Bombur -> Back to the war (2/25/2006 3:57:20 AM)

-B-17īs dared to attack Rabaul at daylight, but the morale of their crews is at such low levels that all the planes involved aborted their bombing runs when they saw our Zeroes. No B-17īs were shot down but at least 5 enemy airmen were captured as they panicked and bailed out, thinking that their plane was being shot down[:D]

Nikademus -> RE: Back to the war (2/25/2006 4:30:19 AM)

bah lies.

All crewman returned safely though several had their pinkys shot off from all the freaking bullets. There is a small morale problem however. A unsigned note in shaky handwriting was slipped under the tent flap of the 19th BG's CO demanding "a fighter escort to protect us from the "useless and pathetic" Japanse light bombers we were told to ignore."

The handwriting was poor either because the men are tired or because its hard to write with no pinky.

Bombur -> RE: Back to the war (2/25/2006 5:56:16 PM)

Another round of attacks on Mandalay gave mixed results. The inferior enemy fighters were badly beaten in the air, but the B-25īs destroyed more 9 fighters in the ground, resulting in about 16 losses to each side. Only one B-25 was shot down, but much more were damaged. Fortunately, losses for Japanese pilots were insignificant, while our resorts gained at least 15 new VIP guests[:D] (fighter pilots). I hope they will enjoy the sushi and sake we are giving to them.

Nikademus -> RE: Back to the war (2/25/2006 8:08:42 PM)

USAAF sources admited that the combat debut of one of their new FG's did not go as well as had been hoped. Japanese fighters were reported to have defended the base with great skill and tenacity however on a brighter note, the B-25's being escorted weathered the attacks well, only one being lost on the way back after having an engine shot out by an Army type 0. The crew were safely extracted.

Though only one plane was lost, many bombers were damaged requiring servicing. Morale also continues to take a beating from the slashing enemy fighter attacks. Flak over Mandalay continues to be reported as negligable.

Bombur -> A pause (2/25/2006 11:15:32 PM)

-No attacks on Mandalay in the last two days, as both sides are recovering from heavy losses and resting their crews. The growing threat of the enemy bombers prompted the Japanese production ministry to switch one factory from the almost useless Ki-51 to the new Ki-44 interceptor, however, there has been lots of complaints about the relatively poor maneuverablity of the new plane. Conversion of squadrons is scheduled to start in one month. The production of the Ki-43 I, however, will be continued, as the plane is considered a superior aircraft to face enemy fighters, like the P-40 and the P-39, not to mention the pathetic Hurricane[:D]

Bombur -> Allies go strategic.... (2/27/2006 12:04:02 AM)

Enemy bombers shifted their targets to resource areas in Rangoon and Canton, however, they paid a heavy price for the relative success they obtained. At the cost of 3 Oscars, the Japanese air defenses destroyed 7 P-40īs, 4 I-16īs and 3 SB-2īs. No B-25 was lost but only because their scared aircrews dropped the bombs out of target area in order to flee from the Oscars. No Japanese crew was lost, but our resorts in Malaysia are being enlarged to receive more new guests in the next months.

Bombur -> USN makes a comeback (2/27/2006 2:31:02 AM)

-The allied strategic bombing campaign goes on. Now it was time of Hanoi. Despite the lack of fighters covering the base, the Chinese lost 3 Il-4īs in two days. The US Navy bombarded Tulagi with light surface units. One destroyer was located and sunk by one of our I boats.

Nikademus -> RE: USN makes a comeback (2/27/2006 4:02:38 PM)

Probing attacks continue in the CBI theater. Flight reports indicate strong fighter defenses at both Rangoon and Mandalay, causing difficulties in the successful implementation of mission objectives. Fortunately losses have been somewhat light as the enemy has only succcessfully accounted for one B-25. However morale continues to be an issue due to the determined nature of the enemy fighter attacks leaking through the escort screen. Flak continues to be reported as negligable. 10th Air Force recommends additional fighter escorts however in lieu of other theater priorities this will probably not be achieved for some time unless other areas in the CBI are denuded in order to stregthen the bastion established at Akyab.

As of this time there continues to be no indication of enemy intentions in any theater. This is puzzling despite the admitted setback suffered by the USN recently in the 2nd battle of the Coral Sea. Defensive build ups continue in the wake of the vacuum created in Japanese offensive operations.

