Goblin -> KG Erwin battles Afrika Korp!! PBEM!! (2/4/2006 1:54:16 AM)

Colonel Higginbotham looked out into the early morning haze as the thunderous reports of the destroyer Sigourney and cruiser Portland announced that the time had come. The bombardment was to begin at precisely 0430. He did not need to look at his watch to see if it was on time. While he could not see the shore from the pitching deck of the LCVP, he could make out the glow of the bombardment striking the shoreline.

It was still very dark, and he estimated the visibility at 500 or so yards. Still, he could almost picture the looming heights of Hill 300, dominating LZ Red One, and its smaller cousin, Hill 122, overlooking Red Two. Both hills were jumble of rock, cliffs, and trees. He suspected that hill 300 would prove to be very bloody, but his Marines must take the heights to advance inland to their objectives.

His mind drifted farther south to LZ Red Three; to the pile of rocks, boulders, jungle, sand, tall grass, and mud that the intelligence guys had named 'The Junkyard'. The fighting there would be particularly brutal, maybe more so than the relatively open Hill 300. Behind The Junkyard loomed Hill 214, promising to plunge fire downward onto any attacker.

In the center, LZ Red Two, a huge rock wharf and fishing village were the main objectives. Hill 300 and Hill 122 overlooked the beach to the north, and Hill 205 to the east. The wide open expanse of sand, covered by the daunting hills made him grimace at the thought of the men who would face it.

The LCVP suddenly surged forward. Higginbotham did glance at his watch this time, squinting in the pre-dawn light. The time had passed quickly, but there was no error. 0500. The Marines were about to hit the beaches.

Colonel Afrikamoto sat up abruptly. Not sure what had awakened him, he sat in the darkness listening. There! A distant boom! boom! BOOM! echoing in from the beach. Naval guns.

So. The Marines had come at last, and before any reinforcements arrived. No matter. He would do his duty. A soldier fought with the weapons at hand, not the weapons he wished he had. His orderly came in, bowing. Colonel Afrikamoto declined the ricecakes the boy had brought, and allowed the youth to buckle on his gunbelt. He tucked his sword through it. The sword had served fifteen generations of Afrikamotos honorably. He would not stain what his ancestors had created.

For a half hour the distant blasts echoed through the jungle as he gave orders to various runners, sending them off to make sure his men were prepared. Headquarters reported that the enemy was landing in numerous spots, including his, and that no additional forces could be spared for his sector. The fire dramatically slackened, and his orderly looked at him hopefully. The poor boy had reached the wrong conclusion. The enemy had not given up. The Marines were coming.

Private journal, Col G Higginbotham:

"Earlier aerial recon of the beachhead and inland terrain raised concerns amongst my staff. What little armor I'd been promised would have rough going. Getting the job done will be up to the men whose only armor would be their training as Marines.

Strangely, the words of the Rifleman's Creed echoed in my head:

'This is my rifle -- there are many like it but this one is mine -- my rifle is my best friend -- I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me -- I must shoot him before he shoots me ...'

The commander of the division my landing team belongs to, General Rupertus, composed that creed. God willing, we will make those words ring true. "

Jeez, I hope that Goblin thought to give me some flamethrowers and demolitions -- I'm gonna need my "Blowtorch and Corkscrew" tools. [X(]

Mr. Afrikamoto, I like my Japanese well-cooked -- none of that sushi stuff for me! [sm=sterb032.gif]

Since Goblin provided such a great introduction, I propose that we break the rules and post our DARs right here. I can ask Erik to move the whole thread into its proper area later.

The stage is nearly set -- the landing craft are circling, and waiting to get into formation for approach to landing.

KG Erwin -> RE: KG Erwin battles Afrika Korp!! PBEM!! (2/5/2006 9:01:46 AM)

Private journal of Col G Higginbotham:

"Damn -- bad weather has moved in, which will postpone the beginning of the operation until February 6. The element of surprise no longer exists -- the enemy knows we're coming. From intelligence reports I've received, the commander of the Japanese garrison is Col J Afrikamoto. He is an experienced combat leader, having fought against the Russians in 1939. Hmm -- after being involved in a scandal concerning a cabinet minister's wife, he was assigned to this island's defense. His honor can only be restored by achieving a complete victory.

