Speedysteve -> 8th May 1943 (4/13/2006 10:29:32 PM)

Hi all,

Good weather across Burma allowed raids to be launched against Mandalay, Myitkyina and IJA troops positions.

Darwin's heavies flew against the airfields of Koepang destroying 32 enemy planes on the ground[8D]

Total air losses for the day:

Allied - 17
Japanese - 40

-----------------

2 x 54,000 capacity AK convoys formed in San Francisco today to re-supply New Zealand.

-----------------

Good ol SigInt:

"2nd Army is located at Wake Island"

HQ unit there also eh?............

Speedysteve -> 9th May 1943 (4/14/2006 10:51:31 AM)

Hi all,

Excellent. A further oil carrying ship was sunk today.

SS Triton located a small TK convoy 180 miles SW of Hong Kong sailing east. She fired 4 fish at a tanker which all missed. Unable to find a suitable attack position she radioed ahead to her colleague SS Rasher.....90 miles further east.

SS Rasher found the same convoy in the afternoon. She managed to launch 6 torpedo's at the same TK Ogura Maru #5. 2 hit turning almost the enitre ship into one huge fireball. She quickly disappeared under the sea.......

-------------

My return to Koepang met mixed results. CAP had been moved to Maumere and they shot down 11 Heavies. I did destroy 19 enemy planes on the ground and in the air. My boys are resting.

Lots of bombing raids throughout Burma. I have decided to launch a ground assault tomorrow on the rail to Mandalay............

A further Indian Division arrived 2 days ago. I have 4 x Indian Division, 1 x UK Division, 1 x Indian Tank Bde and 1 x UK Tank Bde. I am ordering all bombers to attack enemy troop positions in support of the attack. We are fairly evenly matched in men but I outnumber him 3-1 in tanks. Lets see what unfolds......screenie attached of my forces.

---------------

More SigInt news:

"17th Reserve Coastal Artillery Regiment is loaded on AP,Banshu Maru #21 moving to Wake Island"

WTF?!? I wonder if someone has tipped him off............

Speedysteve -> 10th May 1943 (4/14/2006 6:58:59 PM)

Hi all,

Well the attack in Burma. Failed. The enemy forces are still too strong opposite me. Nevermind, back to bombing the hell out of supply, airfields and IJA troops. Libs are to bomb Mandalay's resources tomorrow:

Ground combat at 34,28

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 83472 troops, 752 guns, 994 vehicles

Defending force 85920 troops, 661 guns, 313 vehicles

Allied assault odds: 0 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
496 casualties reported
Guns lost 14
Vehicles lost 3

Allied ground losses:
1543 casualties reported
Guns lost 32
Vehicles lost 8

--------------

Damn look what SS Grayback could have had today:

ASW attack at 49,53

Japanese Ships
DD Arashi
DD Nowaki
DD Hamakaze
CVE Hosho

Allied Ships
SS Grayback

Ss Sawfish had more succes in hitting a freighter with a Mk XIV NW of San Marcelino.

The screenie below shows the action. The highlighted sub is Grayback. You can see the hit enemy TF NW of Luzon.

---------------

An AP arrives at San Francisco tomorrow. Also one of the longest gaps without new air unit arrivals. 23 more days before the next squadron arrives; a Dakota one too!

The final troops are being loaded up at Noumea. Then they move to Midway.

Speedysteve -> 11th May 1943 (4/14/2006 9:03:04 PM)

Hi all,

A sad day for the Submarine arm..........

SS Searaven has been reported lost with all hands 95 miles east of Batavia. She managed to get off a report about sighting enemy destroyers......it's the last we've heard of her[:(]

SS Silversides avenged her comrades though by heavily damaging the stern of TK Akatsuki Maru in the Sulu Sea. The TK although empty left the scene heavily listing. It's hoped she'll sink.

SS Tinosa missed an AP in the middle of the Phillipine Sea

SS Seawolf, patrolling near Brunei, spotted and evaded an enemy MSW.

---------------

Bad weather over Imphal prevented my Libs from bombing Mandalay's resources.

---------------

2 x AK, an AVD and SS Pargo arrive at San Francisco tomorrow.

Speedysteve -> 12th May 1943 (4/14/2006 10:14:29 PM)

Hi all,

Hmm. Don't like this. A second fleet boat was sunk today. SS Albacore 480 miles west of Saipan by the Akizuki ASW group.........

