I've well into my first scen 15 and I have had quite a few ships sitting in port, mainly because I didn't know what to do with them.

I looked up the ships in the appendix and I was wondering if some of you might explain their uses and ways to use them to help with the war effort. Some were explained a bit in the manual..but I didn't get a real clear picture.

AD – DESTROYER TENDER - a torpedo reloader only?
AE – AMMUNITION
AG – COLLIER
AGC – AMPHIBIOUS FORCE COMMAND
AGP – PT BOAT TENDER - Does this just reload torps and that is it?
AO – OILER - now I use this one as well with my TK's to transport fuel. is there another role?
AP – TROOP TRANSPORT - I think I remember reading somewhere that you can convert AK's to AP's...but i'm not sure how.
APD – HIGH SPEED TRANSPORT (CONVERTED DESTROYER)
AS – SUBMARINE TENDER
AV – SEAPLANE TENDER
AVD – SEAPLANE TENDER DESTROYER
CS – SCOUT CRUISER
DE – DESTROYER ESCORT
MLE – MINE LAYER TENDER - reload mines, is that all?
PC – PATROL COASTAL – OR SUBMARINE CHASER (173’)
PG – PATROL GUNBOAT
SC – SUB CHASER (110’)

Thanks for the help.

AD and AS will reload Destroyers and Subs. They will also assist the respective ships repair damage while in port. I think they need a minimum level 3 port.

well thats a LOT of questions my friend :) .. where to start , 1 i guess

AD - yes i belive it gives DD torps out at any base size .. has to be 3 otherwise. not a biggie
AE - can resupply ammo to surface groups (mainly AA) but the role gets better in 44? when it can replenish 5 inch or small shells at sea too.
AG- Barge .. short ranged supply hauler
AGP- umm dunno sorry
AO- can be a fuel transporter ( cant carry oil) best used in replenishment TF's .. refules TF's at sea. very useful
AP- troop ship . good at loading inf. bad at loading supplies
APD- good for fast transport missions as they can carry eng vehicles as allies . also good at ASW as Japan .. look at the stats
AS- allows subs to replenish torps as smaller bases .. usually size 8? with an AS any base over size 3 imo.
AV - add aviation support points to any base (12-16) allowing seaplanes to operate without runways.
AVD- same as above just faster and with some ASW capability
CS- again seaplane tenders for japan that allow sea planes to operate at sea . AVonly works in port. great escorts for spotting and ASW .
DE- escort . nuff said ASW ship basically
MLE- mine layers need a size 9 port to replenish. one of these can replenish from any size 3+port .. very very useful
PC- again another escort ship best used in convoys
PG - as above 'patrol gunboat'
SC- anti sub escort vessel best used escorting convoys behind the lines.

Hope that helps

PC's, PG's and SC's (and DE's when they come in later in the war)are good ships to put with AP's and AK's as an anti-sub escort. They can draw fuel from the ships they are escorting and thus make the long voyage from Japan or the US West Coast depending on which side they are. They can also be put into ASW TF's and go sub hunting but they will need to increase their experience levels before they become real effective.

AD – DESTROYER TENDER - a torpedo reloader only?
Reloads torps for DDs, CLs, and CAs. Improves port size by +1 for repair purposes (max benefit of 1 AD). I think it has to be a size 3 port or larger (instead of size 8).

AE – AMMUNITION
Resupply 5" ammo or smaller for Allies in 1944(?) onward. Otherwise, they're supply haulers (best just to keep 'em in port for 2 years).

AG – COLLIER
Actually, in WitP these are Japanese barges. Good for shuttling small quanities of troops and supplies very short distances (about 2 hexes). Useful when you don't have air superiority, because enemy AC will only attack them if set to 100'.

AGC – AMPHIBIOUS FORCE COMMAND
A transport for an Allied amphib HQ. I don't think you get any until 1943. Having this ship in the hex with your invasion (with an amphib HQ loaded), will reduce the disablements of your troops landing.

AGP – PT BOAT TENDER - Does this just reload torps and that is it?
Reloads torps only for PTs. I think it has to be a size 3 port or larger (instead of size 8).

