Actually the best way to sink BBs early, though its still not easy is to hit PH and then hang around with the KB and all your subs between PH and WC. The allied player almost always sends those damaged BBs back to the WC after the first couple of weeks.

Agreed. So many people do this. I've even seen vets moving back from PH to WC.

It's a trade off IMO. BB, SS. They are all important ships in the long run. Come mid-43 Allied subs are a real menace (as can be seen in most days here). BB's are vital for invasion support though.

I've yet to really see a great PH style strike on the subs at manilla anyway. Does it really sink that many...sorry Speedy for mucking up your AAR.

Speedysteve -> RE: 8th June 1943 (4/26/2006 10:22:41 PM)

Hi Niceguy,

No need to apologise. Discussion is always welcome here [8D]

Yes. You can sink 10+ subs no problem at Manila. One thing to bear in mind though they are the older non-Gato variety............

Terminus -> RE: 8th June 1943 (4/26/2006 10:23:56 PM)

But those can actually be surprisingly effective, especially post-1.8.

Speedysteve -> RE: 8th June 1943 (4/26/2006 10:26:52 PM)

Roger. I still think as a trade i'd rather risk PH. More opportunity to sink more stuff there. Sure you'll lose more planes and pilots but IMO it's worth the risk.

You have to be real careful though. My opponent decided to send a 4 BB bombardment TF to visit Wake in mid-May 42. He figured it was pretty much immune to my air power because he said he had 7300 AA.[X(] I had a daitai of Nells and one of Bettys playing cards at Wake. Well, one attack later, the Idaho was littering the bottom of the Pacific and the other 3 had 2-3 holes in their sides. The next day, the I-6 put 3 more torps into the Mississippi and down she went. The other two are expected to be in the yard for quite a while. I lost 5 planes.[:D]

Later, he tried it with just the Phoenix, thinking one ship might not be spotted. Well, minus one light cruiser. Oops.[:D]

Speedysteve -> RE: 8th June 1943 (4/26/2006 11:20:22 PM)

Roger Mike[:D]

A few 100's planes on CAP soon sort Aunt Nell and Betty out[;)]

Mike Solli -> RE: 8th June 1943 (4/26/2006 11:30:07 PM)

I agree, Speedy. He sent those ships with absolutely no air cover. They were doomed before they left harbor. I was pissed that the last two BBs got away.

Rob Brennan UK -> RE: 8th June 1943 (4/27/2006 12:26:50 AM)

They might have got away mike but they'll not be back for quite a long time [;)].

manilla strike can sink and damage many subs , great help for early japanese play.

PH .. takes the BB's out for a while and sinks several ( should do).. better for mid game japanese imo

so its about short or medium gain imo.

one great advantage of hitting PH is the P40E's that die in droves + P40B's .. with a rotten replacement rate that can hurt more than losing the BB's in the short term.

one great advantage of hitting manilla is KB is right where you want it day 2 .. no transit times and can hammer any and all ships fleeing the PI or thump soerbaja before it gets tough. etc.

anyway my apologies for going OT too speedy ..

Speedysteve -> 11th June 1943 (4/27/2006 12:12:37 PM)

Hi all,

No need to Apologise Rob. As I say discussion is more than welcome [8D]

Just don't SPAM like T [:'(]

---------------

A fairly quiet day in the war against Japan. Bad weather prevented most air raids other than a few strikes on enemy positions around Myitkyina.

---------------

SS Seawolf failed to hit the Freighter Nittai Maru 120 miles NE of Jesselton. Due to it beaing a night time attack the escorts never knew she was there...........

---------------

The main fleets are now docked at PH. Fuel and supplies were loaded on board throughout the night.

The transport fleet broke up into several echelons and headed for specific piers. There loading and embarkation began of the following units:

24th Division
37th Division
40th Division
47th Eng Rgt
1st MAW Aviation Rgt
2 x AA Rgt
1 x CD Rgt

Every day brings Operation Falcon closer to jump off........

Speedysteve -> 12th June 1943 (4/28/2006 12:43:11 AM)

Hi all,

Wooooohooooooooo.............

Sub attack at 63,57

Japanese Ships
CV Kaga, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
DD Yakaze
DD Minekaze
DD Oite
DD Harukaze
DD Mutsuki

Allied Ships
SS Bowfin

The 2nd hit caused a fuel explosion too [8D]

She is relocating 60 miles NE of her position. It is guessed Kaga will head for the size 4 port of Iwo Jima. SS Pargo is a further 240 miles east and is to also try to intercept.

This is the FIRST major IJN warship to be hit by a submarine. So far they have just performed well against the Merchant arm.