-------------

Usual bombing by me in Burma. I'm going to attack on the ground at Myitkyina tomorrow. From bombardments it looks like a couple of his divisions are very low on AV....we'll see.

-------------

Transports are leaving Noumea tomorrow.

An AK and LST arrive at San Francisco tomorrow.

Speedysteve -> 13th May 1943 (4/15/2006 12:43:20 PM)

Hi all,

Interesting. The land attack at Myitkyina managed to brerak through the first line iof enemy defences. 8 more major belts await us though. Casualties were heavy. I'll keep the enemy supressed so he hopefully can't rebuild them and in time I may attack again:

Ground combat at Myitkyina

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 114757 troops, 1123 guns, 570 vehicles

Defending force 167472 troops, 1428 guns, 30 vehicles

Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 8

Allied assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 8)

Japanese ground losses:
391 casualties reported
Guns lost 13

Allied ground losses:
4497 casualties reported
Guns lost 140
Vehicles lost 19

-------------

My Submarine arm struck back today with 2 successes.

Firstly, SS Seawolf sank the empty freighter Brazil Maru 120 miles NE of Jesselton with 2 torpedo's.

Secondly, SS Triton damaged AK Hirokawa Maru 180 miles SW of Hong Kong. She is relocating 60 miles east incase enemy ASW forces enter on the scene.

-------------

Regular bombing by me in China and Burma.

-------------

DD Bennett and SS Seahorse arrive for duty at San Francisco tomorrow.

Terminus -> RE: 8th May 1943 (4/15/2006 2:08:54 PM)

Which version are you playing this under?

Speedysteve -> 14th May 1943 (4/15/2006 7:00:33 PM)

Hi all,

T - version 1.602.

--------------

SS Seadragon attacked the same convoy that Seawolf did yesterday. This time 120 miles north of Jesselton. She hit AK Borneo Maru with a torpedo.

SS Guardfish was attacked by a 5 ship ASW TF 240 miles east of Legaspi. No damage reported.

---------------

A quarter of Mandalay's resource production was disabled by Libs today. No enemy air opposition encountered.

---------------

Tomorrow an LCI and an AK arrive at San Francisco.

Terminus -> RE: 14th May 1943 (4/15/2006 8:22:31 PM)

Figured it would be an earlier version with the heavy submarine casualties...

Speedysteve -> 15th May 1943 (4/16/2006 2:06:19 AM)

Hi all,

Agreed T. Looking forward to 1.8...........

--------------

SS Haddo committed suicide today...attacking an ASW TF on the surface!

She was struck bya torpedo from DD Kamikaze and quickly sank with the loss of all hands.

SS Hake had more joy in sinking the lone freighter Tatsuura Maru with gunshots and 3 torpedo hits 180 miles south of Iwo Jima.

Also VERY good news. SS Kingfish heavily damaged ML Tsugaru 480 miles west of Eniwetok with a torpedo.

----------------

Mandalay's resources down to 50% production.

Speedysteve -> 16th May 1943 (4/16/2006 12:16:21 PM)

Hi all,

Lightnings based at Yunan performed a successful sweep over Kweiyang today. 5 x type Tojo aircraft were reported shot down without friendly loss.

Mandalay was hit for the 3rd day in a row. More resource production was damaged.

---------------

SS Steelhead was hunted by the Akizuki ASW group but not before she fired 4 torpedos at DD Inazuma which failed to explode! She received light damage from DC's and is returning to PH.

Speedysteve -> 17th May 1943 (4/16/2006 2:00:25 PM)

Hi all,

More cat and mouse sub action around the PI.

SS Sawfish launched 4 torpedos at freighter Aobasan Maru which all missed.

SS Stingray patrolling 120 miles SE off Mindanao was hunted throughout the day by a 5 ship ASW TF. No damage reported.

SS Sturgeon encountered what was believed to be a large convoy in the middle of the Phillipine Sea. Several enemy escorts kept my sub at bay.

------------

Mandalay's resources down to 36% production.

------------

1 Amphib Corps began loading at Noumea. It is the last force needed to be moved to Midway, from Noumea, for either Operation Falcon or the Eniwetok invasion.

Tomorrow an AO and an AP arrive at San Francisco and an AK at Karachi.