Bombur -> Rangoon attacked again (2/28/2006 5:00:44 PM)

-The enemy air campaign against Rangoon goes on. In the last two days, attacks inflicted significant damage to resource areas. Again, the enemy suffered relatively heavy losses. Escorting P-40īs were again, badly beaten by Ki-43īs, but only three bombers were shot down. Overall, the enemy lost 12 planes against 4 Oscars. The Malaysia resort administration warned the IJAAF that, at the current rate, there wonīt be room for new guests in one or two months, there is already a slight decline in the sushi rations for our pri..., I mean, guests.

Bombur -> AVG goes communist.... (3/4/2006 2:19:18 AM)

-The allies renewed their strategic offensive against Rangoon and also started to attack Japanese ships from the newly acquired Nanning airport. Losses were high for both sides. The enemy lost 15 P-40īs, while we had 2 Zeroes and 13 Oscars shot down. The loss of bombers increases the overall losses to 21 (allies) vs 17 (Japan). On the other hand, the allies lost more pilots while the resources at Rangoon were heavily hit.
-A small note from the Japanese HQ at Hanoi notices that despite the AVG had lost 5 planes over Haiphong, no pilots were captured. There are rumors that Vietnamese Bolsheviks (the so called NFL) are helping the enemy mercenaries to get back to their lines. This alliance wonīt last for much time[:D]

Verified claims by reliable and logical USAAF sources confirmed today that Japan lost about 50 Type 0's shot down while admitting to 2 planes lost to a2a, the rest were all "op losses"

Bombur -> Bad day for the IJAAF (3/5/2006 7:34:04 PM)

-In the worst day for the IJAAF, since the campaign began, Oscars in Rangoon were decimated by P-40Eīs. No less than 12 Oscars traded for 2 P-40īs. Even worse, 7 Oscar pilots were killed or seriously wounded. Fortunately, the Oscars were helped by the Yamada Daitai, which was sent to Rangoon two days ago. The Zero guys shot down 13 P-40īs, losing two of their planes. Ten enemy pilots were captured and another two were found dead in the wrecks of their planes.

Bombur -> Good day for IJNAF (3/7/2006 4:10:21 AM)

-Colonialist air forces were badly beaten after the Ki-43īs were retreated from Rangoon and replaced by a second Zero Daitai. Intel confirmated that the 51FG, already badly hit by previous combat, was slaughtered virtually to the last man, and will likely be retreated from the frontlines. At least 19 P-40īs from 51FG were shot down and 15 pilots captured. Only three Zeroes and one pilot were lost. Meanwhile, the AVG also appeared over Haiphong and suffered some losses. Ten P-40Bīs, 2 Zeroes and 4 Oscars were shot down. The enemy also lost 3 B-25īs (one over Lae) and one Il-4. Overall losses: 35:10. Damage to Rangoon Oil instalations was insignificant. The IJNAF pilots are pretty enthusiastic about the new A6M3, which is considered better fitted for a defensive war.

Nikademus -> RE: Good day for IJNAF (3/7/2006 8:31:36 AM)

USAAF forces admitted to heavy casualties in the 51st FG though once again the bombers were safely protected and the bombing mission on the refinaries located in the Rangoon area were signifigantly damaged. 13 P40's were lost over Rangoon while defending the bombers, cannon armed Type 0 aircraft bouncing the formations which were flying at medium altitude. 3 more P40's force landed while on the way back to Akyab while 1 more crash landed back at the airfield. 2 more P40's were written off immediately after landing. Returning pilots submitted claims for 25 enemy Type 0's downed.

Bombur -> Where are the P-40īs????? (3/9/2006 4:15:20 AM)

-Japanese intel estimates that the enemy forces lost almost every P-40 in the CBI theatre, as they started again to use I-16īs and SB-2īs against Cantoon. The Japanese Ki-43īs in the area got some kills (4 I-16īs and 2 SB-2īs), a boost to morale and some extra experience.

Bombur -> f@#$%%##$#$$$@$!!!.... (3/11/2006 2:06:11 AM)

....or something like that is what Yamamoto said when he knew the results of the second round of surface operations against Port Moresby. Not only the pathetic PT boast were able to damage two DDīs with only one PT being sunk, but the BB guns achieved virtually nothing. Only 2 P-40īs and 2-B-25īs were destroyed and the airfield was able to launch another attack against convoys heading for Lae, damaging one AK and sinking a PC. In Burma, the enemy switched targets to Mandalay. 30 Oscars faced 20 P-40īs and shot down one of them withouth losses (pilot bot captured, his plane was able to return but was considered beyond repair). A B-15 and a Hudson were shot down by the non existant flak in Mandalay