Well, Mr. A-moto, it seems that we BOTH have something to prove. I started my career in the fledgling Marine tank unit, and during a training exercise, I accidently put my tank in reverse and ran over my instructor, Col. Wilder. Thankfully, he survived by ducking down into a trench, but I transferred to the infantry and successfully went through the accelerated officers' course. After this, I was given command of a platoon at Guadalcanal, a company at New Britain, and now a BLT. All things considered, I've been extremely lucky.

The question now, of course, is has my lucky streak come to an end? "

Afrika Korps -> RE: KG Erwin battles Afrika Korp!! PBEM!! (2/6/2006 5:02:25 AM)

Col. Afrikamoto stared at the crashing waves along the beach. The wind wiped his face and stung his eyes with spray from the sea.

They are out there, riding out the storm.

He knew that as soon as the storm broke, another storm would come. A storm of steel, replacing the rain, followed by a tide of men and material.

He glanced one more time out to sea, then entered the jungle and disappeared...

Not sure how we can include pics...if I see pics of his force deployment, or he sees mine, it won't be much fun for either of us. [:-]

This looks like it's going to be a battle for the ages, although I'm not really a fan of the North Africa setting, I'm more of a Normandy/Bastogne kind of guy.

I know it's not a good idea to put up pictures now, but possibly after the battle?

Goblin -> RE: KG Erwin battles Afrika Korp!! PBEM!! (2/6/2006 10:12:06 PM)

This battle is a Pacific Marine Assault versus the Japanese, September, 1944.

Don't let my screen name fool you. I play more IJA now than I have North African battles. I enjoy the underdog challenge. Like Gunny, I like the close combat more than tanks dueling at range (which is still very cool)...something more primative and visceral that I like and can safely enjoy in a game. [;)]

Oh, you meant in-game battle maps-- no, not during the game itself. I'll save a few for an AAR. As for right now, we can give you scenes like this:

"The weather has cleared, and the order to 'land the landing force' has been given. The initial naval bombardment has ceased, and we are heading towards the beaches."

Afrika Korps -> RE: KG Erwin battles Afrika Korp!! PBEM!! (2/7/2006 3:50:04 AM)

<The shelling has ceased...through the smoke I can see them coming.> Thought Col. Afrikamoto.

Unsheathing his sword, carried by his father, his fathers father, his, his and his, Afrikamoto swore on the blade to earn his place by their side in the world beyond this one. If necessary, he would die for the glory of the Emperor without hesitation.

BANZAI! He screamed, as loud as he could, thrusting his sword in the air.

The cry was picked up by all his men throughout the jungle.

BANZAI! BANZAI! They repeated with equal enthusiasm.

Col. Afrikamoto sheathed his sword and nodded curtly, a deep look of satisfaction in his eyes.

Yosh.

Radio transmission received: "We're coming under fire. Tell the navy that they need to bone up on their targeting schemes."

Goblin -> RE: KG Erwin battles Afrika Korp!! PBEM!! (2/7/2006 5:37:57 AM)

Brock Ironchest reporting from the pitching deck of a Marine landing craft, somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. As the Marine landing force approaches the shore, weapons begin to speak up, answering any question on whether the Japanese will attempt to hold the island. I can see tracer fire, and the occasional sharp flash of a larger weapon hidden amongst the beach's jumbled terrain. The Marine ships and tanks return fire immediately, but I am too far out to see the effect, if any. Just off in front of me, six Marines die as some Japanese gun crew scores a hit on their amphibious tank. The 75mm howitzer armed vehicle will be sorely missed when these Marines go ashore, but not nearly as much as those six brave men. Their deaths do not appear to have discouraged the Marines any, but rather have galvanized their resolve to conquer a currently faceless, hidden enemy. More later...

I've got a nasty feeling Hill 217 is going to be a hard grind. Just a feeling.