Here's a screenshot of upcoming sub introduction. I love submarines [8D]

Speedysteve -> 18th May 1943 (4/16/2006 3:33:03 PM)

Hi all,

More bombing by my 100's of aircraft in Burma. Myitkyina, Mandalay and IJA troops positions all receive their share.

------------

SS Swordfish escapes some low value ASW ships 240 miles east of Palembang.

------------

My rested heavies at Darwin are to go for a different target tomorrow: the port of Kendari. Intel indicates several enemy ships in harbour.

------------

SS Capelin arrives for duty tomorrow in San Francisco.

Speedysteve -> 19th May 1943 (4/16/2006 6:38:46 PM)

Hi all,

A good day for the Allied cause!

The raid on Kendari can be considrfed a success. Enemy opposition was heavy but damage was sustained to the port and 2 x enemy Light Cruisers have been confirmed sunk. 25 heavy bombers were lost. Good news also. The first shipments of P38's have arrived at Darwin to replace the P40's there. It means raids can now be escorted to Amboina and all of Timor:

Staying in the area she later found the Kinugawa Maru damaged and alone. She surfaced and finished the ship of with guns and torpedo's. She is to triumphantly return to Darwin for R & R. SS Drum is leaving port to replace her.

---------------

90% of Mandalays oil production was halted today by Liberators from Imphal. The resources are to be attacked again now.

Speedysteve -> 20th May 1943 (4/17/2006 8:48:03 PM)

Hi all,

More air attacks and sub successes as preparation for Operation Falcon continues.

LBA attacks in Burma. Mandalay's Resource production is down to 20%. Tomorrow the Libs are going for Tuang Gyi.

I'm also ordering the troops to attack at Myitykina again. We'll see.

-----------------

3 x DD, 1 x AK and 1 x AP arrive at San Francisco tomorrow.

Speedysteve -> 21st May 1943 (4/18/2006 12:05:07 PM)

Hi all,

Well Burma is going to be a long haul........the attack at Myitkyina failed miserably this time. IJA defences were stout and well manned. The 2 leading Burma Brigades were absolutely decimated. Over 5000 casualties were sustained. All offensives are postponed for the forseeable future in Burma. Time to reduce him to the Stone Age by LBA.....

Ground combat at Myitkyina

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 108208 troops, 950 guns, 551 vehicles

Defending force 162844 troops, 1273 guns, 25 vehicles

Vehicles lost 11

----------------

The first attack on Taung Gyi went off today but was fairly ineffectual. 16% of the resource production was disabled.

----------------

The Noumea based contingents (for Operation Falcon) are passing Fuji at the moment, on the way to Midway.

Tomorrow 2 x AK and an AP arrive at San Francisco.

niceguy2005 -> RE: 19th May 1943 (4/18/2006 5:57:48 PM)

A very successful raid. With P-38s on their way, will you now mix in medium bombers?

Speedysteve -> RE: 19th May 1943 (4/18/2006 6:08:16 PM)

Hi Niceguy,

I am thinking of raiding Timor on a more regular basis now yes. I have Mitchells and Beaufighters at Darwin already. I am tempted to move up some more combat raw Squadrons from South Australia. The problem is there is little on Timor that he can't move back (air wise). Looks to be a few LCU's around though.......

Capt. Harlock -> Myitkyina Attack (4/18/2006 10:31:13 PM)

Jeez -- over 160,000 men and 1200 guns in a level 8 fort! I'd watch out for AAA when you set up your bombing missions. Time to think about alternate routes. (Maybe an amphibious assault at Rangoon?)

Speedysteve -> 22nd May 1943 (4/19/2006 12:04:43 AM)

Hi all,

Capt - I know. It's a toughie. I do have other formations held in India in reserve:

16th Indian Bde
20th Indian Division
23rd Chindit Bde
23rd Indian Division
UK Bde

I receive a further UK Bde in the next month or so.

As you say outflanking would be good. The problem for now is sea transport. I think you're right though. I will hold fire for the forseeable future in Burma and bomb the snot out of him (as I have done for months. No need to worry bout AA to much from 12,000 feet. After months of surpressing him I guess his BF's are pretty beat up).

I will see how things look when I receive Corsair IV's on my UK CV's and see what LCU/sea transport I have.

The 1 thing Japan gets oodles of from mid-War onwards is LCU's. He has moved a fair few into Burma = stalemate on the ground for now.