AO – OILER - now I use this one as well with my TK's to transport fuel. is there another role?
Load fuel onto these guys, and use in replentishment TFs. You won't touch them the first few games you play. Then you'll grow to love them. Can also carry fuel in a normal transport TF, but why waste 'em on this.

AP – TROOP TRANSPORT - I think I remember reading somewhere that you can convert AK's to AP's...but i'm not sure how.
Better at carrying troops than AKs (more bang for your buck). No, you can't convert AKs to APs, or APs to AKs.

APD – HIGH SPEED TRANSPORT (CONVERTED DESTROYER)
Fast transport TF. Carry 250 load points. Also the IJN APDs are the ASW-super-nukers. If you're Japan, use these as hunter-killer TFs.

AS – SUBMARINE TENDER
Reloads torps for subs. Improves port size by +1 for repair purposes (max benefit of 1 AS). I think it has to be a size 3 port or larger (instead of size 8).

AV – SEAPLANE TENDER
+12 or +18 "free" air-support for patrols, float-planes, or float-fighters. A few of the IJN ones can launch while at sea. Otherwise, must be parked at a base or dot hex with supplies. Park 'em in the middle of nowhere with 150 supplies, and you have an instant PBY station (except everyone knows you're there from teh "x" symbol). You don't need a base-force, your AV is the base force. Or park them at a base with base force, and the AV` will take care of the seaplanes, leaving the base force to service your combat aircraft.

AVD – SEAPLANE TENDER DESTROYER
Same thing as an AV. But faster with bigger balls (depth charges).

CS – SCOUT CRUISER
Japanese only. Same thing as an AVD, but with even bigger balls. Also launches in ocean. You can't load patrols tho. But very good to plunk with KB, so that you can use the Alfs or whatever it carries, to search, and not "waste" your Vals at 20% search. Folks also use it as a small raider TF (cruise around with the planes set to NavAtk and 20% search), are the bombs are somewhat effective vs. unarmored convoys, but don't do much vs. CLs and larger.

DE – DESTROYER ESCORT
ASW guy for convoys. Or can be used in "shorter range" combat TFs (their endurance isn't that of a DD).

MLE – MINE LAYER TENDER - reload mines, is that all?
Yep. Mines normally must be size 9 port, but I think MLE makes it able to be reloaded at size 3 (not sure, I don't have any, ask an IJN player).

PC – PATROL COASTAL – OR SUBMARINE CHASER (173’)
ASW for your convoys.

PG – PATROL GUNBOAT
Mostly ASW for your convoys. Allied PGs can be converted to AGPs and PT tender (whatever that abbrev is). IJN PGs are actually fairly large. Not equal to a DD, but almost. Most Allied British/Commonwealth PGs are excellent sub bunters (they're actually frigates and corvettes, Flower class, and another I can't remember the name of).

SC – SUB CHASER (110’)
ASW for your convoys.

And there you have it!

I find AVDs very handy, they're fast and can support a PBY Squadron. Put one on some deserted island along with some supplies and a PBY squadron and you have a forward patrol base. If the enemy comes for your outpost just move the PBYs and the AVD is fast enough to escape as well.

AOs are the only ships in most circumstances which can refuel a TF while at sea. So if you want to send your carriers on a hunting spree deep in enemy held territory, be sure to have a TF of AOs following close behind so they don't get stranded without fuel there.

I only convert the ones with no ASW rating.

Mark, make sure you're clear that AD handles only DDs and AS is only for subs.

Excellent run down Feinder

A couple more thoughts:

1. I love AVDs I tend to think of them as Frigates that have Floatplane support. I even used one to attack an unescorted Japanese Troop convoy on day 3 of the war off Borneo. The AVD only got a little banged up and did cause some damage. The allies don't have nearly enough PGs to do the job of Frigates and Corsairs so I substitute AVDs.
2. AEs are great supply ships for small ports and out of the way places. I use them early in the war to supply Junea and some of the ports in Alaska. Keeps my AKs free for long haul duty. Also, I swear that these ships load and unload faster than an AK - but it could be my imagination. Prior to 44 think of them as 2000 ton AKs for supplies. Don't let them rust at port.