Interesting to see Kaga here though. I guess he suspects a Central Pacific attack now or was she moving down south or back to Japan...........

----------------

SS Drum also had success in heavily damaging AK Asosan Maru with 2 torpedo's 180 miles east of Tarakan.

SS Trout fired 4 fish at TK Akatuki Maru which failed to detonate.

SS Grampus was intercepted by a 4 ship ASW TF. They dropped DC's which caused little damage.

----------------

CVL Monterey arrives in 3 days time. I am going to try and send her at full speed to Midway to participate in Operation Falcon. She carries HELLCATS [8D]

WELL DONE SS BOWFIN AND HER CREW. MANY LOOSE WOMEN AWAIT YOUR RETURN.

[image]local://upfiles/4211/35FAB99DE5014621860DD37BB9DEA445.jpg[/image]

Speedysteve -> 13th June 1943 (4/28/2006 11:53:30 AM)

Hi all,

Well no further sign of Kaga. Neither Bowfin or Kaga found her on 13th.........Ah well. She is probably going to be out for a long time.

SS Seawolf was the centre of attention for the day. Patrolling 120 miles NE of Jesselton she located a TK convoy in the early hours of the morning.

She let loose 4 torpedos at TK Nichirin Maru which unfortunately missed. The escorts never noticed she was there. 7 hours later she attacked another Tanker, Arima Maru. 2 of the 4 torpedos hit home almost immediately breaking the small tanker in 2. The escorting MSW's searched furiously for 2 hours but never located my escaping submarine.

SS Seawolf is to return for R & R at Darwin. A sub is en route to replace her on station.

------------------

An I-boat was located in the Indian Ocean and another 300 miles ENE of Midway. ASW forces en route.

------------------

PH dock workers indicate that all loading of supplies and embarking of men should be complete by end of play on 14th June.

Speedysteve -> 14th June 1943 (4/30/2006 11:12:05 AM)

Hi all,

RL stress and cr*p has slowed me down for the past few days. Sorry.

-----------------

The 14th was a day of success for my submarine fleet. Several successful attacks went off:

SS Tambor sank the already damaged (damaged by Drum on 12th June 1943) freighter Asosan Maru in the narrows between The Celebes and Borneo.

SS Pargo unfortunatekly missed TK Kyuei Maru 180 miles south of Iwo Jima.

SS Grunion hit the empty TK Kaizyo Maru with a fish NW of San Marcelino.

SS Salmon sank the freighter Atago Maru off the SW coast of Borneo.

SS Muskallunge hit AP Jouban Maru with a torpedo west of the Bonin Islands.

To boot my ASW forces found an I-Boat 240 miles ENE of Midway. Throughout the day several ships attacked leaving the I-Boat apparently 'heavily damaged'.

------------------

Since Yunan, Kunming and Chungking are safe from Japanese attack I have decided to mount a little incursion from China into Lashio. I'm hoping that he has massed his forces on the raill ine and at Myitkyina leaving Lashio empty. We'll see. I'm sending 2 x HQ and 4 x Chinese Corps.

------------------

All fleets reassembled today and are leaving PH for Midway tomorrow. The clock is ticking.

Tomorrow CVL Monterey and CVE Breton arrive at San Francisco.

Speedysteve -> 15th June 1943 (4/30/2006 11:42:49 AM)

Hi all,

A quieter day today.

SS Muskallunge once more had success in hitting a Japan bound Tanker, Ayazono Maru, with a torpedo.

SS Trusty encountered 3 MSW escorts 180 miles ENE of Palembang. No attacks were made.

------------------

The 2nd of my 3 British CV's received it's Corsair complement today.

CVL Monterey is leaving San Francisco today with 4 DD escorts bound for Midway at full speed. Don't want to miss the party!

CVE Breton carrying Hellcat and TBF replacements follows on at normal speed.

Speedysteve -> 16th June 1943 (4/30/2006 2:36:45 PM)

Hi all,

A fairly quiet day with no sub attacks or sightings.

-----------

Weather has been awful over Burma recently. Imphal has been socked in for nigh on a week now.

-----------

The major fleets are about 1/2 way between PH and Midway now[8D]

CVL Monterey is making progress towards Midway.

In the next month I receive CV Bunker Hill and another CVL[8D]

Each day i'm getting more excited with the prospect of Operation Falcon and to see how Faber responds.

Terminus -> RE: 16th June 1943 (4/30/2006 3:02:06 PM)

But the Bunker Hill and that other CVL aren't going to make it for Falcon, are they?

Speedysteve -> RE: 16th June 1943 (4/30/2006 3:31:40 PM)

Hi T,

Nope. They are not going to be here in time for Falcon. I predict Falcon to leave Midway within 10-14 days.