Thanks for your thoughts Capt. Helpfully taken on board [8D]

---------------

SS Rasher did her duty today in torpedoing a freighter (AK Yoshida Maru #1) 180 miles SE of Hong Kong.

---------------

For future operations an MLE and 2 x DM are leaving PH for Midway tomorrow.

A 5 x ASW Tf is formed at PH for a sub spotted 360 miles south of Midway. Time to go fishing [:)]

Tomorrow 2 x AK and an LCI arrive at San Francisco.

Speedysteve -> 23-24th May 1943 (4/19/2006 12:24:00 PM)

Hi all,

2 day update since the 24th was relatively quiet with bad weather grounding all air operations.

---------------

On the 23rd Libs hit Taung Gyi damaging resource production down to 55% capacity.

---------------

SS Silversides reported firing at and missing AK Nitiren Maru in the Sulu Sea on 23rd.

Luckily on the 24th she found the damaged AK Nitiryu Maru (damaged by Sawfish on 20th May 1943). She finished the freighter off with a torpedo.

---------------

Tomorrow an AK, 3 x AP and an AO arrive at San Francisco

Do you keep track of all damage you cause and who caused it? If so, why?

Speedysteve -> RE: 23-24th May 1943 (4/19/2006 8:12:48 PM)

Hi Mike,

For some strange reason I pay a lot of attention to sub ops and ASW in general. I personally believe it's one of my strong points of WiTP play.

Also I just feel it brings something different to an AAR rather than the usual stuff.

Basically yes I record any sub attack/ASW attack [8D]

Regards,

Steven

Speedysteve -> 25th May 1943 (4/20/2006 12:11:59 AM)

Hi all,

The latest patch has now been applied - 1.8[8D]

-----------

SS Hake had fun with new attack logics[;)]

Patrolling 180 miles south of Iwo Jima she sank the empty TK Matsumoto Maru with 2 torpedo's. The destroyer escorts searched frantically. Some of the DC's landed near enough by to pop a few rivets.

SS Thresher located another TK convoy in the middle of the South China Sea. 6 torpedo's fired at TK Fujisan Maru all failed to detonate[:-]

-------------

Here are the relative assault values at key locations in Burma and China:

Ground combat at Kunming

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 5494 troops, 193 guns, 0 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 4275

Defending force 229843 troops, 249 guns, 0 vehicles, Beginning Assault Value = 5894

Allied ground losses:
30 casualties reported

Guns lost 1

---------------

Tomorrow SS Raton and an AK arrive at San Francsico.

Speedysteve -> 26th May 1943 (4/20/2006 11:37:39 AM)

Hi all,

SS Sawfish encountered a couple of MSW's on ASW patrol NW of San Marcelino. 1 of them came close to detecting my baby but failed.

---------------

Taung Gyi's resource production is down to 42% capacity. Hard to knock it down to very low levels with 50ish heavies. Pretty reasonable i'd say.

Air attacks against IJA positions in Burma and China.

In the next 2-3 days there will probably be enough ready P38's in Darwin for a strike against Timor.

---------------

The main bulk of LCU's on their way from Noumea to Midway are about 1/2 way there now.

Tomorrow an LST and AR Jason arrive at San Francisco.

SigInt comes up trumps again:

I'd say they're sipping sake in lounge chairs on the beach.

Speedysteve -> 27th May 1943 (4/21/2006 12:19:30 AM)

Hi all,

San Francisco was a hive of action in the late evening!

Orders had gone out for various ships to form up and for various untis to move towards the embarking area...........

Men of XIV Corps, 1st Cav Division, 250th CD unit, 7th Infantry Division and 18th Engineer Rgt (new addition to Falcon) began loading on transports.

Meanwhile over 800,000 tonnes of supply and fuel were loaded on freighters and tankers ultimately bound for either Midway or Wake.

Another TF was formed in the distance comprising of 10's of ships that will embark men at Pearl Harbour en route to Midway and then Wake.

It's time to get things moving [8D]

---------------

During the day of the 27th SS Balao and SS Pompon were subjected to ineffectual ASW attacks from MSW's.

SS Seawolf patrolling 120 miles NE of Jesselton sank MSW Tomozono Maru #3 with a torpedo.

---------------

Faber is reinforcing Burma. 5 more units were spotted on the rail line....see below.