Havn't seen the need for it. PT's are much better represented now thx to the code change that allows the screening escorts to take the brunt of PT attacks (whereas before, PT's acted much like torpedo bombers....always getting shots at the highest value targets regardless of your screening force size)

However a problem i still see is not that PT's are too powerful.....its that they're too easy to accumulate en-masse. I have instituted on myself a new house rule limiting any base to no more than 1 full size PT TF (thats around a dozen boats) or multiple TF's of up to about a dozen. Reason why is that i'm currently experiencing PT "Fleet combat" in my game with Kaiser73. He's put no less than 4-5 full size PT TF's at a base he's invested...thats about 40-50 PT boats!!!!!! Kind of sureal to say the least as well as annoying because given that PT's are worth 1 VP each, they are the ultimate "throw away" weapon and make it difficult for real surface enagements to occur. The only real way to get rid of them is by straffing attacks (normal naval attack >100 feet will ignore PT's) which can be dangerous as any fighters caught at 100feet suffer severe a2a penalties.

Worst part is....even if i clear them out....he just "makes more" with the 'create PT' button

Rob Brennan UK -> RE: f@#$%%##$#$$$@$!!!.... (3/11/2006 9:27:32 PM)

He'll run out eventually .. and i didnt know about any code change on them.. happy to hear it though.

I have a rule with 2ACR .. can only create PT's in 9-10 size port

2) only use when fuelled . no one way paddling missions

3) need to escort with an AK if its over 8 ( or max) range.

Hopefully I wont be able to just wave a magic wand and have auto defence groups appear where i want them to. They will need escorting to the combat zone ( as represented being carried by the AK) if the AK' sinks .. not too sure what to do ?? need to discus further with scotty.

Bombur -> The ghost of Zuikaku (3/12/2006 6:21:41 AM)

-The reinforcement mission to Lae war ordered to keep its course towards Lae, while the a A6M Daitai, formerly based in the CV Zuikaku, was sent to Lae to protect the unloading of supplies. Results werenīt so bad. The Zeroes shot down 5 P-40īs escorting a small bomber group, however, all the planes attacked and hit one AK, whose destiny is uncertain, however, most supplies where fully unloaded and the rice ration for the Lae guys increased to normal levels (the sake, unfortunately, was destroyed by the enemy bombers). In the CBI, the enemy finally gave up attacking our bases at the light and even the better protected B-25īs switched to night bombings

Bombur -> Mixed results over Lae (3/13/2006 3:19:22 AM)

-The situation in New Guinea is evolving to a stalemate, as neither side seems to be able to keep air superiority or to run convoys to the island. The arrival of Zuikakuīs fighters shifted the air power balance to the Japanese, at least for now. The USAAF attempted to attack Lae with unescorted B-17īs. The Zeroes shot down two of them and another two were written off after crash landings at PM (non combat losses according to the USAAF...). No damage was caused by these attacks. Unfortunately, another PC from our last convoy fell prey to the Beauforts. The Army is somewhat enraged with the Navy hesitation in neutralizing PM for good, but the Navy claims that such an operation would take months to be organized given the logistics constraints in the SoPac front.

Nikademus -> RE: Mixed results over Lae (3/14/2006 5:18:14 PM)

A review by the top brass of the 5th AF is scheduled to be conveened later this week to discuss the new Japanese tactics being employed vs. our heavy bomber squadrons. Action reports from the Lae missions indicates that 'Zero' fighter planes encountered over the enemy airbase are now utilizing 'Head on' passes against our bombers to compensate for the heavy defensive firepower of our B-17's. The tactic caused heavy damage among several of the bombers and two B-17's were downed apparantly due to either shrapnel entering the cockpits, killing or disabling the pilots or from MG/cannon strikes to the vulnerable front assemblies of the plane's engines. Two such bombers were lost over the airfield, both last seen losing altitude with multiple fires streaming from one or more engines.

A running fight ensued after the target was bombed with at least 4 more B-17's absorbing multiple strikes but the Japanese did not succeed in bringing any more bombers down despite pressing home their attacks with great skill and tenacity. On landing back at base in distant Cairnes....two more bombers had to be written off due to damage sustained during the long range strike.

Recommendations include the aquisition of new P-38 long range escort fighters. Availabilty of such however is limited.....5thAF does not expect to aquire any for some time. We will have to make due with P40 and P39 short ranged fighters, positioned at forward bases. A new battle plan is under review for a coordinated attack pattern.