Terminus -> RE: 16th June 1943 (4/30/2006 3:59:44 PM)

Promises to be quite the epic battle, though minus the Kaga.

Speedysteve -> 17th June 1943 (4/30/2006 5:44:49 PM)

Hi all,

The sub war against the IJN Merchant Arm continued in ernest today when 2 Oil laden Tankers were heavily damaged. 1 by SS Grunion (TK Bokuei Maru) NW of San Marcelino and the 2nd by SS Thresher in the middle of the South China Seas (TK Nissho Maru).

--------------

Bad weather across Burma again only allows Dimapur to fly against Myitkyina.

--------------

Here's a sit rep of the main fleet moving towards Midway..........

Mike Solli -> RE: 17th June 1943 (5/1/2006 6:15:48 PM)

Hey Speedy, you and Faber need to step this game up a bit. I can't wait for this battle.[:D]

Speedysteve -> 18th June 1943 (5/1/2006 7:08:24 PM)

Hi all,

LOL Mike. Patience young Padawan, patience.............[:'(]

A quiet day all round. The weather clears over Imphal allowing my heavies to bomb Pagan's resources. Down to 25% production now like the rest of the area. I'm now swirtching to Mandalays airfields to disrupt supply provision...........

---------------

CVE Prince William arrives in San Francisco. This baby is a replenisment type carrying FM-2's and TBF's.

On a serious note Mike and all I could just wait until getting Hellcats before sending Falcon in but i'm relishing a fight to be honest and want to give him a chance. Hence i'm going in before Hellcats are on the scene.

Speedysteve -> 19th June 1943 (5/1/2006 7:43:42 PM)

Hi all,

One thing I should have mentioned is that yesterday I sent 7 Subs from Midway to form a picket line 1/2 way between Wake and the Mariana's. I appear to have missed Faber's picket line (see attached screenshot). I have ASW forces moving to the 2 known sub positions east of Midway.

--------------

SS S-27 has reportedly sunk a Patrol Craft (CH24) inbetween Marcus Island and Iwo Jima. Well done lads. It all counts [8D]

SS Capelin had just arrived on station 180 miles ESE of Batan Island when she spotted a small convoy heading west. She fired at but missed the freighter Tyoko Maru.

--------------

Tomorrow an AK and a DD arrive at San Francisco.

What attached screenshot?[:'(]

Mike Solli -> RE: 19th June 1943 (5/1/2006 8:02:17 PM)

Speedy must be posting from the local pub.[:D]

Speedysteve -> RE: 19th June 1943 (5/1/2006 8:04:01 PM)

Sorry guys a lot on my mind at the mo....

Speedysteve -> 20th June 1943 (5/1/2006 9:58:53 PM)

Hi all,

My sub arm let me down today with poor shooting!

SS Swordfish missed TK Gen'yo Maru 180 miles east of Palembang. In return MSW w.11 dropped some well placed DC's. She's heavily flooding but will make Darwin. SS Trident is en route to replace her from Columbo.

SS Silversides also missed a tanker in the middle of the Sulu Sea - TK Nissan Maru.

-------------

The main fleet should arrive at Midway tomorrow. Time for fueling, loading troops at Midway and waiting for CVL Monterey. Then we go to Wake......

Tomorrow an AK, MSW and DE arrive at San Francisco.

Rob Brennan UK -> RE: 20th June 1943 (5/1/2006 10:22:49 PM)

Looking forward to Wake .. good luck steven !

Speedysteve -> RE: 20th June 1943 (5/2/2006 2:24:07 AM)

Thanks Rob [8D]

I too am looking forward to it and to see how Faber responds..........

--------------

SS Herring put a torpedo into the bow of AP Kotobuki Maru. Unfortunately she was an empty ship. She was attacked inbetween Guam and Truk. DD Shiratsuyu dropped some DC's near Herring causing minor damage.

--------------

I'm thinking of Burma again now. My forces at Myitkyina have reorganised faster than expected with most at 95% of readiness! Crucially my combat engineers are all ready to go. I may attack again soon with the Japanese forces initial assault value at almost 2800:

Ground combat at Myitkyina

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 101914 troops, 964 guns, 477 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 2499

Defending force 148204 troops, 918 guns, 10 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 2808

Japanese ground losses:
165 casualties reported

--------------

Frenetic activity has been initiated at Midway. With CVL Monterey reportedly 2-3 days away empty transports, AK's and LCI's moved into position to load the remaining combat formations: 1/2nd Marine Division, Americal Divisioon, 14th NZ Bde, 112 US Cav Rgt, 2 x ARM Bns..............
