BB Texas at San Jacinto, TX, USS Kidd (DD) is on the Mississippi at Baton Rouge, LA......me tihinks they have a restored Higgins boat at the WWII museum in New Orleans, and I think there are some mothballed ships arounf Los Angeles/Long Beach area. I am almost sure the New Jersey and the Mighty Mo are still around aomewhere also.

PS........forgot about the U-505 at the Museum of Science/Industry in Chicago.

Nikademus -> RE: Loacation of any WW2 ships today (12/15/2005 4:04:51 PM)

Dont have my Dull in front of me (Dull as in Professor Dull who's battle history of the IJN listed the fate of every major combatant) but i do recall that Japan retained use of a couple DE type vessels built during the war for the postwar self defense force. I doubt they were retained as memorials.

I think the closest you will get in regards WWII and Japan is the salvaged main gun turret from the battleship Mutsu which is on display as part of a war-dead memorial.

Nice list Ctangus. Ib've been to the Silversides in Muskegon, Michigan. In fact I spent the night on the sub which you can do. Mighty small accomodations!

I believe also there is a Japanese mini-sub at the Pacific War museum I visited years ago in Nimitz's home town in Fredicksburg, TX.

Don't forget the U-505 in Washington (for you German guys).

Its in Chicago, at the Museum of Science and Industry

I can't believe I said Washington. I grew up in Illinois, was on the U 505 at least four times as a kid and as an adult. I live in Washington now, I must have geographical dyslexia.

Here's a site that lists practically anything of note here in the U.S.:

Then here we have a site with lots of photo tours:

USCGC TANEY (WPG-37) is located in New York I think. TANEY was at Pearl Harbor on 7 Dec 1941. Sister ship USCGC INGHAM is a museum somewhere or other. USCGCs
BIBB and DUANE (also sisters) are vets of the N. Atlantic convoys (as are INGHAM and TANEY) and are popular dive sites West of Key West, FL. All of those ships served well into the 80s. USCGC DUANE carried gold hull numbers because it was the oldest ship in commission other than USS Constitution and USS Arizona (which have special commissions requiring no actual service).

There's a WWII submarine docked in Cleveland, Ohio. I lived there for over 5 years but damned if I can think of her name right now.

It's the Cod. That was the first sub I ever crawled through.

Fornadan -> RE: Loacation of any WW2 ships today (12/15/2005 8:16:23 PM)

Any British ships left?

A real shame they chose to scrap Warspite

Mike Solli -> RE: Loacation of any WW2 ships today (12/15/2005 8:20:18 PM)

Yeah. When I was old enough to start reading WWII history (about 8 or so) I almost cried when I read that the Enterprise was scrapped.

Capt Cliff -> RE: Loacation of any WW2 ships today (12/15/2005 9:20:26 PM)

Halsey fought tooth and nail to save the Big E, but to no avail! They sold her for scrap, $150K I believe in 1960's dollars. Her tripod mast is at Annapolis and her bell is somewhere (got the details at home). For a ship that fought in every major camapign but one, Coral Sea which she missed by three days, it was a dark moment for American history!

ltfightr -> RE: Loacation of any WW2 ships today (12/15/2005 9:30:25 PM)

The USS Razorback is parked in the Arkansas River in North Little Rock Ar.

Captain Ed -> RE: Loacation of any WW2 ships today (12/16/2005 3:22:18 AM)

I was on Google earth last night and found what I think is the BB-Missouri in Pearl Harbor
Is there not a large group of Assault landing craft somewhere on the Eastern Seaboard mothballed since WW2

Captain Ed -> RE: Loacation of any WW2 ships today (12/16/2005 3:23:40 AM)

Also found a naked chick on the beach nearby.[:D][:D][:D]

I've been in the Silversides too - I used to spend a lot of time in the Grand Haven/Spring Lake area. Where in MI are you?

Never stayed there overnight though. I didn't know you could do that.

I imagine that would be James River. That's where the Ghost Fleet currently resides. There are many WW2 ships in it and most cannot be scrapped, due to hazmat concerns.

Rick

There's HMS Belfast moored on the River Thames near Tower Bridge. Been there a few times........

spence -> RE: Loacation of any WW2 ships today (12/16/2005 2:22:56 PM)

I believe that at the site of the USS Massachussetts in Fall River they have a fleet sub from WWII as well. They also have 2 restored PT Boats.
There is a Japanese Kaiten on display at Mystic Seaport in Mystic, CT. At least there was one there last time I visited (early 60s (oh dear me)).

spence -> RE: Loacation of any WW2 ships today (12/16/2005 2:51:31 PM)

USCGC EAGLE, currently active as the Coast Guard Academy's training ship, is the former German ship HORST WESSEL of WWII vintage. Though training vessels in both services the HORST WESSEL reportedly shot down two Russian a/c during the war, apparently during the evacuation of Courland.

Nikademus -> RE: Loacation of any WW2 ships today (12/16/2005 4:13:47 PM)

Yes, a sub is there with the Massachussetts along with an ex-East German missile boat (sort of a modern PT only helluva more armed)

Ron Saueracker -> RE: Loacation of any WW2 ships today (12/16/2005 4:31:29 PM)

Don't forget the Canadian exibits. Haida, the only Tribal class DD is in Hamilton; Sackville, the only Flower class corvette is in Halifax; and I think Fraser, the only example of the 1950s ASW escorts Canada built is in Bedford Basin (I think).

Tom Hunter -> RE: Loacation of any WW2 ships today (12/16/2005 7:44:45 PM)

These are the ones I am sure of, because I have seen them.

USS Alabama in Mobile Bay

USS Massachusetts and a DD, a sub and some PT boats in Fall River Mass.

USS Quincy in (you geussed it) Quincy Mass on the Fore River

There is a DD (Fletcher?) in the old Navy Yard in Boston near the Constitution.

HMS Belfast is in London on the Thames

There is a Soviet river patrol boat mounted on a platform in downtown Kaliningrad, the city that used to be Koenigsburg.

There are other riverine craft near the Victoria in Kiev. The Victoria is a giant stainless steel victory figure with a truly amazing military museum in the base and loads of hardware on the approaches. Everyone should go to a Soviet war museum sometime, it will change your view of the war.

Captain Ed -> RE: Loacation of any WW2 ships today (12/17/2005 7:09:26 AM)

I think were still using those aren`t we[:D]

Ahh those people from inland capital...

Correction: ORP Blyskawica is in Gdynia harbour - 20 km away from Gdansk.
