Mattremote -> Japanese Strategy? (9/21/2005 7:04:48 PM)

Still playing my first game as Japanese vs. AI (not ready for real opponant)...

Now six months into the war and into June '42:

- All targets in the SRA, Philippines, N.Guinea are taken, most with little damage to infrastructure. Some straggler allied forces are still in the jungles and being used for airforce training.
- In Burma: Rangoon, Mandalay and Akyab are taken, forces are pushing north. Closing down allied airfields in Bangladesh. Not sure if pushing into India is worth it.
- Pushing Chinese around handily, using additional forces freed from garrison duties by temporarily using some naval infantry units and extra base forces.
- Pacific Islands are taken and bases established in historical places, plus Giligili, Midway, Canton, and Baker Islands.
- Allied fleets largely crippled, including sinking two US CVs and 1 each UK CV and CVL, plus damaging two more US CVs. 5 US and UK BBs sunk.
- Japanese fleet losses are light, with two CVs and 1 CVL being quickly repaired. No capital ships sunk, and other losses limited to a handful of DD, SS, PC and PG.
- Going all-out vs. allied subs. 14 sunk so far.
- Japanese merchant losses are light; few sinkings, others damaged and in repair yards.
- Allied shipping losses are high.
- Japanese industry is humming. Still have 40k HI in reserve and oil and resource stocks are satisfyingly high and rising. Supply reserves are good but would be better had I not gone wild building bases.
- I have totally FUBARed my pilot replacement and training program. Ugh!

Question is: Is Allied AI an oxymoron? AI use of CVs is not very bright. They come at me piecemeal and I can sink them while sustaining reparable ship damage and light air losses (I muffed the chance to sink the two I only damaged).

Will the AI organize effective attacks to take Midway, Canton and Baker from me, requiring me to get moving soonest on effective countermeasures?

Or should I just keep going and snatch a few more bases (Luganville? Wallis? Aleutians?), or gobble up Darwin and other N. or W. Australia ports? Port Moresby?

Or should I keep my armies going in China and wait to divert large land formations to defense in the Pacific itself? How big should my forces be in places like GiliGili and Lunga? Isolated islands like Canton and Midway?

Read my current thread about whether or not to go after Noumea. Once you have the perimeter, you have to choose carefully (even against the AI) where you will go next. Make sure to use your Prep Points. I don't move unless they are at 50% or better.

what is AI difficulty level? Historical/hard/very hard.....

Hi,

Take your time to learn playing Japanese against AI before embarking on playing against human players. Don't worry, you will never be short of Allied human opponents.[:D]
With regard to Japanese pilot training system, have you read Mogami's writing in the unofficial WITP guide ? Very good stuff. If not ,click link below :

Playing vs. AI on "Hard."

I did read Mogami's tips on pilot training. But reading it and doing it right are two different things. [8|]

LargeSlowTarget -> RE: Japanese Strategy? (9/22/2005 3:11:14 PM)

AI is a moron. I took PM and now AI keeps launching piecemeal carrier raids and bombardment missions, only to encounter the DeathStar, LBA and strong surface forces guarding PM, with predictable results. Same for subs, AI keeps sending them into areas well-guarded by LBA on ASW. Would like to go PBEM, but due to real-life restraints could only send turns 2-3 turns a month...[:(] . Guess I have to wait for my kids to grow old enough for H2H.
As for Japanese strategy against AI, my $0.02: The defensive perimeter Burma-Timor-PM-Canal-Gilberts-Marshalls-Wake should be established before Zero bonus and amphibious bonus have run out. I believe that further attacks against India, Australia, the South Sea Islands or PH-CONUS will overstretch available forces and especially supplies - moron-AI or not, Japan produces only so much supply per turn. Dig-in and keep Combined Fleet, a sizeable air force and strong LCUs + transports in the Truk area, ready to reinforce any point the AI might choose to attack. Then hit hard, retake lost ground, sit back and wait for the next piecemeal AI move. Rinse and repeat until you get bored or VPs give you auto-victory. PBEM surely is more fun, although the risk of losing is much higher. On the other hand, the AI will never give up trying after having lost a battle, a PBEM opponent might.

Sorry for the rant, work is soooo boring....[;)]

To play as Japan in a Pbem you need to be ready for any sort of psycological(sp?) problem! When you wake up at 6:30 a.m. and play your turn before going to job, i swear that watch 200 Allied 4 engines bombers annihilate your air force and destroy every single precious plane parked on the strip....well...can really really ruin your whole day[;)]
However, against the AI, expand, then dig in, and wait for some turkey shot!

esteban -> RE: Japanese Strategy? (9/22/2005 3:28:24 PM)

Yeah, against the AI, you can just set up a roughly historical defensive perimeter, and wait for the AI to impale itself on your defenses. My favorite was the 4 times in one game that the AI tried to take Guadlcanal with tanker convoys :)

saj42 -> RE: Japanese Strategy? (9/22/2005 3:41:15 PM)

It must be hardcoded - i've had Jap AI tanker convoys trying to retake Wake [:D][:D]
What was more worrying was that my 2 PBY squadrons didn't detect them til the tankers were 1 hex away [:(]

Yes I find it amazing - and very irritating - that the Japanese locate every one of my subs the moment they leave port no matter how far from a Japanese base I seem to be yet a Japanese sub could be sitting outside of Pearl Harbor where I have well over 100 planes doing naval search (at short distance so I'm not stretching my search range) yet I never locate them.

That's why I play my turn at night. Mind you, it can cause you some nightmares (especially involving 4 engine bombers metioned) [:D]

Yamato hugger -> RE: Japanese Strategy? (9/23/2005 1:34:20 AM)

Playing the AI will give you a feel for the mechanics, but it isnt a worthy opponent at any level. But you need to play a few months into the game several times before you are ready to tackle a real opponent. As the Jap, I have a very detailed plan of action. I have a list of every ship, its assignment, and its mission. Same for air units. Same for ground units.

As the Jap you have to be very careful. Anything you do can lose you the game quite suddenly. This does not mean I play a cautious game. I am very aggressive. But I dont do anything without extensive recon before hand. There is nothing more valuable than information. Jap recon planes out-range their allied counterparts, and the Japs have aircraft in some of their subs. Use it.

Make no mistake. In my honest opinion, I do not think this game is winnable as the Japs (against an experienced allied player). But it is fun to play.

Edit: Do NOT assume that a human player will do the same things the AI does!!!

Mattremote -> RE: Japanese Strategy? (9/23/2005 6:07:59 PM)

Heh! I'm not ready for a PBEM game yet. Still figuring out alot versus the AI.

I guess I'll snarf up Port Moresby and Espirito Santo's two bases. Make the Allies come after me there before moving on.

Speedysteve -> RE: Japanese Strategy? (9/23/2005 6:54:54 PM)

Yes AI is good for learning the basics and getting a feel for the game.

I tried to 'spice' things up once by playing a 43 camapign on hard with me as Japanese. Was not challenging to be honest.

In 3 months not 1 aggressive move was made by the AI EXCEPT him sending the odd CV/CVL or CV/CVE TF up near Truk and Rabaul to get pounded by repeated LBA and my remaining CV force[8|]

Only way I could stop this was to move my air away from Truk to Mariana's but that was just silly. Stopped playing it shortly after sinking 3 CV's, 4 CVE's and a CVL.

Steven
