I know, bad form replying to your own post but.. it's late and I have had one or two or so of my ' Watchtower's nasty old wrinkley scrotem' home brews..so

on the PC

DOS

Colonization
Xcom - terror from the deep
Dune

95 & up

Championship manager - before it all got silly
Fallout
BOB
BTR ( both these games took away my very late 30 year old childhood)
Great battles of..series
Jagged Alliance - all versions ..and 2 took over my life for at least a year .......and I still play it.arrrrgh ( buy that engine matrix)
combat mission (for a bit)

And then sodding WITP - Please someone take this horrible thing from me.

At one time I was a young and handsome a youthful, gamboling 30 odd year old buck that was due to be a shining light in this world.

Out of the blue (well not quite 'Out of the blue' cos I had dabbled with UV) That WITP thing was on me, growing like a rash. very quickly it grew spreading all over my rational thinkling.

But as long as I keep away from the advanced state known as 'PBEM' my medical advisors say I will be ok.

Colonization, Civ I and Age of Empires. Colonization was a neat game and I wish I still had it.

Now I started playing computer games due to the lack of opponents for traditional board war gaming. The war game that my group of friends and I wore out was AH's Longest Day. We played that game almost non stop for 3 years. We would set it up, play through the middle of July, then start over.

Also, as a sign of our true sickness and addiction. One summer we set up SPI's Highway to the Reich in one guys garage. We would play all night until the sun came up the next morning. All his neighbors were going to work and I was driving home to go to bed. I was in graduate school at the time. The guy with the garage was an air traffic controller who would go straight to work after the game session, clock in, clock out for break and take a nap. Ahhhhhhh, those were the days. I'm sorry but computer gaming just doesn't have the same nuances as board games.

Agreed, I remember playing Lords of the realm II so much. The only game where watching the animated mpegs 1000 times DIDN'T get boring! Waited forever for version III to come out, and when it finaly did years later, it was a totaly different game! Ughhhh Reminds me of that new Axis & Allies game that isn't even Axis & Allies but some rts crap.

Count that as two stupid mistakes I made... well life is full of them right?

I remember that.

But the C-64 game that ate up my time was Pirates, with Original Silent Service a close second.

I would say that Silent Service and Pirates ate up 10 minutes less then Gunship!

I remember 'Gunship' though it didn't grab me all that much. I'm not sure if 'Dungeon Master' was a C-64 game. It was a long time ago anyway - I LIVED in that game for months!

gunship was funny b/c u got points for damage too so the best mission outcome was to be blown out of the sky about 5' off the pad. Landing in a pile of scrapmetal was considered good flying and points were awarded accordingly I got good at it.

PTO2 will run on windows u can get it at underdog

I prolly played panzer general 2 more than anything. I didn't leave the crib for months I was obsessed w/ it.

Civ II and any of the Cossacks series. Many are the times that I saw the sun come up on these games.

Oh yeah, Cossacks was great. Nothing can beat delivering a point blank volley from 18c Musketeers on a bunch of 16c pikemen or archers.

Or a battery of cannon on a hill blasting away at AI driven troops making repeated futile assaults.

The AI wasn't that good, but definitely fun to annihilate armies.

For me, SSI's Fighter Command. Superb mix of turn-based strategizing and real-time reacting.

Doom, the original. I played and played that game. Then there was the original Sim city. Lots of wasted time

SimCity was the only reason I bought a Super Nintendo...I was deployed to Okinawa and didn't have much else to do...

Doom. Ugh. Can't stand 1st person shooters.

I think I've spent more time with WitP than anything lately, but I guess the all-time record has to go to Civ.

Steve.

Civilization could be near top. Other candidates include Wing Commander 2, TIE Fighter CD and Total Annihilation.

Tie Fighter was an awesome game! I went all the way to the end and beat it. But I cant count the number of times I started and finished an epic game of CIV II. Out of all the games on PC and console I've played over the years none have matched CIV II.

NBA 06 probably took atleast 2 weeks of my life. I played through the career mode on it and it was pretty fun. I built up a no body character and turned him into a superstar. pure greatness.

get Colonization, Civ I and II here for free!
Good luck running them on XP though!

I've not tried install my Civ I, I think that might be stored away on 5 1/4's

However have Civ II and Colonization on this XP Home and they run fine.

Need put in a 9x compatiability mode and 2048 XMS in properties so it can run
as colonization is a Dos game and looks for upper ram like one had with the old 486/386's with like 2-4 MB ram.

Another that comes to mind was an part PC part board type gaming, basically moves etc inputed in PC and action results occured, The makers name escapes me but I recall the Games were like 7th Fleet, 5th Eskrada, etc..

C64 with a small foldout table to put map and counters on ;-)

It's on 4 disks. If disks are not already corrupted, I recommend you to try game with DOS Box. It really works and you don't need suffer loysy 60 Hz refresh rate! Gotta try it with M.A.X.

Couple games I forgot to mention are MegaMek and MegaMekNET. I have played those over several years and I gotta tell you I don't know any better multiplayer game than those two... and I know plenty MP games

Parsec for the TI99/4A (okay, there wasn't hardly any competition by other games)

Loderunner (among others, for the C64)

MOO3 (and don't mock or belittle me for this ... I stand by it)
