jungles and being used for airforce training. - In Burma: Rangoon, Mandalay and Akyab are taken, forces are pushing north. Closing down allied airfields in Bangladesh. Not sure if pushing into India is worth it. - Pushing Chinese around handily, using additional forces freed from garrison duties by temporarily using some naval infantry units and extra base forces. - Pacific Islands are taken and bases established in historical places, plus Giligili, Midway, Canton, and Baker Islands. - Allied fleets largely crippled, including sinking two US CVs and 1 each UK CV and CVL, plus damaging two more US CVs. 5 US and UK BBs sunk. - Japanese fleet losses are light, with two CVs and 1 CVL being quickly repaired. No capital ships sunk, and other losses limited to a handful of DD, SS, PC and PG. - Going all-out vs. allied subs. 14 sunk so far. - Japanese merchant losses are light; few sinkings, others damaged and in repair yards. - Allied shipping losses are high. - Japanese industry is humming. Still have 40k HI in reserve and oil and resource stocks are satisfyingly high and rising. Supply reserves are good but would be better had I not gone wild building bases. - I have totally FUBARed my pilot replacement and training program. Ugh! Question is: Is Allied AI an oxymoron? AI use of CVs is not very bright. They come at me piecemeal and I can sink them while sustaining reparable ship damage and light air losses (I muffed the chance to sink the two I only damaged). Will the AI organize effective attacks to take Midway, Canton and Baker from me, requiring me to get moving soonest on effective countermeasures? Or should I just keep going and snatch a few more bases (Luganville? Wallis? Aleutians?), or gobble up Darwin and other N. or W. Australia ports? Port Moresby? Or should I keep my armies going in China and wait to divert large land formations to defense in the Pacific itself? How big should my forces be in places like GiliGili and Lunga? Isolated islands like Canton and Midway?
